I'v been working too much. The wife planted flowers and mulched and made the yard look great.

Today I was doing some spring cleaning in the garage. I was reorganizing the mess made from winter and me just dropping stuff and moving on. While cleaning I notice that my spade still has dirt stuck to it. then I find the edger has soil still stuck to it

So I sit and have a beer ;) then continue to clean up. I find that in my wheel barrow there is a mostly empty bag of potting mix and a few bags of plant food.
I move that and under that pile was a bunch of grass and dirt. when I dump out the grass and dirt I find my framing hammer with roots and dirt all over it :willy_nil

I send a text because she is at work "a hammer is not for digging". the reply was "I couldn't find my potting shovel so I used the hammer but then I found the shovel next to my gloves stuffed in the cap catcher under the bottle opener........ why did you put them there." :eyecrazy:

I think in the interest of nocturnal activities I am going to let this one slide

If I could get my wife out there doing all the stuff your wife did without my involvement, I'd let her use my framing hammer and maybe buy her one.

I can tell already that this isn't going to turn out very well.

I don't know what is worse....leaving a lock off of the storage building, or finding a tool buried. :headscrat :lol_hitti

Actually a straight claw hammer is a pretty good sod-busting and weeding tool. Turn it over and it is great for pounding clods, stakes, . . . well, you get the picture.

Considering all the gardening your wife has done, you might consider buying a hammer just for her.

On second thought, she already has her own hammer, donated by you. That means you get a new hammer for your use!

IMHO, everything in life has a positive ending!!

Got you beat. 100%! I come home from work, the wife is painting the living room. I see my Starrett blade sitting on the living room floor. "What is my ruler doing in the living room?"

"I needed to close the paint can, and you told me to put something on the can to protect the can from the hammer."

"I said a scrap chunk of wood, not my $80 ruler."

"You spent $80 on a ruler?!"

"I'll be in the garage."

I don't get what the fuss is about. Its a hammer. Now if she had left it in the yard and you found it with the mower you might have something.

Im not really sure what to tell you about soil on the gardening tools and in the wheel barrow.

My wife called me at work and told me that she had hung that picture she had been nagging me about herself. I told her that I was delighted that she took the initiative and asked her how she did it. She told me she went out to my shop and got a molly screw and some bright silver wire and just hung it up. When I got home there was a thin thread of solder stretching down the wall and the picture was sitting on the floor behind the couch. I kept a straight face but it wasn't easy. ;)

If you got rocks in your soil...hammers are definitely for digging. I'm trying to think of the "proper" hammer for king kong-ing stones probably one of those masonry hammers and a chisel but I tend to just use a drilling hammer and chisel (or without the chisel) or my "stormbreaker" homemade pipe hammer.

Plus one if you get the reference...there's gotta be at least one sort-of nerd on here probably an engineer. I wasn't a big thor guy though.

Not really the same but over the winter we had a storm with about a foot. The girl got out of work early and decided to snow blow. Never before used one. I walked her through the process over the phone and about 3 hours later she called and said she was done. 3 hours? Come to find out, she forgot about the step of turning the idle up. So she ran this thing on turtle ha ha. did the whole driveway and sidewalk though. I tried not to be too hard on her, but damn I could just picture it.

its just a hammer, if she used it to get something done I'd say good for her. I doubt it hurt it any other than made it dirty.

I'd be a little upset if my wife used my Estwing to dig the yard up, a cheaper hammer not so much.

Buy her a nice pink hammer for her to use "where ever."

Years ago I had a lot of tools at my fathers house. My father and stepmother used my hard handle snapon striking prybars for tearing up hardwood floors and got them covered in paint and solvents. They also used my hammers and long matco prybar for yard work?? I bought them a harbor freight tool set after that.

My wife doesn't really do much in the yard, but she always wants to tell me what I can & cannot plant. I politely told her she doesn't earn any input on what gets planted unless she's actively involved. She does help weed the patio now and then.
On the other hand, recently she said she wanted to learn how to use the snow blower, so since she had rotator cuff surgery I used it as an excuse to add an electric starter. I don't know why, but I'm somewhat addicted to upgrading that thing. Late last winter I installed a Clarence's impeller kit, added a remote chute deflector control, extended the chute sides to reduce spray back & replaced the stock skids with Armorskids. Almost makes me wish for snow. Well, not really.

Sorry, I went off on a tangent there...

she is going outside to futz around in the yard

Me: don't dig any holes with my hammer
Her: I might use your chainsaw. gives me the finger with a smile on her face and walked away

im not really upset about the hammer other than the tools being put away dirty

Yep... I think its time for a new hammer, hell $28 for peace in the family? You should have told her how awesome it looked, and... well... never mind!

Now, if you'll pardon me, I need to go out with a 1 1/2" bit and my I-R air drill and punch holes for seedlings.

And by the way - I have this cool thing called a digging bar, weighs about 20 lbs, chisel end on one side, hook end on the other, works really good for breaking up rocky soil. Then again, so does a tractor and a cultivator attachment! (Darn, now I gotta check out craigslist... )

Come to find out, she forgot about the step of turning the idle up. So she ran this thing on turtle ha ha. did the whole driveway and sidewalk though. I tried not to be too hard on her, but damn I could just picture it.

Imagine what was going thru her mind... What a POS, doesn't it go any faster than this??!! --lol--

I use my 2' Starrett for checking cylinder heads and such. I'm not sure it would be any good after getting hammered. Buy yourself a new one.

Fixed it for ya.

Mrs. Outlander found this thread funny, especially when we discussed her leaving her gardening tools (minus a hammer) in the grass.

My wife bought me a screwdriver at a garage sale, a big flat blade craftsman, the only answer I have for the wear on the blade is it was extensively used as a tillage tool.

Well at least yours was found inside , I found my Estwing framing hammer outside in the flower bed I was not a happy camper. Then I found my brand new Snap On leather gloves ,after they had gotten wet , in the fork of a tree in the back yard  ! I can't stay mad at her too long ,but she does have her own toolbox now !

I suppose the next thing you'll tell us is that a flat blade screwdriver and a crescent wrench aren't a combo mortising tool and that a phillips isn't a hole punch.

In fact feel free to ship me broken straight claw hammers, I will invent a new tool with them. I had intended to buy a couple for use as proto and already had a full cart last time I was in a store.

When my wife asks me for a tool I tell her,

"Sure, it's in the tool box"

"Which drawer?"

"I dunno, I haven't labeled them yet"

She opens one or two drawers and then stomps off looking for another problem to solve.

^^This. I bought my wife her own tool box a couple years ago. It didn't stop her from using my tools but at least now I know where to find them. :D
