Ok, I'll be the first to say it just to get it out of the way -

Get the Harbor Freight 26" combo. It'll save you a bunch of money, and should hold up better than the average Cman offerings. (the Cman Heavy-Duty versions may be better than the regular boxes, IDK I haven't looked at them)

I have read numerous posts on here suggesting that set. But after seeing this video it really scared me away from getting it.

Way over priced. Look for used localy, or hf as said.
But if new, i'd say international, homak, hf, or husky.

I was going to purchase the HF 26" set when a friend handed me on older version of this Craftsman set free. :pimpflash In compasion, the HF box seems sturdier and if I was paying for it I still would have bought the HF 26". The craftsman isn't bad though. I have quite a bit in mine and it handles it fine. The Griplatch was broken on a couple draws when I got it but I was able to fix it. Just be careful as it doesn't seem to like too much abuse.

I'd suggest getting a wider shorter box that is in your price range. I've got a 26" kobalt box and the drawers are only 21 or 22 (i forget) inches wide. I'll take fewer wide drawers over more skinny drawers any day.

The 44" HF box is under 400

I have that same box (premium heavy duty) in the 40-inch version. I am totally satisfied with it. Much better quality than the lower level lines and still US made. My only comment would be that the price is too high. I got the 40 inch combo for $50 more than that. It goes on sale for that price every other month or so (basically the same price as a HF combo but with better warranty and US made).

If you like the craftsman I would wait for the bigger one to go on sale. Mine isn't full yet, but I'm working on it.

I have 2 Craftsman, 2 Husky and 2 Harbor Freight boxes. Multiple garages and an enclosed trailer. I would say the HF are the best built. I wouldn't buy the Craftsman boxes again. They were more than double the HF box price.

I would avoid the newer Cman boxes. Those list the Dynaglide slides, I'm guessing they are friction slides and not ball bearing. Like most stuff Cman these days, their quality is lacking.

If you want Good Cman boxes, buy the bigger more expensive professional boxes, the problem with this is that you will over pay for what you get. The other choice is to look an CL for an older box and you can find more than just CMan on CL.

I'd buy a HF 44" box over a modern Cman box.

I just bought one of these from Sears http://www.sears.com/craftsman-26-i...kNo=14&blockType=G14&blockNo=14&blockType=G14

I had some points and a gift card Sears gave me because they screwed up and order.......less than $50.00 delivered the next day. While I know that this is not anywhere near a "premium" top box, I was pretty impressed with how smooth the drawers opened/closed...........especially for my low investment. Only time will tell how it will hold up.

+1 for that reply.

HF 44" gives you a lot for the money. Cman... gives you a thinner box that you may regret buying.

Might check out strictly toolboxes. I believe they even advertise on the main page of garage journal.

They have a house line of boxes that look darn near tool truck quality.

This is an older thread, but worth the read for all the info and pictures:

Tool chest review - Sears, Tractor Supply, Lowes, Home Depot, Harbor Freight
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=153445

Great thread, but it doesn't actually compare to the "premium heavy duty" craftsman boxes. They are the next line up from those in that thread. I happened to be at harbor freight today so I did a little drive by of the HF box. My craftsman premium heavy duty box felt every bit as stiff as the HF and has a lifetime warranty (assuming Sears doesn't go our of business....) and is US made.

I was actually about to buy the HF box, but then found the craftsman for just under $700 for the 40 inch top and bottom.

That being said, for the price for the HF 26, I would buy that before I spent the kind of money that the OP had in his links. I think the HF and the "premium heavy duty" craftsman boxes are of similar quality, so given the big price difference, HF wins out if the OP wants a 26 inch box.

As someone else stated, browse your local craigslist. I've seen great looking snapon and other boxes going for around that price.

Get a Gray Tool box, they are Made in Canada and when they have theirs sales on their pro series it is VERY reasonable for the quality.

The top chest I have:

The bottom roller I just got:

Good news is that they sell it in all kind of drawer layouts:

97106.png

97211.PNG

97216.PNG

Etc.

I think I paid something like $350-$400 for the top chest and similar for the roller, both bought on sale for 1/2 off. They do half off sales for one variant or another of their pro series tool box at all times of the year.
