My Lista Story (or how you should be wary of govliquidation.com). Or, even better, can I get a you ****, but not for me?

I’ve been waiting to post this until some financials aspects related to the transaction got resolved. That is your first hint at things going horribly wrong, but it’s not all bad, keep reading!

I’ve wanted to re-purpose my third bay in an attached 3 bay garage into a nice shop & home office for myself. My son is getting into the terrible twos, and working from home, it’s hard to stay focused all day long with the noises he’s making as he rampages through the house. I’ve gravitated over time to clean, industrial looks. So naturally, I liked Bull’s Lista cabinet thread, Jack Olson’s Lista & Stronghold acquisitions, akdiesel’s Lista setup, and of course motorhead’s excellent FAQ/write-up. I’m hooked….

I scoured craigslist daily, and govliquidation.com weekly. Finally, a massive amount of Lista auction lots pop up for an auction in Phoenix. Jackpot! I set my budget limits in my head, and start adding items to my watch list. This auction is a Garage Journal dream come true! Listas!! Strongholds!!! Baldors!!! Clausings!!! Massive pieces of machinery that I can only guess at their created purpose! I get visions of walls absolutely COVERED in Lista blue goodness, and a second wall covered in Stronghold awesomeness. Will my concrete slab actually hold all this awesomeness I am going to WIN??
lista2.jpglista3.jpg

I drive my wife nuts talking about Lista for days waiting for the auction to start. I think at this point, she finally gave in and looked at what I was going to bid on and said, “I don’t get it.” Honey, you know those nice Coach purses you like? It’s like this. Imagine this is a purse like that, except it holds man stuff: it’s indestructible, fireproof, bombproof, idiot proof, made of solid steel here in ‘Merica, weighs 600 lbs, and will be passed down to our great great great grandchildren. Yeah, it’s like that. And look, it’s freaking blue! She still doesn’t get it. But bless her, she said go for it!

Oh, right. Forgot about the Strongholds. What was I saying about a budget before?
stronghold1.jpgstronghold2.jpg

Lawson’s anyone? I think I hear the faint whimper of my credit card off in the distance. Yes, if you listen carefully, you can hear it….

Finally, after 2 days of bidding, I win two lots! Here’s what I got. That workbench picture is actually for 2 of them.

lista1.jpglista4.jpg

Now, I hire a rigger (super awesome and down to earth guy by the way), and wait. Apparently this auction has some strict removal conditions. So I make the appointment…. And ….. friggin….. Wait. Oh, and I nag the wife about how awesome it is that I won these items! More rolling of the eyes, but maybe that Coach analogy is starting to sink in?

So the day comes, I bring my Dad along (he’s retired and looking for adventures). We get to the warehouse, and the govliquidation rep immediately indicates something isn’t right. He can’t find my 2 Lista workbenches. What? Can’t find them? Well, they are pretty big and heavy, can’t imagine they got too far. He didn’t find that funny. Then it sinks in - this guy is serious. I won’t be getting my Listas after all. And these were really nice ones too – 60” long, ash wooden butcher-block tops, and three banks of drawers. And best part? 2 of them for $525 each! Oh the agony of defeat.

But, I did get my consolation prize: the Lista cabinet with three pull out shelves. At least my rigger will earn his keep, burn some diesel fuel, and generally piss off the tree huggers with fumes from his ¾ ton pickup…. By the way, did I tell you how awesome Adam was? If you need a rigger in Phoenix, give him a call.

So, back to the financial fiasco. I can’t say that I am happy (because I didn’t get all that Lista awesomeness). They issued me a refund for the 2 workbenches pretty much straightaway. But I was insisting they eat at least some of the cost of me hiring Adam. Back and forth, few emails here and there, I get mad, they go off and work something out with the bosses, more email, more days, and today I finally got the check in the mail and promptly cash it.

So, the damage? The consolation prize I got for $280. Not a great deal, but I can live with it. It’s a good first Lista. A bruised ego, yep, not going to have that awesome Lista setup for quite awhile now…. unless the wife sells some of those purses and I give Motorhead Extraordinaire a call. Hmmmmmm, not a bad idea actually!

I’d recommend some level of caution when dealing with govliquidation – check out the lots during a preview if you can, etc. (This particular auction, you couldn’t). And, pay with Amex. If they hadn’t been as prompt on the refunds as they were, it would have been nice to have Amex do a charge back and hassle them vs. me trying to get my money back.

Anyways, hope you all have better luck than me in your Lista hunts. Cheers!

I'm glad you were able to at least get something! You're taking it well. I'd be pretty upset and raising hell with the auctioneer.

If you're going to be purchasing multiple items consider giving Joe @ Motorhead Extroadinaire a call. If you keep an eye on their junkyard deals you can pick up a couple of items at the same time for a good price. I was surprised at how reasonable the freight shipping cost was from MA to CA for to SC900s and an SC1350.

I would have blown a gasket.

Believe me, I was livid. I basically think that 1 of 4 scenarios were possible here:

1. They (govliquidation) purposefully lost my items and gave them under the table to a higher bidder, or a friend of someone who was there handling the pick-up activities.

2. The Lista benches were stolen before or during the transport from the location where they were at the company auctioning them to the pick-up location.

3. The Lista benches were stolen out of the pick-up location.

4. govliquidation sold something they never had.

In none of those scenarios could I really do anything about it. I think I handled myself fairly well considering the royal screwing over govliquidation gave me.

Lets just say I'll think twice about dealing with them in any future case, and will not be shy about telling others to do the same.

Lol... nice Coach and Lista analogy. She rolled her eyes on that bc she's a clever woman.

Coach = Craftsman (litterally! both brands got water-down)
Lista = Louis Vutton

Then again, telling your wife you are buying Louis Vuitton anything cannot be a good idea ....!

Those would be my guess. Govliquidation doesn't really do squat, they just take the incoming information and post it on the site. So either someone at the base changed their mind after it was already photographed & submitted and somehow notification didn't get passed down...

or someone else was there before you picking up a bunch of stuff that was probably next to your cabinets and they pulled the tags off your items and just loaded them up too when nobody was watching...

At least you got your money back... There will always be more...

Those looked like really nice cabinets. You would have gotten a smoking deal. I wouldnt have been calm either knowing they went missing. Good luck in finding replacements.

All the GL sites I have been to, many; photo the items on site. Something else happened to these. OR look closely at the auction, was it non DLA, they could have pulled the lot?

Quality or not its just sitting there in the box,and that smooth slide, mmm, me like, but i like my bucks better, I say again, Listas are overrated and overpriced, if not all of us would own one or more. I wasn't arguing the quality aspect, you were.

The drawers on my red HF roll smoothly out on their own, floor slanted a bit, and they come out smooth as silk, (own their own, keep shoving them back, they keep coming out)

listas are overrated and overpriced. do i like them?, you betcha, but for the money, its a waste. those tools are in a toolbox graveyard until called upon to do their duty, cardboard box, wood shelf, turntable, gallon can cut open, soap bottle cut open, its just storage

i have 3 proto 6 or 7 drawer boxes, cheap stuff and thin, HF stuff good stuff, craftsman, broke a slide, plastic slider i think- some old red boxes 35yrs old still going

i don't stand there and slide my drawer in and out and put a pressure gauge on it, i open it use it shut it, too much **** bs about boxes on this site, snappy is nice, and so ? use what you can afford and use the rest to buy quality tools, or HF maybe.Your call cowboy, that's just the way it looks from my high horse.,

Not ragging on you man. Calm down.

The ones he has pics of are Lista's that are rated for 440lbs a drawer. No hf, craftsman, matco, mac, or snappy can do that, with out upgraded secondary sets of slides. And structure is built just as great.

Can those hold my 3/4, and 1" sockets? Nope my hf cart can't, my snappy box can't.
These boxes are ment for stronger use then a hf.
And yeah, hf makes a good box, just no where near the same level.
