Re: The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

Just sitting here in garage looking... planning in head next move. Getting alittle flustered about how fit my MBC and Craftsman in the the work bench wall. I also need to find a home for my welder, gas cylinders, o/a torches, planer and a bandsaw which is at my dads house.
I have 40 inchs between the tall cabinet and last cman roller.
pyneve6u.jpg

I believe that if I remake the dp with the cman chest for the storage that's 12.5 inches. If I redo welding table and use the mbc which is 26.5 should be able to fit everything bottom the bench. If I always make the welding table max 16 inchs deep I can fit a small welding cart behind and store O/A behind the other bottom rollers. That's a lot of freaking fab work I just described. Ok thinking of plan b

Plan B looking at the line up on the wall I believe at think point it will stay as is. I think the smarter plan is to do a tool placement assessment and organization first starting with the HF boxes. I never really set those boxes up since I had them. Tonight I will go through and organize those and go from there.

Re: The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

I wanted to take a moment and thank those that have left there comments and continue to follow my progress. Every nice comment makes all the hours I spend moving, tweaking and posting all worth it. Many of those ppl I have become good friends with and share my passion for the thing we call a garage.

I do apologize for the boring posts sometimes I do. I have a lot of passion for the garage and GJ. That's why I've taken a different approach in my thread. I like to show the highs, lows and the points between. I also try explaining the reasoning of moves I make cause in my garage its a case of move one things take moving 2 others. The ppl following this thread are in different stages of their own garage and I want to give the followers a true perspective into having a garage such as I have.

If one thing I do is change things. Over the years hobbies changes, wants and needs change so your garage must change to. I tried many ideas just to change them next week or in the process find something new. I show those failures to show the new guys hey some things dont workout but at least your trying. Nothing hurts in trying and most of the time it doesn't cost anything but time.

Once again thank you all.... You guys are great.

Hey Garard. I feel like we are all a help group for garage junkies. Plan A seamed like a lot of work and our wife's will never understand that part of the reward is the hard work. I would love to have a huge space, but that has problems too. As many have shown its the effort and ingenuity that define our passion. Keep it up.:pimp:

My name is Gerard and I am a Garage addict. LOL Bigger space is always good. At 40 now, I've kinda figured out what my projects will be. Of course there's the "if I win the lottery dream" but back in reality I've realized that I could be fine with a oversize 3 car. Place for 2 cars and possible 3rd if needed. I'm upside down in this house and with no plans on moving I'm stuck making this work. Thanks for the motivation. I'm trying just scratching head and you know that's bad when even I can't figuire up some crazy idea

Re: The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

Been viewing a lot of threads and man ppl done a lot done this weekend. I cant say I accomplish much. I did get some paint and some stripper. I test sprayed on drawer on brown craftsman on yep gonna have to prime it first. Tried test piece with stripper on gray machinist thinking I could just remove the top layer and not remove hammertone. It went down to bare metal. I had a disagreement with spray can so brushedvon some hammered paint on the brown machinist but that didn't work. Bunch of paint testing and nothing to show for it. I did accomplish one thing this weekend.
ehu4ysy5.jpg

ujaqedyd.jpg

Redid all my landscape lighting and planted few palms. I can say at least one thing came out right this weekend.

Oh forgot, I did manage to reorganize most of my tool boxes trying to put all hand tools on the HF bench. I still got some more to do but got about 75 percent of tools done

Re: The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

Well, picked up some paint at HD other day. I got a closer matching hammered paint. Rustoleum hammered antique pewter color matches imo better than other stuff I got previously.
yhyzupeq.jpg

I looked at paint last night only to realize I got latex primer and paint. I returned them and checked out HD paint. I made a mental note and went across street to Lowe's. I went there and no rustoluem hammered in a quart, no gloss apple or banner red in quart. They did have latex enamal in red but unsure of real color and a rustoluem professional in red but also unsure of finish color. I'm so frustrated with painting. I believe I'm decided to will go to Walmart where I got the Krlyon and buy a quart of primer and red oil based to use my spray gun that's been sitting in a box for years. oh that's strange either HD, or Lowes carry Krylon.
If I did accomplish one thing tonight I did get a kit to finish my air line to workbench.

Well, I have a request. LOL Well Hot Chop Shop its really nothing special. Here's my compressor.
4yta6yju.jpg

I used to having about 125 to 150 ft of hose on it just coiled over the handle. I tried my hand at a hose reel not too long ago. I cut a hose down one section from compressor to reel and another section on the reel. Honestly, I didn't care for it.
So I bought another compressor with a manifold on it.
a6evytev.jpg

Now I can have both hoses hooked up at same time. I have a 75 ft (black) coiled there and ran other (red) line up wall, over garage door, and down other wall.
8a5a9u6y.jpg

My splice
gyhere3a.jpg

Ill put hose somewhere on the work bench wall and use a small coil hose while working on bench.
jyvyze2a.jpg

I got the truck now and been putting it in garage every night. The hose reel in center of ceiling doesn't work cause ill be hitting truck with any use and with the truck in the garage pulling the hose from compressor just doesn't make sense no more. I do plan on getting at some point another 100 ft black air line and hang it on compressor too. Yes, that's a lot of hose. Before I cut down the one hose I could reach to end of driveway with no issue. Actually when I did both bathrooms I ran hose in the house to bathrooms to air chisel old tile up without moving compressor. That's the real benefit of 100, 200 ft of hose.

Gerard, your outside lighting look just fantastic!! I like that a lot. I also had a few problems with trying to use that hammered paint. I just don't like it in the spray cans.
The chest will look great. I am anxious to see it come out. You might want to use one of those body shop filter bags to strain the paint if you use a spray gun. I do that, and it seems to level better.

Looking great!!!!

Herb

Thanks, Herb. I love lighting up a house at light. I mainly changed the spotlights to up light the house instead of uplight the main plantings. I did it on the front and liked it so did rest of house.

I sort of having issues it. I'm using the forged hammered antique pewter and having issues finding all the paint I want at one store. I went last night to walmart and got more Krlyon and more forged paint. I figured why change paint in middle of all this. Another problem is the brown boxes are wrinkle finish whole others are smooth. This should help them all blend together. I'm interested in using quarts and mixing but at this point I just want to get place together.

Ok ladies and gentleman. I had enough and its time for a thrashing. I'm sick and tried of looking at this place in this condition. I'm gonna try to get everything ( tool boxes ) painted and all this **** finalized. Next Friday is a 3 day weekend and I plan not to be working out here but spending time enjoying doing something else than fixing a garage. Plan is to get these areas done, everything painted, and put back in place.

Do I hear a little hint of frustration? LOL---Yeah, been there several times myself. Got into a nest today in my backshop, worked eight straight hours on it, knocked it out.

Yep, you need a little TLC and several of my Killian's Irish Reds.

It will happen, believe it!

Gonna let you guys in on a little 5 stitches garage secret. Ok how many times have you gotten a old tool box with good lock but no key? I got few with that problem so what do you do? Buy a new lock or take locksmith to have it rekeyed? Here's what I do.

This is the lock out of my new 7 door roller.
Remove the lock.
Remove the little pin
e9uguhe9.jpg

Remove the cyclinder
evu5y3ez.jpg

See all the gold pieces well those are the tumblers. Removes all of them.
y7usu8aj.jpg

Now put lock back together.
hatumana.jpg

Now reinstall the lock. Now go over to your screwdriver drawer and get out a flat head and use that as your key.
suruba6y.jpg
Now you can lock up your boxes with a simple flat screwdriver and no one will know the difference.

PS if you choose to you could leave last ( closest to the face) tumbler in and use that if choose. Since mine 70s and 80s craftsman keys match I chose to do this. I can just use another craftsman key of the same era to open box.

Good colors. These are going to be real nice. I like the red, it is bright and deep. The gray is bouncing right off of the red. I can't wait to see them back together. They are going to look great. I have been looking for that gray, but had not found it. Is it a mix from a store or did you do it?
Your going to have to share this secret with old Herb. Damn I wish I had that color for my Craftsman cantilever box. I am tempted to sand it off and redo with your gray. That is VERY close to OE color.

Great Job my friend!!

Herb

Well, I can't let the cat out of the bag tonight but got the boxes back together.
usa5ymyn.jpg

They are both the same color but the right seemed to lay flatter but the could have been cause of the texture on box.
I can show this.
9yhevuda.jpg

The right one is the brown one and painted front part of drawers and box. The left was the gray one. I just painted box and the drawers are original just dirt and grime on them. I still have to do badges and latches.

A lot of my paint didn't come out great but better than before. I just didn't take time to prep, sand etc to make these perfect. At this point just trying to finish this place up. I always knew myself these where just a freshening up and not a restore. I really think at some point I will restore them but not now. Tomorrow clean this place up and snap few more pics.

Well, 4 days to my 3 day weekend. I did accomplish a lot toward my goal. Boxes are all back together and in place.
The 2 machinist boxes are painted and in general home they will stay.

The 7 drawer is also done.
Before

After

Disregard the mess and I still got to organize some boxes.

Boxes look great. Tool boxes are such a lot of work to break down and clean/paint. Its amazing how much space is really in a tool box.
I did the same thing to one of my locks. The locksmith wanted $30 to make a key. Then he said, you could just remove most of the pins and use a screwdriver.

Thanks, yep I couldn't agree work. There's tons of areas to paint. I cheated not painting everything inside drawers and cabinets but at this point its gonna be fine. I know they need a full resto at some point but now I really do have time to have boxes broken down for the time needed to do such a job. I did clean and relube all the slides when I had them apart and those damn trim pieces are a ***** to get off the first time. Funny you did the screwdriver trick too. I fine it to work well.

Next project to figure out.
pe2yga5u.jpg

Taking dip out of the bench. I can't remake bench or put supports to the floor. So I'm thinking making a C channel out of bed frame across the 9ft of the bench back to the wall with a 45° angle piece for support. In theory I believe it will work.

Re: The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

There are many things I've done in my garage but the simplest and most valuable thing is casters on everything and having a flexible design. Here my point I'm doing work bench mods and needed to clear the area to work.
I put mbc, vises and loose ends over there.
e2u3adyp.jpg

I then moved all my mobile stuff to other side of garage.
qudu6e4y.jpg

Now I have all the room I need to work on the bench.
ary8y2um.jpg

I needed to room everything of bench so one less weight on it plus the C channel idea I needed to remove the hardboard top to add the C channel. It really took me longer to write this post and take pictures than it did to move things.

Gerard,
Garage and tool chests are looking great!

Not sure if it's possible but can you flip the benchtop before you install the C-channel? When a shelf in one of my cabinets sags like that, I flip them over and it often results in a big improvement and straightens the shelf in a relatively short time.

Hey Bob thanks for stopping by and thanks for the comments. Well, the C channel idea is out after trying some experiments. I also can't flip the bench but I could try and flip that front 2x4. I was gonna go to HD tonight and get 2 2x4 or 1 4x4 10ft long with some crown in them to stress bench up in middle and then my side supports stress ends up if you get that picture I'm drawing. I would like to keep bench that 2 1/2 inch height bit if have to ill put boards on edge with crown up and do that.
