I've been meaning to ask Kevin the same thing since it appeared a few weeks ago.
I have a couple old grinders that need some attention, A Dunlap and one that has a brass name plate (manufacturer I have never heard of) and looks old as dirt.

Happy Fathers Day to everyone !!!!

Kevin? Thats your house up in the corner?

Yes, that is my home, see the small windows at ground level, that is where my shop is. Kind of tuff setting machines in a 50 foot diameter basement. The basement is worthless for a garage but works well for a machine and woodworking shop. I told my employees when we was building injection molds that they would be building tools and looking out the windows Elk would be grazing. I could not think of a Avatar that describes me except for a shot of my home outside of Estes Park CO.

autopts...thanks for the ideas about the "A" & the comment on the Wilton; coming from you it is considered a compliment in the highest regard. Your work is top shelf!

The vise was semi naked when it arrived so the restoration went fairly quickly. At one point in its life it was painted a chartreuse or teal but there wasn't much left. Paint prep, as usual, took the greatest portion of the time. It helped since all the parts were there & in good shape as well.

That's a really cool house Kevin. My cousin and her husband live in a geodesic farm house built in the 1950's, it's in Missouri. They like it and talk about its pros and cons.

Reverend Scott--

Your "Basement" is nearly 2,000 sq ft...

I wish I had half that much floor space...

That's a 32X60 building!!!

Gazooks!!!

I've always liked geodesic domes, lots of space, however the lack of corners must make arranging things difficult...

I live down on the Gulf Coast, and in the Summer, I wish I lived in the Rockies, however, in the Winter, I love it down here...No Elk in my yard, just the occasional possum...

Nice place!!!

Kevin, cool house/shop! I built a combination shop/house but it is a conventional steel frame metal building with a wooden 2-story "apartment" built inside one end. For some reason my wife loves it, and decided not to build the "real" house she intended on the site of our old, falling-down farm house. We were only going to live in the shop until we could replace the house, but then the economy tanked.

I was around a geodesic structure when I was in college. It was built cheaply from plywood and had no insulation. It had been built by art students as a workshop. It was all one room and with the high ceiling was hard to heat. Having grown up in an old farmhouse and being used to leaning things in corners, it drove me nuts!

Balane, the house sat for 2 years before I seen it, it is huge and needed much work, the ceiling is 35 feet of open space. I love it. We are at 7600 ft and the winters are long. I heard Missouri has several dome houses. My comp for refinancing is in Texas, not many Geodesic homes around. Thanks.

Thanks Oldie, shop is only 1/2 of the diametor, around 900 sq ft, the other 1/2 has the furnace and water stuff. I used to have a full machine shop in the basement, Bridgeport torq cut 22, Elox EDM, two Bridgeports, two surface grinders, a Clausing lathe, A welding bench and a TIG welder to do Mold repair. and three employees building injection Molds. The good ole days, sold the shop in 1999 and purchased a smaller CNC and surface grinder to play with and filled the rest up with wood working machines. Now it full of vises.

Provincial, Thanks, sound like you have a unique home also, this Geodesic home was built in the early 70's, it is not insulated very well and is expensive to heat. I have lived here for 25 years and like the wood heat the best but 10 cords a year was to much work. We are now heating by pellets. Still using the pellet stove this morning. we still have a few corners but very few walls.

My neighbor growing up had a pair of geodesic domes. One was the house and a separate one was the garage. They heated the house with a big wood stove in the middle, it had two floors (bedrooms upstairs). They've since been torn down.

Even us swiveling b@$tards love a good stationary where room permits. Where I can swing a 20 foot joint of pipe around for threading, give me a stationary every time. But if you saw my shop you would know why I love a swivel. Stationary just won't work.

I even have a locust stump, but its not famous.

Allinon, what jaw width on the Simplex?

I picked this Starrett up today for three bucks at an estate sale! Still bolted to the bench, but that was easy to fix!

Starrett 323-1.2 3-1/2" jaws (no big surprise), missing the pipe jaws, but swivel base and 45 lbs! Not bad!

So yes, another Swiveling B@$tard here!

That was on top of this no name Homeowner's vise yesterday:

Casting markings are V16 on the base, and V17 on the D jaw. :dunno:

Who are you???? I know you're in this thread.... I want it!

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Whoever he is, he's a real dic... Nevermind. I sent him a message a bit ago and merely asked if I took care of arranging shipping if he'd drop it off at the closest store which was only a few miles away, his response was Note: Read the ad again

So I told him what I thought of his attitude and that it's no wonder it didn't sell when he had it at $429 let alone $500. Anyways, you're better off finding an alternate source, as he's less than helpful and wants someone to come move it off his bench for him and is willing to wait until that person comes along to do so.

And I could careless if he's a member here, obviously he's not motivated to sell squat otherwise it'd be sitting on my bench but to be honest, even at $50 I refuse to deal with eBay sellers that have a ****** attitude.

/end of rant

Alex that turned out real nice... I got to get a buffer and learned to polish metal so I can do my vise handles nice and shiny like that.

Sorry to hear that, I think we have all had to deal with ppl when trying to buy stuff that make it way too hard.

On a side note not to derail one of my favorite threads...(the only one that moves so quick it's hard to keep up) but anyone near the Vegas area that is selling a monster vice that's over 100 pounds feel free to PM me. Thanks!

Well, to be honest...Fairhope is one of the nicest and quaint little towns in the LA area...I can see why you might want to be stationary there. Here in Gulf Shores, it pays to swivel a little every now and then.

I should be swiveling before long. I bought this base off E Bay for the old Parker 289 1/2 I got a week or so ago. It will fit perfect except for having to enlarge the holes in the base of the vise for the pin and hold down bolt. Another project :headscrat

Finished up my Reed "restoration"…

First photo is before…second is during the refinish. The static jaw had been through the electrolysis bath, the dynamic had not…included just to show the difference. Third and fourth are "After" glamour shots. I've already chipped the paint!

Used Rustoleum safety red, with self etching primer under. Seems to chip pretty easy…oh well, it is a vise, after all.

In the final picture, is my question - is there any way to have the locking handle line up with the vise body? Kind of annoying that it sticks out when locked down…I doubt there is, but i figured I'd ask anyway.

Thanks to the forum (especially Outlaw) for the responses I got during the process.

Here's a couple I just got in.-----Grand Quickset--8 lbs.,-------Stanley Handyman--2 lbs.

Quickset is bigger than I anticipated. Never seen one up close until now. Their on E-bay about every week but they ask too much for them. Finally found a buy it now reasonably priced so I pulled the trigger.

Always wanted one of those little Stanley conventional type bench vises, but don't come around that often. Missed one about 6 months ago cause I was watching The Mentalist and forgot the auction. Auction went off 2 minutes before The Mentalist. I'd been watching it for 7 days.

you might try unscrewing it completely and re-indexing the bolt by rotating 90 degrees if its a square head underneath. it was suggested by another member when i posed the same question. if not, a washer should do the trick.

I finally got around to re-finishing the Gothic C0 I picked up back in February. I still need to straighten up the handles a bit.

That is beautiful.

What color/kind of paint is that? I have a C0 that needs that color!

Found my first estate sale vises this weekend. Haven't gotten a chance to measure any of them yet.

Hey guys I was looking through a Parker brochure last night and I did not know that there was a Parker 975 1/2, does anyone have one of these that I can see? I haven't seen any posted on here before or on eBay which leads me to believe that they're pretty rare, I would imagine that people who wanted a vise larger than a 975 would just skip to the 976. Looks like this one might be just as elusive as the 978 to find, maybe even more so.

Oh well, it's all in the hunt! :)
