Nice vises those Parkinson Samsonia's. Is it 5" or 6" jaws on that model?

Yeah, the Parkinson vices - and other tools for that matter - were always well made and finished, even their cheaper "Handy" line seemed to be much better finished than their Record or Paramo counterparts.
This one has 6" jaws.

Just realised I'd used the Merkin spelling for vice, (I've spent too much time reading this thread). :D They do have that little extra quality to them, don't they. Parkinson is my favourite vice manufacturer. Even Woden's don't match their quality either. That's a fair size beast at 6". :) Bet that must weigh a fair bit. :D

 Maybe because they consistently used the old spelling.

Well, I picked up my first vice. Bear with me, as I've always had the luxury of having family vices. Who doesn't? Anyways, it's a small USA made Columbian C43 1/2 anvil vice. I paid $5. What do you think? The lever could use a little straightening. Heat? And the swivel is hard to turn.

"$5 What do you think?"

You have to ask? You know the answer! Nice USA made home-owners vise. Other experts will chime in on straightening the handle. Good job!

Mine was that color when I got it but paint was about at 40%. Would have been nice to save it but I just couldn't see it.

I've got quite a few of that style of vise and I've yet to salvage enough paint for a match. The guys at the paint shop try and get a match in the machine but have yet to be successful. Someday I'll get an original and get a color for everybody:thumbup:

Straightening the handle is a piece of cake, as long as you have a press that is. Tedsters gave me the idea a couple months back, just take out the screw and put the bent part of the handle in the press. Do it a few times until it's straight. If it's a very minor bend you may have to put two pieces of wood / metal under the handle on either side of the bend, just make sure you don't go too far. The less times you try to press it back straight the better.

So I have a good friend (and neighbor) that had a long haul trucking operation in the family for over 40 years. His father ran it before he did - he took it over when his father passed. Great guy, can't say enough nice things about him, has taught me quite a bit.

When he sold the business, he had to clear all the gear out of the shop. He put it all in a 48' trailer - that sat for the last couple of years. When he knew I was building my garage, he asked me a favor: would I "store some tools" for him. Needless to say, I was not only happy to take the tools, but flattered he would pass down some of the stuff he is handing off to me. While going through the trailer (parked in my front yard, to my other neighbors' dismay), I found two solid vises. They both need a little love cosmetically, but they are mechanically sound. They were used daily up until storage.

First up, a Paramo #4, swivel base:

photo%201_5.JPG

Second, a Wilton 6", also swivel base:

photo%202_5.JPG

I also got a ridiculous amount of other cool tools - including some vintage Snap On torque wrenches, a plethora of quality air tools, etc. I'll see if I can find another thread to post some of it in.

After a bit of dry spell on my vise hunting, I struck pay dirt! This was listed on CL as a "vice grip" for $15. I saw it last night and immediately recognized the screw knob as a Reed. The owner insisted that the vise had no manufacturer info on it and he told me he had been corrected and it was actually a vice and NOT a vice grip...and wanted to know if I was still interested!

I couldn't go get it until after work today so I was sure it would be gone but amazingly, he held it for me. He gladly accepted the $15 (I didn't try to haggle) and he said he was surprised there was so much interest because he had several calls! So, if I snagged it out from under one of you guys, I'm sorry, but not TOO sorry.

Reed 204 1/2. Lots of nasty paint and tape residue. It's headed for the electro bath tonight!

Happy hunting!
Jeff

Finally finished cleaning up the 204 1/2. Hammer tone black. Jaws are in excellent shape. Couldn't see them when I picked it up due to all the grime and paint. Someone really dinged up the slide but no cracks or welds. I'm happy with my investment.

Also somewhat misinformed (Not 1900...) and their scale is probably off by near 10 lbs...

I agree the pricing is outrageously crazy, on the other hand I hope they get it ;) Not that that could get me to sell mine.

They won't get it, but someone will pay too much for it...

Those are day-um nice clampers...

I wish you well with your restoration...

I have added "your" $ 5.00 to the "Ever Elusive 5198 Fund"...not that I'll ever need it, but there is a fund...

And, no, there isn't enough in the fund to buy the Ebay Parker...

I picked this Wilton 400 up on Friday. I am assuming that the "02 00" stamping would mean it was manufactured in February, 2000. What year did they start making this style 400? It looks just like the ones they sell new now.

I love this thread. I've made it through 105 pages so far and it has taken a while. Only 720 more to go.

Hey all,

I realize this isn't exactly the right place, but I'm trying to find a Wilton 450S / C2 or another high quality 4.5" vise to restore and build a stand for my Dad's birthday, he doesn't have a vise but would really like one and he loves the work I do. So I'm trying to do something special for his birthday coming up. If anyone has one that they would part with, please shoot me a PM.

Thanks!

Andrew, just a heads up, the C2 is a very large 5" jaw vise, a C1 is 4.5" and probably still a little bigger than a 450S.

Yeah I know, it was a typo, a C1 / C2 / C3 would all work just great, however I figure that a 4.5" is a good size, not too big but definitely not too small.

Here is a Wilton Cadet 9150 5 inch jaws that was my dads. He's been gone for 12 years now and I finally ask mom if I could have it. I brought it home and sent 4 hours fixing it up. It has one jaw pad missing. (Any one know where I might find one?). The jaw pad had been on his work bench for years and wouldn't ya know it, it's now no were to be found. It also Looked like it came from the factory red. So that's the color I painted it. I should have taken some before pictures but was in to big of a hurry to get it lookin purty. It was nasty when I brought it home. It has a warranty exp. of 6/30/62

Some members might not of caught it but I was planning on heading north this weekend, and even mentioned grabbing Carla's big Parker that she put up for sale.

I missed that one but did find this little Prentiss swivel jaw at an antique store for 20.00. It's hardly marked, (Prentiss NY) near the swivel groove and that's it.

Jaker:Nice looking vise and with some good history too. does the one jaw fit on the side that is missing one? if it does maybe PM KMScott and see if you mail the one jaw to him if he can make one just like it. I know he has the talent and just a matter of time because he might be busy perfecting the Parker's jaws he is attempting to master.

good luck

BC:Damn don't you ever feel guilty taking advantage of those little old gals at the antique stores. nice save and another awesome vise for the museum. Keeper?

Very nice cadet! My dad has been gone 35 years now. He had an open screw vise that was red. That is all I remember about it. I'm guessing an old columbian or something cheaper, I'm sure. He was a high school teacher, so cheap was important. :D It's long gone, but I still wish I had it. Very nice that you have yours. The jaw is an easy fix and there are people on this forum who can whip one up for you.

Antique store? Man you would hate to see the local antique stores selection of vises. That would have been "Super rare, $2K" :spit:

Is it just the pic angle or is the back of the slide cracked?

It's cracked. It took pics with my new iPad and I could only get one to load at a time. There is a small split which will be fixed before I unstick the swivel jaw.

Just wonted to show off my Yost 33c vise. It was given to me in disrepair, the spindle collar set screw had come lose and the vise was locked, after some time I got it apart, I cleaned up the acme threads, turned down/out the pipe wrench marks on the spindle boss, made a new collar and spindle boss rod, the paint is some military green but I like it......I know im not suppose to paint the ram part of the moving section but this will be under the shed on a big pipe so I wonted some anti rust protection, 0$ invested, about 2 1/2 hours labor.....

[.

Wilton, to my knowledge has 5 generations of machinist's vises. The latest and current model was changed slightly in 1998 but basically the same as the models that began in 74-75

Thanks for the great info! I have a couple that were made in the late 1970's and was curious when they changed to this particular style.

Looks somewhat light duty for a mill vise, suspect it was sold as a drill press vise. Might be OK on a mill if you're careful.

A very nice Morgan 80, has popped up on Ebay...

My tired old eyes noticed that the jaws are missing, but the rest of it looks nearly new!!!

Fixed base, but I'll bet a swivel base could be found, if necessary...

Nice 8"ers don't come up to often...

Ahh, the big ones are never in driving distance for me! But this one is! :D

oldldh: I lost a bid on a Craftsman 5196 last night, I stopped at $150 because the Shipping was $80 to my house. Had I not bid on it, the guy would have gotten it for $50.95

A 5196 is a nice 4 inch vise...

There was one on Ebay, last year, that went for $ 265.00 plus freight!!!

It was almost "new looking"...

I also quit at $ 150.00---and it kept going up between three bidders, until it made over three hundred, including freight...

They are very nice vises, but that's a lot of cash, for one...

5196's pop up frequently...5197's about 1/10th as often, and 5198's have never popped up!!!

The search continues...

Did you save any photos of the "Lost 5196"???
