Last week I saw an add for a garage sale online. In one of the pictures I could see 3 tool boxes, one of them was a machinist box. I've wanted a machinist box since I learned what one was. I was heading out for dinner with the family so I packed them in the truck and told them we had to make a quick stop. So we get there and I go straight for the box. It was loaded with stuff and the guy says $75 for everything. I said how much for just the box? He says then I have no where to put everything how about $60. I said I have to think. I look in my pocket and $20 (I thought i had more oops) so I asked the wife how much cash she has and she had $20. I thought worth a try, how about $40 and the guy said okay. :rocker: As soon as I got it home I looked through it and I think I did pretty good. It's a Union Steel Chest Corp. Box. Minor dings, has the key but unfortunately is missing the door that covers the drawers.
Now for what's in it.

Williams 10 in. superjustable wrench
Bonney ratchet wrench
Craftsman wrenches
Craftsman sockets
Craftsman punch set
Greenlee outlet tester
5 Proto 1/2 drive allen sockets
4 Proto 3/8 drive allen sockets
1 Williams 1/2 in drive 4 point socket
SK 3/4 to 1/2 in adapter
3/8 socket rail
4 in. crescent adjustable
6 in. Husky 1/4 drive extension
3 in. clamp
Klien screwdriver
Made in USA pry bar
Wood handled upholstery pointed tool (guessing because it doesn't seem strong enough to be an ice pick)
Miller Falls 4 in 1 offset screwdriver
A whole bunch of stainless steel dentist picks and a mirror
Misc. holesaws, bits,and hardware
Misc. Chinese and Taiwanese stuff
Half a pack of stanley blades

Sorry for the rambling story I'm tired.

Alinc, you are on a roll!

I spent a buck at a garage sale on the way home, (weekday sales are rare here except for estate sales, and those I can't make too often these days...)

I'll post that stuff tomorrow, if I can, with anything I get tomorrow. We are getting ready to drive up to Idaho for a couple of days to close my Dad's estate. I have the trailer sold, need to do that paperwork, and I have to sell/dispose of some of the contents, and go into the bank personally to close the account and empty the safe deposit box. (no clue what is in there... Probably ****...)

I have come to the conclusion that work was the main thing holding me back, being unemployed for the last 4 weeks has really allowed me to hunt full-time. I always knew work was sucking the life out of me.

Good luck with the estate stuff ,it's never a pleasant thing to have to do but it needs to be handled, travel safe. And feel free to stop at any sales along the way, pretty sure we won't bump into one another.

Chopper: sorry to hear you are having back issues. I used to go to a Shiatsu to get mine fixed for years until he passed. then a few years with the Chiro guys until I found out how to use an inversion table.

I bought the one at Costco that works great and for the last 5 years only have seen my old Chiro two times and those were when he bought me lunch and I bought his the next time. don't hang for more than 5 minutes at a time and that is the only advice my Chiro told me and believe it or not I had a bottle of Advil expire.

if you are willing to try and able to be ready to work through a little head rush dizziness and some ankle pain if you are around 230 pounds like I am. Costco up here sells Teeter Ups for about $275 and the best money I ever spent and sometimes a good used one on Craigs. i'm hoping for the best for you if you try this.

Outlaw: plenty of sunshine up this way so have a safe trip and good luck on the sales on the way there and back.

I went to a few garage sales today. Most were a bust with baby clothes, toys, and cheap glassware. I targeted two sales advertised on Craigslist before I left home. At the first, I found a 10-pound sledge hammer for $3.00, a "Ward Master" 1/2" T-handle for $0.50, a strap wrench for$4.00 (the pipe union shown is what I bought it to use on), and a long-C Craftsman BE ratchet for $5.00.

The ratchet is the earlier "female drive" version with a square insert you push from one side to the other for reversing. It is quite thin. I think it is the earliest closed-gear Craftsman ratchet model.

At the next targeted sale, I found a Parker air regulator, two 32 oz. mixing cups (not shown), a nice piece of copper flat bar, a metering head for my oil dispenser, a set of Tweco male/female connectors with a pigtail to attach to my welder, Two 25' 1/0 welding leads with Tweco M/F ends, two 25' 1/0 welding leads with Tweco ends - one male and one female, 15' of 1/0 welding lead, some fuel hose, and a brand new undercarriage for 5 gallon grease pails. All for $130.00.

The old working lead on my welder is getting cracked from age, and I wasn't looking forward to buying 60 feet of new lead to replace it. Now I can set up a 25' working lead and extend it if needed. I have 50' of good ground now, and will be able to extend that, too. I'll set up a 25' ground lead from this stuff, which will help at high amps if I can get the work close enough.

The rest of the sales were a bust except for 200 rounds of 20 gauge 7-1/2 shot for $20.00. They weren't on display, but they had a small sign behind the checkout table listing them.

Hit one planned stop this morning and a TOO on the way home. The ad for the planned stop said "tools" and to come early so I showed up just as the seller is opening the garage door. I ask about the tools and he shows me a blow-molded plastic case with a homeowners socket and wrench set and says that's it. Looking around briefly I see a 20" four drawer Durham parts cabinet at the back of the garage and not being shy I ask about it. The seller thinks about it for a moment and then says, "how about $10." Two of the drawers were pretty full as shown. I almost pulled the trigger on this set-up new a few weeks ago, glad now that I didn't. The TOO yeilded a Peterson 18SP welding clamp for a buck.

Stopped briefly at an auction near home and picked up a complete Craftsman circle H long C logo 1/4" drive set in the box. The set consists of 9 sockets, sliding t-handle, flex handle and two extensions. There's a ratchet in the box with it all that I'm not sure was part of the original set because of the difference in finish and the fact that it doesn't nest with everything else. Anyone know? Outlaw?

There was a big city wide yard sale today about 25 miles from where I live. Last year was the first time I went and there was a lot of sellers. Today there wasn't as many due to 50% chance of rain. The 1st stop of the day was my best stop. This was also a place where I scored several tools last year. I think I did better with him this year than last.

OK 3 more stops today,2 were fresh and one was re-pick of yesterday.
I had seen the vise listed in an estatesales.net promo, called the folks hosting the sale and was able to get some info on the vise last night and this morning which made me make the trek across the area 30 miles or so.
I have a Pig Roast to attend today, hopefully the pig is already cooking and I'm not the guest of honor;) or else I'd do my detailed, long winded blathering, which ya'll are probably tired of reading anyhow.Suffice it to say everything is Made in USA,except one Penens wrench (Canada)and a good portion starts with letters like Snap-On,MAC,Proto,Williams,Channellock,Wright...:rocker:
Today's total was $143.00 including the vises.
The metal cabinet is full of scrap/junk/some useable hardware.I may get a chance tomorrow to go thru it and I'll post more pics if I find anything good.

Yesterday afternoon's estate sale turned out to be a bust. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out in which direction to chase sales last night. Here's how I did:
Stop 1, estate sale. Spent $3.50.

Channellock 415 smooth-jaw pliers and MAC 1/4" drive ratchet, plus a pile of slide boxes.

A rare productive Target of Opportunity. Spent $12 at this garage sale.

16" Craftsman adjustable wrench, 16" SK 'Channellocks', parallel-jaw pliers (I think these are for installing eyelets), and a KD battery terminal puller. Also, the two rows of parts drawers.

Finally, a planned estate sale. Spent $3.63.

In alphabetical order, small Artisan DBE, Barcalo combo (fills a hole in my collection!), Billings combo, Billings DOE, Craftsman short DBE, Penens DOE, Vlchek pliers, Williams combo.

Itinerant: Nice pickup on the Craftsman 1/4" set with case. I have one, but I don't have the case. I'm always on the lookout for one, though. My set did not include the ratchet, nor the extension. So, who knows?

$5 for a Dazor. Did they make knock-off of these? I've not bought three or four in the past because I didn't see a manufacturer on them, this is the first one I've seen with a sticker.

Today's pick up: Wen 199 soldering gun kit, with box. It came with a 50/50 lead bar, some solder, and a manufacturer's warranty/service pamphlet, dated 1963, which I forgot to put in the picture. It is in absolute pristine condition, and will be replacing mine.

I also got a few goodies, mainly Craftsman 60's V, and SK/SK Wayne. Also, (1) Blue Point punch from 1951. The SK ratchet has peeling chrome, which I've never seen before on SK.

There is a development across the street from my parent's house and they have a pretty decent annual community yard sale.

The contents of this pic came from 2 yard sales. Stopped at over 20, got a few random dvd's here and there, but nothing good as in tools, vises, etc. until the last sale.

About halfway through, I picked up the rifle, a Winchester model 190 semi-auto .22lr with tube magazine, for $40. It was in the midst of a baby stuff yard sale, but dad also had a new Mossberg Plinkster .22 and a black powder muzzle loader with a scope for sale. This Winnie isn't in the best of shape, appears to be a "garage gun" that being said it shoots and cycles very smoothly. Bore is nice and bright. Just need to tweak the sights a little bit. :rocker::rocker:

As for the other stuff...
Ampco 24" pipe wrench, non-sparking bronze
Diamond Tool & Horseshoe K310 slip joint pliers, 10", look almost new
"The Sherman-Klove Co." #10570 half inch hex female drive ratchet, has a 1/2" hex male drive plug that also has a flat blade screwdriver on one end. Looks old.
3 Craftsman 1/2 drive extensions 3", 6", 10"
Cleveland Twist drill #3 taper shank drill drift
Brass USA 4-in-1 screwdriver, missing smallest piece
And the little tiny thing, a Mac feeler gage set...tiniest I've ever seen...12 leaves, 3/16" x 3/16" x 2.5" long
$20 for all of the tools

I'd say not a bad day for $60....:rocker:

Last yard sale got some cool stuff.

davethorik, nice deal on the 22, around here 22LR ammo is scarce or expensive. I picked up a similar mac feeler gauge set, it's an FG-15 1/4" wide 1/2" high and 2" long.

I also got a few goodies, mainly Craftsman 60's V, and SK/SK Wayne. Also, (1) Blue Point punch from 1951. The SK ratchet has peeling chrome, which I've never seen before on SK.

That chrome "peeling" on the S-K ratchet is likely from heavy use and banging on obstructions during heavy use or using as a hammer.

I see it all the time on well used tools.

Little to do with chrome quality when new from the factory. a LOT to due with care and use by the owner or users.

Not uncommon no matter the brand. Even Snap-On and truck tools.

:)

I finally got a Kennedy box! After a couple years of searching, I stumbled upon a garage sale and the guy was willing to get rid of it. He kept most of the junk that was in the box but let me keep the cutting bits and inserts, maybe someone here or at work can use them.
Paid 40 bucks, not a bad price. The box is in rough cosmetic shape but structurally solid. It's already on my bench and holding all my lock rekeying tools!

I overslept this morning, so I only had time to go to 2 scheduled stops and 1+ TOO. I HAD to be back in time to watch the World Cup.

The second stop was a bust, but the first yeilded some good stuff even though I was 1 1/2 hours late for the opening. There were a lot of machinists tools that were out of my price range but I was able to pick up a few things out of the $1-$2 boxes. (Pic 1). While I was squatting over the cheap boxes, I spotted the block grinder under a table. It was in great shape, and was only missing the quench tray and rubber feet. I know where to get those (under the bench in my shop) and the price was right so I didn't even haggle (out of character for me). (Pic 2)

The TOO+ was a yard sale, but the only tools left were 2 old electric motors that had been taken apart and missing the starter capacitors. BUT, it was across the street from one of my YS rivals. He waved me over to look at the tables he had set up in his driveway. He had a lot of interesting tools set out, but nothing I needed except a pair of small hammer handles. (pic 3)

I ended up spending $36 today.

Pic 1 - $5
Little Giant ladder stabilizer leg - $2 (I was the only one all morning who knew what it was)
1 1/2" heavy cast paddle/screw drill bit
General Tools #800 8oz brass plumb bob
Channellock #486 cutters (stamped "For Plastic Only")
Brown&Sharpe #650 thread gauge

Pic 2 - $30
Craftsman Commercial (Crown Logo) #397.19590 1/2hp 7" Block Grinder (Oct 20 1970)

Pic 3 - $1
2 thin hammer handles

You can sell carbide and get pretty good money out of it.

Couldn't pass this one up today, though I don't need it. Unusual, possibly user made - 22" wide, 12" high, and 9" deep - with one lift-out tray and a slot tray that lifts with the lid.
