I thought this thread could get interesting, and since it's the first one I have started, please forgive me if I screw it up....anyhow, I buy a lot of tools at auction and end up with some made in China tools mixed in, so I thought I would show some of the screwy tools I end up with.
First up is a set of taps...how do you think they cut?

Those look like extractors, not taps.

If there were any kind of relief angle ground into them, I suppose you could be right, but these are ground cylindrical, two flute, three flute and spiral all without teeth or cutting/relief angle...I assume they were taps that missed a step before they left the factory, maybe I am wrong:dunno:

Tools from China are only as good or as bad as the lazy product managers who contracted the factory without doing proper due diligence. :dunno:

They could be just blank samples. Are there COO marking on them?

OK, then, from now on this post is "Defective tools from around the world" just to keep everyone happy.

Yes, OK, you guys are right, they are reamers! :headscrat , reamers that never had a cutting angle or relief angle on them? A two flute reamer?? :lol_hitti

No, just the "made in China' sticker on the plastic case.

Man this went down hill fast, I just thought it was funny to have a set of toothless taps made in China...I didn't realize you guys were so defensive over the Chinese stuff.

I didn't consider anyone defensive. They were just pointing out that this is an obvious troll.

There were plenty of low quality, never inspected tools made in the U.S. at one time. The tools that stuck around were the high quality ones. The junk was thrown away long ago.

That's what is so frustrating about buying Made In USA today. Sometimes it is worse than Chinese, due to attempts to cut costs. It's no guarantee. I've seen plenty of German tools that were ****, too, they just don't get exported much.

Well, I have heard the Troll term, but never knew what it meant so I had to look it up; "In Internet slang, a troll (/ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people."

Hey, all I was trying to do was participate here, I read a lot of good stuff and thought this would be a entertaining thread...if I have attempted to initiate an argument or upset anyone as a 'Troll'...Honestly, I don't know whether to say sorry or F'off and grow up.

CoPilot, thanks for playing...that's a good one and what I thought we would get from this thread.

That's my guess, too. My brother-in-law gave my some old stuff. One of the taps had not teeth! He explained it was a blank and could be machined to special thread pitches, if needed.

For what it's worth, my blank was made in the US.

There's an interesting and entertaining five-part video series on Youtube where Keith Fenner (famed Youtubing machinist) spends a downright stupid amount of time correcting the various defects of a Chinese bench grinder.

You can actually learn a lot watching him tackle and solve problems one by one. I think at the end he actually ends up with a nice functional bench grinder.

Part One:

Perhaps "interesting and entertaining" is an overstatement... perhaps not, knowing this crowd.

Notice how the 44" tool box isn't pictured!

Also notice the Matco dealer in the last picture picking up his inventory! :lol_hitti

Well, if anyone were to ask me about investing in alleged 'tooling' from that part of the world, I'd give them the same advice traditionally given to young folks about taking dope.

'Just say NO'

As has been mentioned..........

Mr Fenner, an excellently capable machinist, did videos of his experience, when, with great determination, he rebuilt/redesigned a pretty-looking, new, but dysfunctional, Chinese copy of a Baldor carbide grinder.......I'd not have that level of patience with that class of item. I don't know, actually, but I would strongly suspect that he'd decline a commission to do up another one.

(and, for the record, I'm mot being 'racist'.......my suspicion is that they build items to a price level demanded by an American importer/re-seller.........sort of like your local fast-food stand offering a special low price meal, cos it comes with a rat-burger)

cheers

Why would a tap set come with four different type of tap? I think you probably got a sample of blank tap. The Chinese company sell them to US company so they can put whatever thread pitch they want (and put "Made in the USA with global components").

You can buy drill/reamer blank and make your own drill.

I just bought a pair of (99 cents only) dollar store needlenose (for the outside) from india. The jaws line up and everything, a little tight and some surface rust, though. I doubt I can break them though I will try though just so I can post them in your defective tool thread.

Yes, I understand all this, I have thousands of taps and drills and huot cases of drill blanks...I have a machine shop full of this stuff...I get it.
Have you seen them sold (and why would you buy them at) a discount store, packaged as sets? These were not from one set, they were separate sets in plastic tap set cases note sure how else I can explain it, so we will just consider them abstract art...because obviously everyone thinks they are something different here.

I'm not sure what outside needle nose pliers are or why you would want to break them on purpose, but if it makes you feel better, go ahead, maybe start a new thread about the things you buy just to break them?

This thread reminds me of how Led Zeppelin got their name..... "Going to go over like a lead balloon."

Hoarder....don't take offense to some of these guys.........there are quite a few on this forum that have nothing better to do but sit behind a computer and criticize what others say/post.

I understand what you were trying to do.....I opened the thread because I thought there would be a bunch of pretty funny posts...........but instead.........

I'm not offended, just surprised at the path it has taken, I am glad at least a few other people shared the same view that I thought this thread would end up as...so thanks for that.

I had a box full of stuff I had saved and was going to post and now I can't find the stupid thing...so I'll just let this thread die here a miserable death unless I run across it in this mess of aisles and piles I have here.

I don't understand. If these "taps" are actually blanks, what's the defect in the tool?

Is the defect the package, in that blanks were mistakenly placed in a package labeled taps? I don't remember seeing the package.

No, just the opposite actually, I live in a large building that is filling up with quality tools and equipment faster than I have time to clean and sort them out. I am working in this pile today:

As long as we don't talk about defective cars from GM we will be fine, not quite sure but I doubt a tap has ever killed anyone.

And as you read this on your monitor made in china, your ipad made in china and type your replay saying that I am a troll and don't understand on your keyboard made in china...or perhaps India.

Point is there is **** made everywhere....you know if we did not buy the garbage they would not make it. There are plenty of goods of all kinds made in every country, just like there are plenty of examples of garbage. America does not equal quality, Just ask the folks at Quality Egg....funny name, they only made 62,000 people sick and have to pay out almost 7 million because of the lack of "quality" of their product.

Once again, this was just supposed to be a thread with pictures of China made tools that are screwed up from the start, something I thought would be fun....it turned out to be a 'guess what these aren't" thread....Yeah I know a lot of things are made in China....everyone knows that.

I try not to buy China made products, especially tools and certainly not any FOOD. Yeah, Quality Egg screwed up bad, but even after that and the few other contamination problems from other US food suppliers in the past few years, I would still trust US suppliers over China processed food.

Now that this has turned from tools to food...I suppose some of the fine folks here will come and defend food made in China?

In February they passed federal legislation to allow US raised chicken to be shipped to China, processed and shipped back here to sell and labeled a product of USA...You all may be fine about that, but I am glad we have our own chickens and live in a area where there are plenty of locally raised and processed food...

I would post pictures of our chickens, but then you would all argue they are actually ducks, geese, quail or two legged bearded pygmy goats?

Having said that, I love my Milwaukee M12 and M18 cordless tools made in ...., but what choice do you have for a decent cordless set with any kind of variety made elsewhere?

Back on topic. The multimeters that HF gives away have junk leads. The meters themselves might be ok with a decent set of test leads, but mine wouldn't even work for a continuity test.

Any of the vise grip style tools are junk. They bend when you try to clamp down on something harder than pine.

Horder - I could see these being taps without the threads ground. Square end for hand tapping with four flutes. I run into these taps all the time in production applications.
