new lathe score

Hi guys, I just picked up this heavy duty Dean Smith and Grace lathe for a mere $1900.00. The beds like new. I estimate its from the 50's. Came with a 3 and 4 jaw chuck as well as a faceplate. I paid almost as much to have a machinery mover to rig it as I did for the machine.

man that is one giant and sounds like even with the fee to pick up and deliver you still did ok. no idea how some of us regular humans would move something like that and i hope you reinforced your garage floors.

Thanks so much, Ive been collecting machine tools for a while. I have a small shop of my own as well as my full time job.

I joined G/J when I bought an old house that had a Parker Vise in the basement which I have been posting the restoration process.

If you ever did come to this neck of the globe you would be welcome anytime.

My little shop is called Comet Machine. Ive posted a few pics of that on the Journal also.

This is actually a British Machine. You guys know how to build machine tools. We had a Lang when I was a kid. You could take a 1/2" cut.

Its actually a short bed, 4' between centres. It makes me nervous that you can buy a machine this cheap.

The industrial size stuff is theoretically a more limited market than domestic sized stuff, if it's the same across there. Half the time over here, there are some stonking bargains to be had if one has the space, with the industrial equipment. Weird as it is, the bigger the item the less it's pound per pound ratio, as a rule. 3 phase tends to put a lot of people off too, even though a lot of the time it's a nonexistent problem.

my first car was a 1963 Comet and for a little nothing looking car it was almost as quick off the line as the 1970 Mustang Mach 1 that i bought in 1977 with a 428 in it. i wish i still owned one or both of them.

anxiously awaiting more threads with some of your projects displayed.

London is just about 2 hrs north of Detroit. I have a 65 mustang with a 347 Stroker in it and a 67 fastback from Virginia. 351 CJ. The motors out of my first car. Ive had it for like 30 years ( feeling old ). I will post a few images as things shape up.

youre right, I only have 208 sf, but the shop next door is bringing in another line which I can tap into their transformer.

IIRC, the 48" is the long bed - the short one is only 36". To the best of my knowledge the 48" is the longest DSG offered in the toolroom lathes.

Exceptionally nice shape, too. Compare it to the $10k people are paying for 10EEs and it looks even better!

This guy came from the International truck plant before it closed up. Machine tools are going for pennies on the dollar right now. Im slowly collecting machinery in hopes when my son is old enough the economy will recover and there will be a little spot for him.

I'm envious - there are no such deals to be had here on the West Coast (particularly in Oregon.) We don't have the large industrial manufacturing base that you folks in the east have, and consequently relatively little in the way of cheap machine tools.

Hi, this machine has an active gearbox so you can broach with it. It has a scale you use similar to the old slide rule. You move it along until it lines up with the specific pitch you wish to cut. its all behind glass. its very cool. Also has a taper attachment. I cant recall to top spindle speed but I haven't hooked it up yet.

I have posted a few items I do know. 600V 3ph. Inch/ metric threading. Guy threw in a 4 jaw and face plate as well. I am going to strip it down and paint it with base clear. Re-chrome all the handles. Probably a read out eventually.
