Also I love your garage thread and was wondering if you could offer any tips for painting my cabinets? I have a simple cheap gun I was planing on using and these will be perhaps the 2nd time I have ever used one of those. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for comments about my thread. Honestly I too have a spray gun but havnt really used it but once and had mixed results cause of prep and I sprayed a latex based paint from Rustoleum. A lot of my projects are small so spray cans I mostly used. I do have a lot of stuff I'm going to paint in the near future and thinking of getting some quarts and mixing up my own cause its cheaper. If any tip I can give is prep really well and allow proper cure times if use spray cans.

...SNIP...

Thanks for the tip on prep. I must be honest that is going to be a stretch for me. I tend to be impatient (its both a personality trait, and a limitation due to available time) so my prep and finishing skills are usually lacking. I think for the cabinets I have to spray them from quarts just because of the area I need to cover. However, I am really struggling with color choice. I had been thinking about using Hammered Silver on the body of the Cabinets and Regal red on the doors and drawer fronts.

Hammer Silver

Art-Paints.com

Sunrise Red

However now I am worried it will look terrible with the Napa orange so I might just go with a Smoke Grey Cabinets.

Smoke Grey

Save the Hammered Silver for my truly special tools and items like my Craftsman Box.

I really like the way you put them above the garage door. It makes use of otherwise wasted space.

Rubberrodder: Thanks, I can't take too much credit for the placement it was really the only place they would fit. I really lucked out too because they just barely fit (1" of clearance) above the garage door hardware.

I just found your thread today. Looks good.
We live just south of Oregon City out in the country.
We have been here 1 year. The place has a 30' x 34' pole barn.
My wife & I are on Social Security so money is tight right now, with nothing for remodeling.

4AudiQ:  30'x34' sorry I got lost for a while there. I wish I had that space. While I am not on social security I do have 3 young kids so I understand funds being tight. Just keep a close eye on Craigslist the deals are out there. Just don't go stealing the ones I want :lol_hitti

Cheers, and thanks for following.

What other colors do you have in garage? Tools boxes and such? I'm repainting my craftsmans boxes just the red to match the red of the HF 44's. You can see the difference.uploadfromtaptalk1401923872206.jpg
Its not a perfect match but trying a new paint out.
uploadfromtaptalk1401923872206.jpg
I did find a paint that matched closer but didn't have it is this brand. Its a primer and top in one can so it should save a step. We shall see. Im repainting a lot of stuff trying to match all the reds and silver hammertones to tie everything together.

What other colors do you have in garage?

These are the main colors I have in the Garage that I would like to replicate elsewhere in the garage.

Vintage Craftsman Front (Open)

Napa Cabinets Hung

Lockers (2)

Those are the best ones that I could see using elsewhere. I am thinking of using the dark grey from the Lyon Lockers on all the lower cabinets. Save the Hammered Silver for equipment and mobile items, and use the Napa Orange just on those Napa Cabinets since I hate orange in all ways except on those cabinets.

Was that cabinet originally red? I know they made them silver but thought silver throughout? I think keep those Napa cabinets original. It would be a shame to paint. I do things alittle different. A lot of my projects I don't paint right away. I build them mock them and use them for alittle, make changes if need cause you might wanna change something after a few uses. My welding table is prime example. I just looked at colors again that contrast of silver and charcoal would be nice through garage and the white walls will make items pop. Maybe bases dark with silver for drawers or silver on machines.

Gerard: No, the red inside the Craftsman box is definitely a repaint, however, it is a pretty good match to the red used in the Craftsman logo on the box. Yeah the Napa cabinets are not getting touched, at least not the door graphics. They are a little rough and even though I hate orange I like those just how they are. I may someday take off the doors and paint the bodies but that is down the road. I think we are pretty much on the same page. I am thinking that the main cabinets, will be the Charcoal Grey and machines and vises will be the Silver Hammered. Thanks for the helping "talking" it out.

Cheers,
Jeremy

Tool addition

I did get almost a whole other locker hung but my time was a little split up as I had parenting to do. Futile holes to dig in my back yard, for phantom leaks that originated in my neighbors back yard.:willy_nil:willy_nil:mad: But I did have time to do a tiny bit a craigslisting and this little guy followed me home.

Just needs a little love and she'll be all set.

Nice garage - saw the Lyon cabinents.

Where those made in IL by chance?

My dad worked for them back in the day, the used to have a few plants in the US. I'm pretty sure they have closed them all down and shipped those overseas.

Thanks Gerard. I'm pretty happy with it I think a little while in a e-tank to remove rust and then maybe just some oil. I may paint it instead still working that part out.

Crusher; thanks for the kind comment. It isn't as big a shop as I'd like (but honestly what guy has ever said his garage was big enough). But it is slowly becoming a very nice work space and the process of getting it there has been fun.
About the Lyon cabinets. I honestly don't know where they were made. They are older ones and incredibly heavy. I do assume they are US made because oh the build quality but that's all I know. Oh that and I finished the set of three that will fit with out rehanging the garage door hardware.

Jeremy:very nice use of the wasted space in your garage's ceiling. also a great place to put some harmful chemicals up out of the way and maybe even locked up to keep your boys from getting into them. i know how heavy those Lyon cabinets are and very impressed you were able to install them by yourself standing on a ladder.

http://www.lyonworkspace.com/

as far as i can tell Lyon is still making awesome cabinets in 4 spots in the Midwest and they make one of the best cabinets i know of. i have a 4 foot wide, 2 foot deep and 6.5 foot tall one that weighs over 500 pounds and each shelf can hold a ton if i need it to.

keep up the great work and looking forward to seeing more of your progress.

Happy Fathers day to you and all the dads and grand dads out there.

Drivesitfar: Thanks for checking in with the information. I did double check the locker that isn't up on the wall yet and it is a US made LYON. I got a little work done as well on another little work station and I will detail that next.

House Wall Work Station.

When I first started the garage I had several open shelving units in particular one on the house wall that was a mess and kind of a catch all for junk.

You may have remember this picture from the first page with my oldest son.

Well this weekend as part of my fathers day gift my lovely long suffering wife put in an extra day on her day job (Stay at home mom) and gave me several uninterrupted hours in the shop. So I placed 2 of the 3 remaining base cabinets I have as well as a great wall cabinet I got in trade for some labor from another GJ member.

I would also like to thank Gerard (taumac) for his kind reminder that French Cleats existed which is how I mounted this wall cabinet. Also I will go back and remount the Napa Cabinets this way as they need to be moved and French Cleats will work way better.

You will notice that the table top material changes here. The butcher block top was acquired in the deal that brought the Lyon lockers home but it wasn't long enough to cover the whole bench. So a few cast iron wings that jumped out of the scrap bin at work and into the back of my truck where shimmed up and mounted to the side to fill the gap. I think this will give me a nice multipurpose bench for general work and even some light grinding and welding. Things I still need to do to button this up:

1. Sand and finish the Maple top.
2. Add a Front edge to the cast iron to match the depth of the maple top
3. install a back splash.
a. Metal behind the cast iron
b. white board behind the wood.
4. Paint the base cabinets and large upright cabinet.
5. Clean, de-rust, paint(?), and install the Craftsman Swivel Vise.

Thanks for following along and all the advice.

Also I hope you all had a Fathers Day weekend.

Your bench looks fabulous in its new home, well done.
The cast iron plates are a great idea as well, good score.

Thanks 1/2 Cup. I have been working hard on this for a little while now it is fun to see it come together like I have hoped. I still have a lot to do but it is coming along nicely.

Gerard: Thanks for the nice comment.

Looking great. You've scored some really nice stuff to repurpose in your garage.

Metalhead: Thanks for your comment, I am very blessed and lucky for both the job I have and the things I have found for my shop. I have gotten some great deals many of which have been free or nearly so. When I first joined this site and started looking around I was very envious and jealous of the guys with big 1000+ sqft shops. But since I have been getting mine more organized and thought out, it remains small but has gotten so much more usable. I hope to have it "done" within the year. :shocking: So I can spend more time on other projects and my 1963 Fairlane 500.

Cheers and thanks to all. Jeremy

I haven't done a lot of work on the Garage lately as I have been working on projects in the garage. I did get my NAPA cabinets re hung level and on French Cleats so they are closer to the wall and more where I want them. I hope to have some better updates again soon.

You can see the tail end of the French Cleats hanging out from each cabinet. I am planning to make a custom shallow depth cabinet between the two NAPA cabs to properly use that space as well.

Thanks fire. I haven't been working on the Hodgepodge garage a lot recently since I have been attempting my first vise restore on this little guy.

I hope it won't take me more than a few weeks, but with a list of summer projects piling up on the house as well as the usual trips now that the kids are out of school, the little garage projects might have to wait a while to get going again.

Last of the Lyon Lockers.

I have been pulled away from the shop some recently due to typical summer projects (with many more to come). I also have a vise I am restoring that is taking a lot of my time right now. However, I had one more Lyon locker that still needed to go up. Because of the way they go together (sharing an end panel between lockers) my set of four was short one end panel for the way I wanted to install this last one. So I improvised with a spare piece of peg board that used to be above my old Craftsman bench. He is a through back shot from about 6 months ago showing the peg board where it used to go.

I cut it down to fit the cabinet side and screwed it on.

Then I hung it on the wall and test fit a few hooks for the things you need right as you walk in the door.

I still need to paint the peg board to match the rest of the cabinet, and re install the doors but otherwise it is ready to use.

Awesome idea and repurposing of something (small piece of pegboard) that might have normally ended up in the trash bin.

and your bride and kids won't trip over your shoes now that i think i saw sitting on the steps under your door in a prior picture. :bounce:

I didn't have much time free yesterday but I had the 5 minutes it took to put the doors on the Last of the Lyon Lockers.

I'll paint the peg board to match when I finish up the rest of the painting on my new work benches. Which hopefully I will have time to do in the next few weeks. But we shall see. If it doesn't happen then it may have to wait until September the way my summer weekend schedule is filling up.

I got a tiny bit of time to do some organizing this weekend, one of the few I won't be traveling this summer. So I decided to put a few more tools away.

Edsal (Just Like Jack Olsen) Cabinet with tools

This cabinet came into my garage thanks to the generosity of fellow member drivesitfar. I really like the layout and storage of it and it allows me to be a little more like my garage hero, Jack Olsen. Now I just need to get an Old Porche  and a flush mounted lift :drool::thumbup:

We have taken a few trips lately to see things like this.

So I had been neglecting the Hodgepodge garage but I did get in there this past week a little and got a few things done.

I got a little more wall and floor space cleared by moving the bikes to t he ceiling.
Its hard to tell from this photo but I cleared the garage door by about 1" on the near bike (mine) and about 5" with my wife's.

I also finally got my final cut done on my work bench top, for the "L" Shaped bench.

I just need to shim and mount them down, followed by the finishing. I think I am going to use Varathane to coat them and hopefully preserve the look while making them tougher.

Work Bench Continued (the End is nigh)

So like everyone else my shop projects take a back seat to trips and vacations. However, I got a weekend free before the big end of the summer vacation, and I spent it in the Hodgepodge Garage.

So I dove headlong into the "L" bench project again in hopes of making real headway.

I started out by bolting both tops and the long back splash down. This required a little creative clamping since my timbers weren't perfectly straight.

Unfortunately this also applies to the edges of my cuts.

Once the three main pieces of the top where secured down.
\

I set up to create the corner piece to fill the gap highlighted here by my friendly assistant.

This is the first cut

I then checked the corner angle (nothing is ever square :eyecrazy:)

Unfortunately because of the thickness of the tops (this will be a good thing in use, not in creation) each cut is actually 2 cuts to get through the piece. So the four cuts didn't fit the way I wanted so I had to hand fit everything.

Of course once it was in place the top had just a little bit of a lip on one side so I had to flatten that out.

Here it is fitted and planed in place.

Unfortunately I had a few gaps and cracks to fill as well.

So using the sawdust and chips created I made color matched filler.

To Be Continued......

"L" Bench Continued

While I waited on my putty to dry some I also worked on a few of the sharp edges of the bench. I was worried about hit points for my kids so I spend a little time rounding the sharp corners of the bench.

Again the thickness of the top dictated the tools I had to use. I didn't have a jigsaw blade long enough to make it trough the top so rather than spend money and time finding one I misused a tool I already had on hand.

The cuts were a little rough so I went back and sanded them smooth and rounded then a little better.

The bottom edge of the top is also about head height for my youngest (3) and I was worried about standing up into the sharp machined corners when I bent over as well so I rounded them with a quarter round bit.

I used the same bit set a little shallower to ease the top edge as well to make finishing easier as well as reduce the risk of splintering. I forgot to take a finial progress pick at this stage so I will have to add that tonight when I get home.

I did get some serious help from my assistants as well.

Also before I get scolded for the little guy helping without a mask. You should know that the sander scared him so he stayed long enough for the picture and then decided to go pick and eat blackberries instead.;)

I also just wanna say: great job. I like GJ because of guys like you who share all those great pictures from inside and around their working space at home. Mine is a mess atm, but your thread inspires me to put away my iPad and start to clean up. Keep up the good work.
