Carwash question:

What is the best way to remove road dirt like this without massively scratching the paint?

I would use a hose then a foam canon.

When I have stuff like this on my cars/trucks I go spend a few bucks at the pressure wash first... Before I use my foam cannon.

Trust me, im not saying you are doing anything wrong b/c you are not. Lost of times I use my foam cannon b/c I don't feel like driving it out to the pressure wash. Just throwing out the suggestion.

Although the pic of the truck doesn't look bad. Im talkin more like after a good day of mudding!

Hello everyone!

I haven't posted in a while, was busy detailing and trying to find a job as an electrician. I also had a small surgery which kept me in bed for a week and a half.

I had a little 19 gallon craftsman compressor that died on me when we first moved into the new house. I had it fixed but didn't last long and was using a small 3 gallon that I had as a back up. I need to upgrade and buy something that will last and wouldn't give me any issues in the near future. I had my mind set on a 60 gallon but didn't want to spend $1500 on a new unit. I tried looking on the local classified but did not find anything that caught my attention, everything looked overpriced or just too old.
Two weeks ago I decided to start looking again, I had a good week and had some extra money to spoil myself! After a quick research I found a nice unit that seemed to be exactly what I was looking for!

My dad and I went to check it out. After a short 45 mins drive we arrived at our destination, we took a look at the compressor and seemed to be in excellent condition so I bought it. On the way back we stopped by Home Depot and purchased all the hardware to install it. The next day we drilled the porcelain but one of the anchors broke

Y6ODZDf.jpg

I wanted to drill it out because I really didn't want to drill more holes on the porcelain, we have really good metal drill bits so i figured i wouldn't have any problems with that.

The next morning I got up and went straight to the garage to get this sucker out! Everything goes going smooth until the tip of the bit broke and couldn't get it out so I had to drill another hole and modify the compressor foot

We drilled right next to the old anchor ( which we cut with a grinder)

the modification

And finally

Once the compressor was finally solid I had to deal with another issue, my hose reel. Since the new compressor was much bigger than my old 19 gallon I had to move it up a couple of inches. Had to patch the holes, primer and paint.
I also purchased an air filter, couple of fittings and a 5" air hose

One of my clients stopped by and took a couple of pics too! He's much better than me

That looks like it should be able to supply you with enough "juice". Great shots, it really looks like a pro's garage now.

Great article as well. If only my parents didn't need their garage when i was younger. Would have had way more fun hahaha.

Looks like you have already realized your next goal ;)

Echoing Dubber's comments, congratulations on your compressor purchase. I know exactly how challenging it can be to find something that suits all your needs. It looks like that Eagle should get the job done. What are your main reasons for using a compressor. I'm curious.

Those are some great photos your friend took. I would love someone with those type of skills to photograph my garage.

Thanks everyone!

Unfortunately, I have some bad news. The feature on the newspaper didn't bring any business, instead, it got me in trouble. The city sent me a letter and they want to shoot me down. I will go see if there is anything I can do about this whole thing. A lot of people think that detailing involves panting cars which I clearly don't do.

I'll keep you guys updated

That's some bad luck, Nico. So, besides their unfounded concerns about painting, what are the issues? If it's just a matter of them thinking you are releasing harmful chemicals into the air, which you aren't, what are they threatening and what is their justification? I hope you can settle the matter quickly and painlessly. We all know how hard you worked preparing your space and it would be a crying shame if you weren't able to continue your top-notch detailing. Keep us updated, please. Good luck.

My suggestion is have a city inspector come out and show him what you do, all the chemicals and compounds and tools used, and the simple fact that you clearly are not set up for painting. Every body/paint shop I was ever in smelled of bondo, lacquer thinner, and was full of filler dust. Once an inspector sees how sanitary your work space is, I don't think you will have to much trouble.

Yikes. Hopefully you can get it resolved quickly.

I have a couple questions for you as we also have a shop that was designed for washing and detailing (not professionally, just our own cars) and we ran into a few issues which keep us from doing much.

1.) Humidity. Do you wash your cars in the garage in the winter ? How do you handle the humidity ? When its +20 in the garage and -20 outside you cant really open up the bay doors . Do you have some kind of dehumidifier ?

2.) Sling / ******. How do you keep the polishing ****** off the walls / cabinets / ceiling. I was thinking of putting in some commercial style curtains on tracks or loops that I could hang. Do you just let it go where it goes ?

I love your shop. The tile is perfect without the staggered pattern. Keep up the good work and keep the pictures coming.

Hello guys!

I unfortunately don't have any news regarding the city. I've decided to leave it as is for now. I know contesting this whole issue will be a PITA and also pretty difficult as my parent's place is indeed in residential area with no commercial buildings close by.

I do, however, have some great and exciting news! I just purchase a property with my lovely girlfriend. It's a small and cozy townhouse with a garage! There is roughly 270 sq/f. I also checked with the city and i'm allowed running a small business in there!

Here's a picture, it's the middel unit by the way

.jpg

I will eventually build a nice work space here. We'are moving in June/July so you should be expecting more updates by then!

I'll answer all the questions above tomorrow!

Cheers,

Nico

Hey Nico,

Sorry to hear you had to walk away from all your hard work, on the other hand, your parents have a beautiful garage space. Congratulations on your home purchase. I know you worked very hard on your electrical certification, did you find employment with a company?

Regards,
Mag

Hey guys!

It's been a while, sorry I took so long to reply back. I was actually pretty busy with work, spring rush was pretty intense!

I haven't done anything to the new garage yet, I've been spending a lot of time doing minor renovations in the house. I'm currently installing hardwood floors in the second story, I should get started with the backsplash tomorrow! My dad has been helping a lot, he's being really really good, so glad he's there for me, always willing to lend me a hand.

Here are some pictures of the garage in its current condition:

First purchase! I got very lucky with this toolbox. I only had 53" in the space I had for it, it measures 52" wide!

As you can see it needs A LOT of work, but i'll make it look good!

Hi Magneto!

Thanks for the support. I've been working as an apprentice since April now, my boss is the nicest person in the world. I have a lot of fun with all the guys I work with! They gave me a hand with the house too

Just read through this thread, I gotta say you transformed your parents garage, damn that was awesome. I can't believe how much the tile made a difference, I have to do that to my garage! Is there any concern over it cracking under the weight of a vehicle/lift? Nice job man!

Hello!
I have the same scissor lift like you, are you happy with it?

I'm building a garage right now and made a recess in the slab and lowered it down flush with the floor.

My lift 1400 mm.

Best regards
