Leanna: My little guy has a brass ring holding the main screw in. I'm VERY sure its threaded on but Its snugged up a little tighter and I can't the the back side. The front side of the ring sure looks threaded, and I think they did tow things or "lock' it in: deformed the thread closest to the brass to keep it on, and smacked the ring itself with a punch to also lock it.

My vises keep getting bigger, this is now the biggest one I have. Parker 955 I found today. I think I officially have too many vises now.

You luck dog. I guess people in my area don't use vises or never sell them because it's hard finding them and when you do it's even harder to find them with good deals.

Athol 324 1/2 X with the pipe jaws somewhere in my truck. Excellent overall condition with minor markings to the castings and the jaws are quite sharp

Very nice! These seem to be few and far between compared to other Athol offerings, took me a long time but I finally acquired one of the same vises not long ago. They sure are heavy for their size!

For a total amount of 63,- euros ~ 86 Dollar, for the auction and home delivery.
The weight of such a vise is 39.1 kg (86 pounds).

Now looking for new 6" jaws (Paramo or Irwin Record).
The original jaws are no longer there, and are replaced with ordinary steel copies.

Those are designed to take a beating and keep going, and are all forged construction.

looks like a decent Blacksmith vise and try to grab that bench that looks like it's well built too if you have room. under $150 for both or $100 just for the vise would be very doable.

Outlaw: the baby bullet was part of a package deal where more than a few Benjamins found a new home. it is also stamped twice on the slide and i'll get those pictures when i can. one is 1948 and the other is 1946.

That is a nice heavy duty almost-EU model. Are you planning on painting it or leaving it original?

BC: it looks like yours has the holding screws for a pair of pipe jaws which are not there. i'm wondering why so many of these old vises have missing pipe jaws? were the galvanized or metal pipes too hard for them so they broke?

also BC is the set screw at the base on the side opposite the swivel pin a set screw for the vise nut because I've never seen one there? nice vise and wasn't it nice to have a decent tool sale to yourself and be first in line?

Ill go take a look at that later to see what it is but it was nice to have the garage all to myself for a change. In case you didnt see it in the first post, i DO have the inserts, they were just elsewere in the garage and still in a shopping bag at picture time.

I would agree with drivesitfar. It looks like it has around 4 1/2" faces, but the handle is bent, it's missing the rear cap and the bottom of the leg looks abnormal. I would still say $100 bucks would be a great buy. I have 3, and would pick up another in a heartbeat for a good price, even though I may be selling one or two vises in the next week or two.

Well, I'm over by Kalamazoo, Detroit is hardly the farthest I've driven for a vise. Let me know, I'll keep them along with the other 20 or so that I have.

Well, two things...

One, I'm mostly selling the stuff I always intended to sell, not the pride-and-joys I own. That will free up room, money, and bitching from the wife to pursue other possible scores.

And two, after buying a house, a new car, a trailer, getting a rental truck and trailer to move a bunch of our **** from another state to here, paying a shop to fix our other car, trying to buy an additional 20 acre neighboring lot, and buying/paying for a bunch of other **** all in the past 6 weeks, I'm ******* broke!

Trying to do too much at once, I need to pace myself lol.

This was sitting in the basement, loose, of a good customer's house. I asked about he; he said 'take it' and they'd never used it, the previous owner left it when they moved in in '69. Handle & anvil area have some dings, but the jaws are mint. Superior 44, Erie Tool Works, 4-in jaws.

Some open screw vises are worth owning, but in my opinion this is not one of them. Here is a more realistic version although this one does not have hte pipe jaws.

Not too desirable. Good little vises for typical "home use", but they're light duty and don't have much collectors value. $65 is high to me, I wouldn't pick it up for any more than around $30.

WQ: awesome restores of two smaller vises and amazing that they both still had their hardys. is that a hammered rustolueum and what color because looks great on both of them.

Cal: wait for another one. that is a fairly small and common open screw vise and i think it has a hardy hole and that is missing.

Autopts: that is one of the nicest Reed 2C's I've seen and almost looks new. nice find and restoration.

how about the damage on this nice little 60 pound Rock Island vise. it still works, but i picked it up for a parts vise in case i find another one that needs some.

Parker 974 Restore Update

Hopefully complete. With the generous help from the GJ experts, this old vise turned out pretty much like I wanted.

Parts ready to assemble and a couple on the bench.
