My rental home a/c unit crashed. The compressor went out. They are 2001 units and I live in Phoenix area. I was quoted $1650 to replace the compressor and $3500 for a new unit(2 ton goodman rooftop including new stand and thermostat). Does this look like a good price, really dont have time to get things quoted since I have people that are living there and it is 105 degrees.

$3500? Really? Go for the new RTU at that price. I couldn't even come close to that price inc crane, stand & stat. That's what I charged in 1998!

It might be helpful to break it down the cost:

condensor unit: ?
Installation material: ?
Labor: ?
Install equipment: ?
Schedule: ?? completed next day, next month, next year???

That's what we'll need to know since you're not seeking competitive bidding for several quotes.

I've never seen a unit mounted on a roof like that, is that duct the cold air side going into the house? Where is the return air duct, looking at the neighbors units seems like only one duct on the unit.

both the supply and return are under that flashing...its just a cover for the duct work

I noticed while visiting my cousin in Phoenix that many of the units are mounted on the rooftop. Why on the rooftop? TIA

A lot of the west uses packaged rooftop units instead of split systems. Central valley of California is full of them too.

There's some advantages going that route. Only 1 piece of equipment, no refrigerant lines to run, etc.

Same in NM - you see a lot of that roof mount stuff. Some of that I thin is because a lot of older homes started out with a swamp cooler mounted up there, so the duct work is already run for AC. I could not buy a whole unit here for $3500 at the supply house, let alone get it installed.

Man I can't even imagine working on that unit in the summer heat on a roof in Phoenix.

You wouldn't take that job at noon or later. Working out in the hot areas isn't bad when you start a 6 am as a lot of trades do. On tracts they will be out there as soon as there is light. They'll actually be setting up in the dark.

As opposed to an uninsulated attic anywhere in the SE? At least there might be a breeze up on the roof. It's not hard to see 130+ in attics when it's in the upper 90's.
