A junk-shop guy put an ad on CL for a 'machinist's level for $25. A $25 level is interesting enough, and I actually need it to set a lathe, so I was there the next morning at opening time. I wasn't prepared to see this ancient, beautiful beast. It's a 15" ultra-precision level (o.ooo5" per foot), and they're still made today as the Starrett 199Z. They're about $700. All I had was twenties and he couldn't make change so he took $20 for it.

Good to see that everyone is doing well!

Here is some junk I collected last month.

IMG_6518.jpg

Some nice SK including a side button ratchet which is a new one to me.
Ratchet at top of pic is a Kraeuter.
IMG_6521.jpg

IMG_6524.jpg

Samson Leverjaw wrench with cool turned adjuster, weird Elgin tool, and an early body piercer.
IMG_6525.jpg

Neat SO socket case
IMG_6528.jpg

IMG_6529.jpg

Ice pick, screwdriver, and Vaughn hammer/prying tool
IMG_6530.jpg

IMG_6531.jpg

Unknown Belden combo tool
IMG_6536.jpg

couple of old locks
IMG_6539.jpg

No shortage of phillips socket drivers
IMG_6541.jpg

Some old license plates (which I do not collect so if someone wants them….)
IMG_6542.jpg

My favorite score is actually this box of assorted rubber parts for 25 cents! Also a speed controller I hope to use with my CNC router
IMG_6540.jpg

Happy hunting everyone!

Rusty, that "body piercing tool" in photo #4 looks like a repair tool for Spencer logging tapes. A modern version is here : http://www.forestry-suppliers.com/product_pages/Parts.asp?mi=65231

The Belden pliers with the box end wrenches are for battery service. It combines battery pliers with the common sizes for hex nuts on battery terminals. I think it only had one box end originally and someone added the second by welding another wrench to the second handle. Are the box ends the same size?

Nice scores! I like how some of them are pieces of Portland history. :rocker:

So here's the $20 vintage Century Electric buffer I alluded to a few posts ago. Includes wet bearings front and rear with a refill it yourself oil reservoir for each:

"space ship cool" lmfao Sack, you crack me up. Good find!

drcliff, $20 machinist level, YOU ****!! If you are done leveling your lathe and need your $20 back, I'm your man ;) It is a small world, great meeting people from the internet though usually it goes the other way around, meeting on the internet first, then in person... :D

Rusty, Nice find on the Frankenstein ratchet! and the body piercer" is probably for leather/heavy canvas work, and either snaps or eyelets. Maybe shoe string eyelets? :dunno:

"Liberty Coal and ice" :lol; polar opposites! Neat find; Love it!

"Beldon mystery tool": Is the second wrench end welded on? Very cool!

Make sure your router is AC/DC before plugging it inot the speed control!

Outlaw,

The "liberty Coal and Ice" is certainly one of favorite finds. It reads LC&I on two sides, "courteous service" on the 3rd and "Honest Weight" on the fourth.

I think the Beldon mystery tool has been brazed on the damaged handle but it seems to be a repair rather than an alteration. I think the two box ends are original. There is a description (no pics) of one on Ebay calling it a pair of "battery pliers" with 9/16" and 5/8" box ends. If these are common battery terminal sizes I would say that might be a good description.

Thanks for the tip about the speed controller. I was going to try to use it to slow down my Porter Cable 892 router when using drill bits in the my CNC router. The 892 already has variable speed -just no where slow enough for drilling. Do you think it will work?

Spent a grand total of $17 at the local flea market and saved more history. Here's the haul:

pic 1: all for $8
Plvmb DOE wrench, #1131 5/8 and 3/4
Wards Eclipse auto-kit style wrench
Stanley crate hasp
Wright 2-1/4" socket, 3/4" drive, a little rash but not too bad

pic 2: all for $3
small 2-inch clamp on vise, made in Japan, but it will be perfect for tying flies for fishing
small pressure gauge, made by Ashcroft, marked "All-American pressure cooker"

pic 3: $1
red glass warning light lens, small but kinda neat

pic 4-5: all for $5
Kenmore brand motor setup as a bench grinder. Not sure if this started life as a bench grinder or just a two-sided motor. Type SKO, 1/3 HP, 1750 rpm, seems to work okay, a bit slower than I'd like but for $5 I'm not going to nitpick. The shaft is marked "Craftsman". Would like to know more history about this piece.

Rusty, one of my Icepicks is also really old, and has the bottle cap hook like yours. I know it's old as the phone number is a 4 digit no, with ALameda in front. "Island City Ice Co."

It went missing for about a jear as SWMBO stick in itn a drawer "because it's Sharp!

Um, I had an inch of 12 Ga copper wire insulation stuck on the point for that very reason... Back in the pen cup it went...

I'm not too optimistic on putting one variable speed on top of another. if both were Rheostat type, maybe, I suspect neither of these are...

Your Router is rated from 10K to 24 K RPM's no load. Even assuming the dual speed controls work, ask it to get anywhere near 1K and I think at a minimum, you will have HP issues. Even as small as the drills probably are.

Can you rig a small corded 1/4" variable speed drill into the CNC?

My first stop today turned out to be one of my YS competitors trying to thin out his stash to make room for more. If I was interested in antique Snap-On, it would have been a gold mine. I know there are members here that will give me grief about leaving the SO behind, but it just isn't my thing. I pick up a piece of the newer stuff every now and then, but the old stuff doesn't appeal to me (oddly enough :dunno:) .

I grabbed a box full of pickings and paid him the $20 asking price. Maybe I won't get as many elbows in the ribs the next time we meet.

The second stop was supposed to have a block grinder, but it was gone by the time I got there. I had to pass up a $30 4" Parker vise. It looked like it was in a train wreck. I couldn't even find any usable parts off it, everything on it was broken or severely damaged. It was really sad. I grabbed 2 things off the bench and left in defeat.

The next two stops had nothing, despite the CL description (this is why I like to see pictures).

The last stop was an estate sale from 2 or 3 weeks ago. They needed to clean the house out and everything that was left was free. Translation - they cleared out anything decent and left the trash for the scavengers. Still, I managed to find two things I could use in the rat droppings.

Pic 1 - $20
20 asst'd hammer handles in a fruit box from Spain.
12" unmarked square rattail file

Oooo, bigger than I thought. From the picture I thought that it might be a 1/2 ton, but now I'm thinking that it must be bigger :dunno: ???

Yeah, nothing for scale in that pic.

Well, thanks for the reply! I thought it was odd that it didn't state it on it somewhere, but I'm happy regardless.

Wow, MORE great finds!

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Keep after it guys!

I DID go back out after that Wilton, and I was wrong, it was a 3"... No matter; this morning it was "I can't go less than $40"... Its on a shop made tripod stand, and has lived out in the weather who knows how long... Rusty but not to beat up.

I ask this afternoon "How much for just the vise?"

and hes happy with $20! "Deal"! :rocker:
I also got a set of wood grips I hope will fit one of my handguns for $5. He had no clue...

He also asked me what I did, and mentioned he had a couple of anvils buried under some stuff. (I went into his back yard. Wow.... piles and piles of stuff... He could not get to them, but said at least one "real anvil" and maybe a couple of RR track anvils. He took my name and number, and said he would call early next week. Maybe he even will... :dunno:

It's missing the end cap, but everything else is there if rusty. It tips the scale at just past 19 lbs. and it is a Chicago, and I popped the slide out (well greased) and its dated 4 - 47, so with that being the expiration of the 5 year warranty back then, its a '42. 72 yeas old! It doesn't look a day over 50!

This one will get an E-bath before painting, and I think this one gets Hammered Black just to be different. I may hang on to this one, at least for a while, unless someone waves an irresistible amount of cash under my nose.

Jake, for the arbor press, compare its physical dimensions to other presses and you should get close, if not dime on... It's basically the gear ratio and frame strength...

I went to a moving sale first, was a used car dealer at one time. So I got some snappy tools to replace some of mine in the toolbox. I finally got some snapon swivel!

Also i picked up a few things that I' not positive about like the black slide deal with adapters, I thought it was a slide hammer but the hammer just slides off of the shaft.

Either way here is the snappy tools,

img_1887.jpg

Need a lever for that ratchet, anyone know where i can get one?
img_1888.jpg

Mystery tool on bottom,
img_1889.jpg

Then some craftsman tool and a huge armstrong socket, for me anyway, and a few other loose tools.
img_1890.jpg

img_1891.jpg

img_1892.jpg

I liked this badge! LOL

img_1895.jpg

I gave $70 for it all, a little rich compare to my normal prices but I felt like i got some good tools!

You guys rocked it!! We had our first garage sale at the new place today, went pretty good considering there were 144 sales in our immediate area....It would have been a great day for shopping but I could only hit two on a change run. I picked up a shop floor squeegy and an electric Torro weedeater for $12, had to break a $20 for change purposes, you know

I too picked up a 1952 4" Wilton bullet a local flea today for $40. It got used in the last 62 years but not abused and thus no cracks, repairs or missing pieces. She'll be a keeper and be put to work. Been a good start of the season for me and vises, $125 total for the Wilton and a complete 90lb Emmert paternmakers vise that I scored 6 weeks ago.

Happy hunting!

That is a great find. Put her to work. Congratulations. I need to find a Wilton combination and a drill press vise. I have had a great estate sale year. With the greatest generation dying off, good stuff is coming out of the woodwork.

I only went to one sale this weekend, and it was a bust.

Whittled the list down to 6 stops today. Scored at 4 of them. First two were busts. Third was a "Huge Man's Rummage". The $1 bin yielded the following:

SK Wayne Slip Joint pliers, Utica pliers, Vlchek punch and offset DBE, 2 Select Steel DOEs, 5 SK Wayne combos, and the Stanley 12' tape that didn't make the group photo.
Then I picked up this 10" Craftsman adjustable for $5:

The last thing from this stop was a $20 ziploc bag full of SK (including 75% or so of SK Wayne):

The mystery tool is a clutch alignment kit. Missing 1 adapter.
Thread an adapter on the shaft, slip the shaft into the pilot bushing on the crankshaft
and slide the tapered piece forward into the clutch plate center to align the clutch plate before tightening the pressure plate bolts.

Next stop:

The OTC brake spoon was $1, the MAC (Diamond?) pliers, Irwin screwdrivers, and Bridgeport screwdriver were $0.50 each.

Next stop:

$6 for the very small =Craftsman= BP hammer, the thread chasers (box says "Snap-On Tools"?), brake pliers by Old Forge, and a KD brake tool.

Finally, I wasn't sure about this stuff, but I figured I could speculate for $10:

Ridgid pipe cutter, Erie Auto pipe wrench, Fairmount/Lawson angled pipe wrench.
