5MM Mitutoyo gauge on top with handle to adjust the opening of the jaws. Jaws have a lip which looks like it is set up to pinch onto something.

Odds are that is a custom built devise made for QC'ing something during a manufacturing process. I was think for measuring a detail height on a pipe, but the machining on the bottom of the jaws doesn't lend credence to that guess.

Any clues from where it came from?

It came out of a super garage sale score....the Taco Wagon of a former German car tech.

Loads of Hazet/Heyco MBZ/Porsche tools in there as well.

I'm guessing it was multipurposed as a fitting measuring device? or for reaching down into an area to get a reading.

I think it's used to measure valve lift on a MB to set timing.

Outlaw, gorrilla...those sound like pretty good theories. I'll have a look through some of the MBZ tools listings to see if I can find a match.
