Just started a home build, but I am more excited about the garages

After about a year or so of planning, revising and waiting we have finally started our dream home. Truth be told, I am more excited about the garage areas than anything else. Both garages are 26 ft x41 ft. One is for the toys and workshop area and the other one is for the daily cars, bikes etc.

There is a Port Cochere (shown in the plans) that will be the entrance into the garage courtyard if you will. I wanted to create a space that was private even with all of the doors open if I wanted. I did not want anyone to see what was in the garages from the street.

We broke ground on June 10th and things are moving along nicely. Excavation is complete, footers are poured and they are in the middle of setting up the concrete forms for the basement / foundation.

Obligatory celebration with the wife and I (Sparkling cider for my daughter)

This is from across the street, this is the day they broke ground.

This is later that day, took the wife and kid back to see the progress.

In the foreground, this is looking over the attached / daily garage that is towards the back of the house.

In this pic, the footers are done. If you look close at where the excavator is on the left side of the pic, you can see the footers for the front garage and right to the left of the house in the background you can see the footers for the back garage.

Again, right near the excavator you can see the footers are poured and they are now putting in the forms.

I love that layout. It gives you a motor pool right in the center of your home. Can't wait to see it completed. Good luck.

Very impressive plan and off to a nice start. What part of the country.

Thanks!!! Very excited. This is in Maryland.

Thank you, we like the layout too, it adds some interest to the front of the house instead of a front or side loading garage. Creates privacy for shenanigans in the man cave. All positives as far as I am concerned :D

Very nice, I like the layout with the garage court yard. Having grown up and living in an urban area, I'm security consensus. Your layout is one of the best I seen. Plus you have a private court yard that can double for entertainment purposes. Looking forward to progress posts.

Thanks all. I will be posting progress as it happens. Overall it is scheduled to take 1 yr to completion so it's gonna be a long journey.

Is the crew doing side jobs between yours? Is it just a 2 man crew?

Not sure why it would take that long:headscrat

I'm a builder, BTW.

No, think there is at least a 1 mos padding in there.

Pretty big project overall. 3 out of 4 builders were in the same timeframe.

Well, the surprise is that the daily garage is 10 ft height, the workshop / toy garage is 12 ft ceilings so if I happen to find more cars than spaces that I can always go up :D. Made sure I have room for storage lifts if needed. So, 9 in all.

Very cool layout, I really like the courtyard with the privacy!

I like working in my garage in the summer with all the doors open, but I don't like the fact that anyone driving by can see all my stuff...

KS,

You're going to have an impressive basement there too.

Is it too late to add an entrance from the garage (the one adjacent to the house) to the basement?

I have a much more modest home but one feature I really miss is a way to go from the garage to the basement without going through the house. Sometimes I'm dirty, sometime's I'm moving wood, sometimes I'm getting tools, etc.

That's not actually a bad idea but unfortunately it gets poured tomorrow. Eventually it will be finished so I would imagine I will not be using it much for storage.

Yes, it's 2 stories plus basement. This is the only front elevation pic I have at the moment. Sorry it is sideways...lol

That looks really nice, is it brick and stone cladding?

Honestly that is an older render, it has since changed. It is more "rustic" now, with stone, some stucco and hardiplank siding. We were not fans of all of the brick.

KSwerks: I'm in northern balto county. Have a 20x20 and an attached 32x28. Taking me forever to get it all done the way I want it! (insulation, heat, etc.)

I love in Reisterstown now, it's about 7.5 miles from the new spot. Where are you?

Those are some pretty impressive sounding places, I would not sell yourself short on that. Nice size spaces for sure. Congrats.

I White Hall near Parkton and Hereford - in the infamous Hereford Zone. I lived in Chartley in Reisterstown far about 10 years (about 30 years ago!)
