A few questions regarding doing a metal roof:
Anyone using the inexpensive and thin 12' corrugated material at the big box stores? (roughly $18 a sheet- I imagine you get what you pay for, right?)
I was thinking of putting that on top of OSB (I have some 5/8 already).
Should I put down 30# felt first?
Is there any way to do a ridge vent with metal roofing?
What do I need to do at the edge of roof on the gable ends?
If I were to put it over plywood, do I need to put the foam/wood closure things at the bottom (or top)?
Sorry, I've been in carpentry for most of my adult life but I've never worked with this stuff and the boss lady says she really wants a metal roof...

I don't have anything to offer except that when we were recently looking at houses, the inspector pointed out that this one particular house with metal roofing had no ridge vents or turbines installed. He said the heat would rise through the soffit vents and have no where to escape, that house failed inspection for that among other reasons.

Most box stores are not going to carry all the pieces you need, trim etc.....It might be a little bit more expensive, but I know Mueller, not sure if you have one there, they will come to your house, measure and give you estimate on materials, you can install it yourself or have them do it.

If this is going on your house I would definitely go this route, however if its just your shop or something else you could try to piece meal it together

Here is the link

I also bought my metal bldg. from them as well, installed that myself

You get EXACTLY what you pay for in metal.
no need for the roofing felt.
yes you will still need the end closures if you go over plywood.
Your metal supplier will have the edge pieces.

I put it on my shop, good metal will come with a 50 year paint warranty, they also will be able to have it cut to your length, no seams in the middle of the runs.

I was able to save over $900 by finding a local metal supplier, vrs buying from the local box stores. I'm pretty sure I ended up paying about $2.20 a liner foot for a 3' wide sheet. The local box store was $2.85 a foot and the local builders supply house was $3.05. Keith

May want to give these guys a call. Not sure why, but they don't have an online site that mentions the fact that they sell metal roofing. All kinds of metal roofing. I found out by accident and gave them a call. Best price I've found so far for the same product..... 2000.00 cheaper for the same job.

Not sure if getting someone down here from Virginia would be cost efficient, but I'm definitely going to look for better metal. I appreciate the links! Back with more questions soon, I'm sure.

When you say carpetentry, do you mean as a hobby or as a profession ?

If it's your profession, I'm sure you know guys that do pole barns, why not talk to them and work a day with them to gain some experience ?

These guys service the Mid-Atlantic region from what I was told. For them, you're right next door.

Here's a link to the thread where I was asking some of the questions you have asked, or will ask. The GJ helped educate me and also provided a ton of links that lead to the correct information for my particular needs.

I read your statement "The Boss Lady really wants a metal roof..." to mean Mama wants a roof on "HER" house. If that's the case, you want it right and reliable. The homework now will be worth it later. Done right, 25-50 years can be expected from metal roofing.

Good Luck,

You get EXACTLY what you pay for in metal.

Word! Do NOT go cheap on your roof - we have this old pre-ww2 era heavy-as-hell corugated on the shop, and it's just *now* starting to show some rust & warpage issues. I saw a shop and home with this pretty green metal roof the other day, went and talked to the owner, found out found out it was the original -copper- roof from over 100 years before, and they had zero issues with it. That would be a bank-buster now, but it really got me thinking.

And yeah, go local - not only will you probably get a better deal, but if issues come up later you won't get the box store runaround!
