Just picked up this Wilton C1 today. I had bought a craftsman block grinder from this guy and he had a garage and sheds full of stuff. I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask what else he had so I mentioned vices. He had 3 Wilton bullets (1 baby) a couple rock island vices and some others that I didn't get to see. I tried to buy a couple but he only sold me this one.

I want to replace the aluminum jaws and I think these will fit:

I've looked for pipe jaws and found these replacements:

Here's a better option (in my opinion), a member here runs http://wiltonviseparts.net (KMScott) and he does outstanding work, I'd highly recommend using him for replacement jaws, as will many others I'm sure. His work is better than even what Wilton does. (once again, in my opinion)

lol, how much did they want? Did you snag any of the pictures? Sounds like the Parker 956 I picked up last weekend, the ad was taken down 36 min after posting! Gotta be quick!

He email me back in 30 minutes later, the add was down and the vise was gone. He wanted 250 and it had copper over jaws. It was the old non-flat lead handle end.

Sheesh are you correct! I bought a few Wilton 450's at an auction, then purchased swivel assemblies, swivel locks (from Kevin Scott) and new dust caps from etrailer.com. Then I stumbled upon a Wilton 3" bullet that was missing jaws - sourced from Kevin. This past week, I happened upon a Wilton C1 (4-1/2") that should be arriving in a week or so. At the least, I'll get to try my hand at the e-tank, but I'll be looking for another swivel assy. and more swivel clamps from KMS! I've gotta quit shopping!

I can vouch for the quality of Kevin's vise parts - superior quality to oem and Kevin is a great guy to deal with.

This is my second. At what point does it start being a collection? Or obsession? Or hoarding?! I'm on my second Craftsman block grinder as well. In my defense, I only have one Craftsman King Sealy drill press. Until I find another one...

I saw that posting, but when I saw it, it said posted 4 hrs. ago. And I though that was fast. That just shows you that the competition is pretty fierce for the bigger ones. They're catching the 6 and 8 inchers on first bounce.---I didn't see the 406, so I don't know what kind of shape it was in, but I paid A little bit over $300.00 for mine, shipping and all. Got it here from a Garage Journal member and tickled to get it. $250.00 was a good price if there was anything to it imo.-----It's the 408 that we are all looking for. 300 lbs. of swivel jaw. Crocodile Dundee would say, "NOW THAT'S A VISE". My money is on Demoman finding the first one. He's been chasing leads for years.

KMScott: i may not have mentioned it here yet, but i do love those weld fixes for the hack marks on your vise. great work and just an FYI. i started a Vise Repair 101 thread and put your weld pictures in it along with some information in a where you can buy parts for vises. if you could make a post with maybe some things you can add to make our vise fixes doable and also check the website address i gave you to make sure it's correct.

Finally mounted up my large prentiss, still needs some work, you can see that the top bar angles down in the back, probably from a hundred years of people using it as an anvil. The top bar not being straight makes the vise harder than normal to operate.

I put a 400N bullet next to it for size comparison.

When I went to pick up the C1 I meant to bring my camera but forgot - played 18 holes in the morning, then shopping for July 4th BBQ, cleaned the house then ran out to the boonies for the vice. My cell phone camera lens is scratched and just takes fuzzy pics. I did, however, ask the seller to take a few picks (which he did while I was there) and IM them to me. He hasn't yet so I'll ask him tomorrow then post them here. We put the C1 on top of the big vice for scale... Stay tuned.

by the way PM me if you need a golf swing tip because i used to try to hit 400 yard drives, hole 100 yard wedges and make all my 3 foot putts in a past life when that was my VISE.

Garrett: you don't post much, but when you do you sure post nice stuff. can you describe the issue with your screw a bit better or take it out of the vise if possible and take a few pictures of it and the hole from the bottom so maybe one of the guy's with the talent can help you. nice vise and how much does that old girl weigh?

I wonder, is it perhaps pressing down on the screw applying pressure there? Can you spread it open with a spacer, perhaps a bolt on each side of the screw towards the rear, and see if the action is better?

The static jaw of the vise has three separate openings cast into it, one for the top bar, one for the screw, and one for the bottom bar, so the top bar being bent downward pushes down on its opening, creating resistance I believe, Im thinking since it is a wrought bar that I can use some heat and spacers to get it straight again, any thoughts?

if that is an 8" grinder next to it on the table that vise is probably an 8 incher. i am guessing a hollands.

Picked up a couple of Wiltons from Drivesitfar and finished the first one, a 1980 C1 combination vise with 4.5" jaws. It needs a couple of parts which are coming, the horseshoe retainer clip is worn out and it needs the locking ring which goes under the base. So waiting on those. It needed some smoothing on the cast iron but overall it was pretty nice. Bought a new camera and still fighting to capture the green in verde green with outside shots. It's the hardest color to capture accurately I've run across. Nice to see DIF again even though we didn't have a lot of time.

The second vise is a 1750 Tradesman and I'm waiting for parts on it also.

Ha, not that *********. Plus, I don't have a 3 day weekend, I'm working 14 hour days today through Sunday. Vise hunting is postponed due to work until next weekend. Sad story I know... But I've also got some work on others that I need to finish up. I'm far too meticulous / OCD on some of these vises, gotta pick up the pace a bit. I've decided once I get home tonight I'm beating the hell out of the jaw pad on the Morgan 150 until it comes off or I break the jaw tower off. Fortunately I don't think that'll happen as the casting isn't hollow.

Yes, it's a quick release. And from what I read earlier it said that Parkinson was one of / the first to come up with the quick release mechanism. Hmm, I wonder if they made an 8" version??

not sure about the 8'' but it sure is a nice vise, i have seen one other vise with the same lever in the same location and it was a quick release.
that vise would be the conversation piece thats for sure

All: Anyone here know who restored this vise I now have in my Avitar? I've been looking at a lot of vises trying to find a match for my Wilton 606 SJ to try and solve the mystery as to who made it and this one popped up. it looks like maybe Getridaone's work or one of the other amazing members here or maybe this is from one of the other Forum's members. Anybody know who or know the color and brand name of the paint. also the shining steel is pretty nice which is an understatement and if i put a couple nice deburring wheels on my Baldor buffer would that maybe get me close if i tried to match it??

Balane: it was nice seeing you again to and sorry i had to run so we'll have to maybe do some vise swapping again in the near future. i don't think i made it back to my shop before you finished your magic on the Wilton C1.
you are amazing and in case you didn't take a before picture here it is for the other guys to see. also if you get a minute to rest while the paint is drying on a vise can you stop over at the new Vise Repair 101 thread i started and post a few of your ways to spiff up a vise from time to time and maybe a picture of one of your vises on the famous stump?

The paint on that vise is Flip Flop, aka Chameleon paint found at auto part stores. It was on every other car in the ghetto around here when it first got popular 10yrs ago.

I've also heard that referred to as Chromatic paint. And, agreed, I've seen it on all kinds of fart-can-imports the kids drive but not in a while, I think that fad ran its course. (This TVR is a serious car though.)

Balane and Nine: yes i agree a building or a car painted that color would be a bit much, but a small area like even a big vise i think looks pretty cool. not 100% on if that's the color of my mystery Wilton 606 SJ swivel jaw vise, but i know i want to try to make the bare steel shine like that. any help with that process please post here or on my Vise 101 repair thread.

ALL: I picked up my first C series Reed vises a few weeks ago and didn't have pictures so as i'm loading my Little Cabinet i'm taking pictures of some of my favorites i'm building stands and bench mounts for. here's my Reed 2C that is in pretty good original condition and i like the smooshed brass hub which will also get shined up. it might be close to twice the weight of the Wilton C1 that i just sold Balane.
