Not to jack the thread, but you folks in here might be able to help.
I have just purchased a lathe.
At 50 this old dog would like to learn some new tricks.
Sadly, our local community college has no resources in this area.
I have a couple of friends who are machinists who are willing to help, but I'd like to do some reading if possible to help the learning curve.
I've been to some of the home machine shop forums and lurked a bit, but would really like some suggestions on some good books I could buy.

Unfortunately, I cannot with my dinosaur internet connection. The price of living in the sticks. Videos are not possible in any real sense.

There was also a real good ATLAS How To Run a Lathe Manual that accompanied their machines as well.

If you are real interested go to a local Barnes and Noble and pick up the latest issues of the Home Shop Machinist, or Projects In Metal Bi-monthy produced by Village Press. It will be worth it just to be able to order some of the publications from them. Steer clear of the Home Shop Machinist website though, quite a number of real ring muscles over there to deal with.

As I recall MSC, Travers, ENCO, or another company like them sells some good machinist reading material, it might have even been Grizzly. Anyway, there is a start for you.

Reading is good but there's nothing like OJT. Take your friends up on some hands on training if they are willing. A pretty informative DVD for starters that I enjoyed was Machine Shop Secrets by Marshal Burr http://machineshopsecrets.com/
Not to pick a fight but I happen to think the Home Shop Machinist is an excellent site. It's a wealth of great information, a slew of friendly guys with years of experience, give or take a few. Practical Machinist is another good site but seems to be geared more toward professional machinists. I'd suggest joining both and utilizing the search function?

Good for you bud, my experience was not good, in fact it was the worst experience I have ever had on the web. I used to visit HSM web sit a lot, and subscribed to the publications, that experience ruined it for me. I stick to Practical Machinist and leave the bunch at HSM alone to bicker with each other. I was not interested.

I downloaded and saved all those videos when they were high resolution Windows Media files. They changed them to small flash videos to save bandwidth.
