Here's the Parker 956, it really is in awesome condition, I'm lucky to be able to add it to my collection. And I'm really thinking about painting it gloss red with white embossed letters. (yes I know, you did read that right!)

Works for me...

"Arrest-Me-Red" will work!!!

I'll give you one early---

Ya Dun Gud, Bubba!!!

CL find , Wilton 350 - guy was asking $200 for it. I drove about 25 miles to get to him, asked casually if he had any wiggle room on the price. Fully expected to pay $200, or maybe $180 if he was in a good mood...he came back with $130! Good shape - some of the finish is showing its age, but jaws are in very good shape and nobody has beat on it that I can see. Stand was obtained a while back from a friend and had been awaiting a suitable application...

Ahh nice, I almost bought that last weekend for $140 but picked up a 5197 instead. Plus I don't really have a need for another vise that small, however it was in great condition!

Nice. :) That's a York, unless I'm mistaken? Is the 100 4" or thereabouts?

Yes it is, that's how the pic was posted, knew right away it was a York, hopped in the car right away. I didn't measure it but that's sounds just about right. Should make a fun project. Will be using electrolysis method for the first time ever.

Found a nice write-up online:

The 100 on your York means 100 mm which is 3.937 or 3-15/16 real close to 4 inches. I have seen a 80mm, 100, 125 and a 150 that I have. I just fabricated a couple pairs of jaws for my vise and a pair for C. Braxmaier's which is the gold one. The jaws have the straight serrations like the old 3 to 4 inch Wilton's.

wandering around in Takayama, Japan and came across a blacksmith's shop. Looked like he had a couple more, but I just wanted to get a quick picture and keep walking....

Saw this ad for the bench in VT Craigslist. 1.75" thick, 9' long - $225. The vise is $30.00 if you buy the bench! Is that a YORK??

This must be Wiltons on a bench day...check this one out:

http://scranton.craigslist.org/tls/4484501908.html

Am I wrong or is that a Wilton Tradesman??

Va: there's another nice wee one from your collection. i think i'm liking the York vises more than the Wiltons.

by the way the thing under the Sampson vise you asked about earlier is a blacksmith table that might weigh about 1500 pounds. it would be a great addition to your property because you could get the 150 pounders and bigger off the ground and chained up on this sort of table. :D

Jaker: not sure the 22 you found is 1922 or just a # where the workers all put the #22 parts together to make one vise. in any case it's about that old and it sure cleaned up nicely.

Ritz: that Wilton has been used and maybe abused, but it found a good home now where somebody with some talent can give it some new life. by the way did you sell your Reed 404 you posted a week or so ago?

Andrew: Another beauty and is that one close to 150 pounds?

New addition. Got this one over the weekend. Will probably restore it aiming to get to the standard of some of those shown in this thread.

Parkinsons No.6.

When I got my Record 21 it was bolted to a Model 5 swivel base similar to this one---looks kinda funny with the tail of the vise hanging out there like that. Is that "normal" to mount a fixed base vise on a swivel like that???

Ok I am gonna ask a really silly question. Please forgive my ignorance.
This post on GJ got me wondering:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=253118http://

Are lead/main screws interchangeable between brands? As many know I have a broken Parker and the guy above has a broken Reed. Could the screw be swapped out and save him a repair that may or may not work?
There had been no answers to his post yet som by including it here I might get him a little more exposure with some very knowledgeable people.

There's a busted Reed 204 in St Clair Shores on CL, you could get it and compare. :p

alinc100, yes to your answer but you must know what thread type and thread Specification. Most Spindle thread sizes are in the 3/4, 7/8, 1 inch range and gets bigger on the 7" and larger vises. So if your vise has a spindle with a square thread measuring 7/8:6 (6 meaning the thread pitch, how many threads per inch) then finding a match will be easier.

As another note, the spindle threads are friction welded to the Handle body. I would love to see a video on this process but can not give any more information then that. I see the break on Mitchw123456 shaft is right where the weld heat effect zone is, maybe the shaft steel type was to brittle after the weld.

A 6" Yost is in the picture, at 118 pounds, on Ebay...

Most uncheap at $ 395.00/BIN...

But, he will take best offer...

Lol, that's been listed for awhile, I believe he started at a higher price. I don't currently own any Yost vises but 118 lbs seems very light especially with a swivel base compared to my other 6" vises.

I might pay $100 for it.. including shipping.

For reference, my Parker 956 that I just picked up weighs 142 lbs and it's a fixed base. I guess they just don't make things like they used to!

Wow, that vise swivels, pivots and rotates!

All it needs is a rear swivel jaw!

Also, did you ever get a chance to measure the Craftsman badge on your 5197? I'm trying to find a replacement and the length from end to end and the height would be mighty helpful.

Oh, I must have missed your question earlier. Sure thing, it's a 3" long badge and 1" tall. There's a guy on eBay who sells decals that he prints up, you can find him easily. Last time I checked he didn't have any 3" decals listed so I contacted him and he made me some at a reasonable price I thought. I'll need to contact him again because I have only one left out of the 8 I ordered.

KM------Here's a 60 York since the subject has been touched on.------7 lbs., 2 oz.-----2 and 3/8'' jaws.

Don't know how much smaller they made them, but this may be the notion behind the baby Wilton.

VA, wow, nice vise, so there is a 60mm York. Just picked up a York 80 3-5/32 wide jaws. Looks like red is their primary color. Thanks for the pictures.

Just out of curiosity, which fares better overall in the quality department; York or Wilton? I'm guessing the former has the edge.

I have not dissembled any yet except for the jaws but the vises seem very bulky and tight. The handles are small in diameter but I like how one end is bolted on at least on the 150. I have to many vises tore apart right now but will eventually get to these two I have and give a report.

Wilton Shop King, 4" Jaws. ~26 Lbs. Very nicely treated vise with zero issues. Satin Leaf on Cobalt Blue Metalic. Hardy was missing, fabricated from a bolt and two nuts just for something to have.

Here is the vise I picked up last week for $100.00. Well made vise, tight tolerances, 4.5" aluminum jaws, adjustable jaws, weighs 90 lbs. I like this one a lot and it will become my working vise in the shop. No idea who the maker is though. SAE threads, good quality. Only markings are the letters APVG 100. I painted it silver to match the original finish.

I HATE the handle. Any ideas on an easy way to add ball ends to this, and no I do not weld.

Joe, there is a member here that makes handles for GJ members, I think driveitsfar has used him. If you can not get help and you own a acetylene torch outfit then maybe I can help. I have been making handles for all my vises and do not like threading the knobs but like peening them on like most vise handles are made. I am making a handle for a Wilton 800 and it is a monster, 1-1/2 round handle and a 2 inch round knob. Wish I had a lathe.

I made a handle for this York. Any hack like me with a grinder, drill, file, and a little time can make one. I just found a picture of a York handle as the one a few posts back. The knobs are thin and similar to the ones Kevin posted. I took a hammer and peened the ends.

That is an interesting vise Joe. It looks very much like an old American vise, and it could be one of those that wis built for a store or company to re-brand. Just wondering if it could be European, the 100 could be the mm jaw witdth, but you say they are 4.5" which would be more 115, 100 mm would be 4". The other thing about it is the crimped handle ends, I have seen that on some Eoropean models.
