protecting tool box investment

Hey everyone! I am new to the forum and just recently purchased a krl722. I am an industrial maintenance mechanic so I am pushing my box around the plant most of the time. Where I work people don't pay attention or simply don't care so boxes are always getting scratched or dented. I was searching on here to see how people protect their investments from getting damaged and didn't find much info. I didn't want the environment to keep me from having a nice tool box. So here is what I did with mine to protect it. I made a frame and put softer casters on it. Then I put plexi glass on three sides bolting it to aluminum I put on top and into frame so did not alter box with holes.

2 on the way haha...thanks guys!!! I know a lot of auto mechanics that don't have this problem because they do not move their boxes around most have carts. There is only 1 other guy that I work with that has a snap on box but is a big triple bank so he doesn't move it. Making numerous trips back and forth to the shop when I'm a quarter mile away on a down line is out of the question. I need to have all my tools at my finger tips. I hope this helps some guys who are on the fence about buying and expensive tool box because of the environment they work in!!!

Yea a couple of guys gave me some **** and I wish I would have thought of that one Bob!!! Actually one of the guys said the same thing about the couch haha. I expected a lot of comments when I came up with the idea especially since I was doing it at work. Rather deal with that than a big scratch across the back lol. Dodgemech, I completely agree haha. Couple of us guys actually have some prototypes in the making! I will definitely post when we get one going.

That's a great idea. I might add that polycarbonate (lexan) is quite a bit tougher than acrylic (plexi.) Ita a great idea though and you should be really happy with the 722, its a great box.

Completely agree but that's what we had at work and didn't cost me anything so I took full advantage

thats not a bad idea, considering most of the guys i work with don't care about a lot of their tools anyway, don't let anyone give you **** about keeping your stuff neat and clean. because you'll never be the guy opening each drawer one by one and shuffling junk around looking for "that one you had a little while ago that isn't here now". i work plant maintenance too, but they buy boxes for our use and we outfit them with what we need, so no need to worry about messing boxes up.

where do you work if i may ask? all but one of us just throw a full tool bag and stuff we normally need on a tool cart and pull the cart around and leave the boxes in the shop... unless it's a huge job where you are going to need so many things that we just wheel the boxes out, its simpler to just leave the box stationary and pull a tool cart that you load up

I work at a company called Pactiv we make plastic cups, plates ect. I usually walk around with a pouch and when that doesn't cut it just grab the box. A lot of guys work out of tool bags and some just throw tools they think they will need on a cart. Have tried both options but seems like I always forget something and have to make a trip back to the shop a few times. I also personally like having the right tool for the job. I find it much easier and faster to say use a ratchet instead of a crescent wrench. Just how I have always been. How about you Kracin what type of plant you call home?

Great job! That's really nice. I went with the "ARMOR" version of a Viper box, but it really only protects its corners. I didn't want to invest all that time into customization, but yours is much nicer!

I was also looking at the skins because they say they give some protection but didn't want to spend the money. Also didn't see them giving much protection
