Hey there. I was wondering what you folks do to organize your car washing/detailing stuff. I was thinking one of the HF carts, but not sure that would be the best use of space. Anyone have a cart or something else they use for this stuff? I'm thinking of stuff like waxes, wash, long reach washing pads, buffer, etc. Thanks.

Not mine, but great inspiration for anyone looking for a cart. Pretty simple idea and very functional. I actually plan on using the same design to keep from walking back and forth to my shelves and cabinets. A cart also gives you a place to set you detailing tools and products other then in or in the car. For more specs on the cart search detailing cart and autogeek and you can find a full write up.

I would consider something made of plastic or other soft material.

Metal tends to have some sharp edges and you wouldn't want to run it into the car and scrape the paint.

If bad things can happen, they will.
But that's my luck.

I don't have pics at the moment but I picked up the 3 shelf cart from HF. Very similar set up to the one posted above. I'll try and get pics up tomorrow after work.

I use an airline galley cart. Works perfectly for my needs with alot of storage. However, unless one is not in the right place at the right time they can be difficult (and expensive) to get one.

I use a three level plastic cart from Northern Tool. It is large enough to hold several buffers along with the needed pads, chemicals and towels.

I have given a lot of thought to designing one that would be exactly what I wanted, but end up using what I have because it works well.

What does "detailing" mean?

It means different things to people, depending on their level of skill and OCD.

It refers to the practice of cleaning/maintaining/improving a vehicle's appearance.

To me, detailing is turning this:

For organization, cabinets, drawers and various Rubbermaid type containers on wire shelving units. For detailing, a 3 shelf Luxor utility cart from Costco online. The top shelf is flat, perfect for resting a polisher or two. The middle shelf has a deep lip around it...perfect for hanging trigger bottles. Both lower shelves have sufficient height in them.

This would be an excellent cart to convert... WEN 73002 500-Pound Capacity Service Cart for $69.99 http://tools.woot.com/offers/wen-service-cart-500lb-capacity-1?ref=cnt_dly_img

HF has the clone of that one everyday for about $80 post coupon, very durable at least the one I have in a larger 24x36 size, held a short block fine etc. and oil doesn't seem to bother the plastic a bit.

Bought a used ATD 3 shelf plastic cart, great while it lasted, but seems they all eventually break at the wheels and mine was NOT heavily loaded, poor design. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000OUZC9A/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I am thinking about building something, narrow, like 18", 36L 36H, no shelves except the bottom platform with a offset peg board sticking up to hang things from (including some small shelf type things. Offset, say 6" and 12", so one side gets bulky items like vacuum hoses, and other side gets brushes and polishers. Plastic mat on the bottom so stuff can drip.

Thanks for reminding me of another unfinished garage project that got derailed / postponed by having a baby and moving. Might be time to bring this one back to the front of the line.

I've got a basic 2 shelf Craftsman structural foam cart. I want to say it's about 28 inches long + handle by 16-18" wide. Bottom shelf holds a low profile rubbermaid tub with lid for dirty / used towels headed to the laundry and a 23" plastic toolbox for clay, tape, various small brushes and tools. Top shelf has buckets and long handle brushes stored on it but usually empty when in use so i can keep product, polisher, pads, etc. close by when working. I mounted a 4" 2 gang electrical box on one corner that has two duplex receptacles fed by a 25' extension cord. At one time I was going to mount a light or two on one side for working on sides of cars but haven't gotten around to it but being able to plug in a polisher or two and a portable work light right where I'm working is convenient.
