It's 4 1/2, but it's a beast. Gotta be pretty close to 100 pounds (better part of it anyway).
The columbian is a 503 1/2.

The twelve point program hasn't helped any other "vise junquies"...

Why should it help you...:lol_hitti

Maybe you'll have to get a chain soon...

Or a 600 pound cabinet...:rocker:

Too damn right you have a problem, if that's all you've bought within the space of one month. You should be ashamed of displaying such a lack of enthusiasm and effort at making unnecessary purchases. :D

Good find! Looks like the Craftsman 3.5" or 4" jaw width vises. Are both the same size? If so, it can be pretty handy to have one mounted on each end of a bench for long items.

Thanks oldldh and fretters I don't feel too bad for the unnecessary but damn cool purchases now.

When I unloaded the Hollands today my wife said what in the hell are you going to do with that.

Nice buy flying eyeball. Are they both American or Japanese?

My new (to me) Wilton 9-500. Five inch jaws that open to nine inches. Measuring tape in picture is opened to 12 inches to reflect scale. Date on key of dynamic jaw is worn, but note that "Chicago 14" is marked on the sides. My guess is this is an early 50s vise?

Nice find, I have an identical 9500. I think that "14" is a postal code (pre zip code) which came out in 1943. Mine is a 1954.

SDavis: looks like a great little (stown) vise. hope you like it as well as the other member will like the cabinet you sold me. i have no idea what i'll do with the thing you traded for the vise, but glad to hear you like the vise. it was a great day for a bike ride with your kids and hope that went well. maybe we'll meet again even though we don't live that close.

i did say to text or email me if you needed a bigger vise didn't I? Nice meeting you and glad to see you are a member of GJ.:thumbup:

Tclev: at the amount you are spending for those vises i wouldn't worry too much and in fact if you want to pack them up and ship them to me i'll pay the shipping and give you what you paid for them. nice finds all and you are starting quite a collection. I remember when Andrew was asking about buying his first US vise and i don't think that was that long ago. so you probably are best to be cautious and aware of the danger of hanging around GJ.

All: I found my first German vise and it isn't going to stay in the little cabinet very long. i have a nice 300 pound old Boeing steel 300 pound bench to mount it on after i do a proper spiffing up. anybody own one of these awesome Leinen F150 vices? now here's the good part the static jaw moves backwards and the dynamic stays in place like the Polish FPU vises. also it's 112 pounds and has 6 inch jaws which isn't too bad a size for any bench if you ask me. any and all information to pass on about this can also be put on a thread i started or on the Vise Repair thread if you have any tips to taking it apart and painting, shining steel and greasing it. thanks guys and gals

Worth is relative. Regardless of what you paid for it, the fact that you bought it makes it worth what you paid for it. :) There's only one person who has to be content with the price one pays, and it ain't the rest of us.

Very well said.

Well ... it was suggested that I take a look at this thread to understand a little bit about vises; and there sure are some great ones out there!
I have one which has been welded a long time ago; and I have used/and abused it for 35 years and it was used/and abused for at least 10 years before that. However I can't find any info on the company which made it; in fact I am not sure what the company name really is. I thought at first it was BRON, then maybe 6RON, then maybe GRON.
Any ideas?

It's supposed to be Eron, I think. Imported. It may have a casting defect or a blow with a hammer from the past can alter the letters. Look on page 889.

Was at the flea market yesterday and saw a 6-inch FPU in decent condition for $60. Didn't need another non-swivel vise, so passed on that one, but did get my first Parker---a 973 1/2 for $30. Very happy.

Well, little more movement on the Morgan 150 I'm working on. Welded nuts on the jaw screws, got all three out, however, same issue as the static jaw. Between the tight tolerances Morgan used and the rust I had to destroy the jaw to get it off. Oh well, already had to buy a new set. Also smoothed out some of the nicks / dings as well as the slide, how do you guys think it turned out?

This was just posted on Wichita CL, funky jaws on it, is it for sheet metal?

Sheet metal vise. That's a nice one! Look how long the slide is, I bet it weighs a ton for a 4.5" vise.

Edit: Simplex vises are highly underrated around here. My 4 3/4" weighs 75 lbs, my 5 3/4" combination weighs 165 lbs and my 6 1/4" weighs 155 lbs. They are awesome vises that can take a beating!

Oldie, did you bid on Balane's 5197 last night?

Freight was going to kill me...:willy_nil

But, I was going to bid at the 5 second point...the bid was at $122.50...I was prepared to go to $ 200.00, but then...:eyecrazy:

$300.00 and a microsecond later $305.00 popped up...

My bid would not have done the deed...

So, I resumed my search...

The 519X series of Craftsman vises are very popular, and fairly few on the ground, the 5197's pop up every so often, but the 5198 has never popped up...

If a 5198 ever shows up on Ebay, in the condition of Balane's 5197, I'm betting it would have a comma in the price...

I wonder who bought it???

Techncially I think they were designed for wood working, called coachmakers vises. I guess they could be used for sheet metal, but I don't think they were specifically designed for that. It wouldn't make much sense to have that much open capacity for a sheet metal vise IMHO. Yes I realize Yost calls them sheet metal vises today, but I think that is more of a marketing term than anything else :dunno:

OOOOH, just when I said I was done buying vises....I just got a call from a guy that saw my Craigslist ad who wants to sell me 6, count 'em, 6 Wilton bullet vises 2-6" jaw width, $500 for all of them. He needs cash for a truck restoration he's working on.

On my way to see him now, wish me luck! I'll post picks. He also has a 6" Starret with really tall jaws but he wants to keep that for himself.

Here's a reed I got for free. At some point in its life someone welded the swivel on it and welded the base to their bench. I ended up having to cut it off of the old bench and cleaned it up an just welded it to the bed of my truck. Works great for what I use it for and will easily outlast the bed of the truck.

Prentiss also made those "coachmaker" vises and i own one that's in pieces currently, but mine also has a swivel jaw that might not have ever been used in 80 or 90 years since it was new.

i agree they weren't made for sheetmetal work and maybe because those guys had the really big tools for that job. thanks for posting the catalog page Z and like the fact it had those big Reeds on it to raise Oldie's blood pressure again.

That page has been posted many times before, I saved it months ago. The 209 and 408 aren't a myth, just not many people needed a vise that size lol, I don't need them either, I want them!

The garage tidy up continues - found this. Again it was picked up at a boot fair for a £1.

Its a clamp on vice which is largely made of aluminim.

Not sure of the reason for this design. Its made by a company called Zyliss from Switzerland.

PM: that Zyliss vise you have there has seen better days, but looks like it might still work if you put the clamps on with the screws under the vise instead of on top and in the way. it was the first vise i owned for my house's work bench when i moved in 30 years ago.

i used it as my only vise for 20 years and still own it. i think it was about $200 at the local Home show and i still bring it out if i need to have a vise out in the yard because it can clamp on the side of my deck or even a 2 x 4.

you might be missing a few parts, but if not keep it and use when you need one outside away from your big vises.

Unless someone talks me out of it, I'm on my way to pick this up for $50. Any advice on what to look for? Seller is holding it for me.

http://southbend.craigslist.org/tls/4547120898.html

Not going to talk you out of it. At $50 that's a good deal. Just check for cracks along the slide or anywhere else and the feet, make sure the jaws meet flush and that the jaw goes in and out. Good luck!

Am I getting a really good deal at $50? The seller was asking $95, said he go $75 then accept $50 without hesitation. Makes me think I could have gone lower.

He listed it originally at $125, then changed it to $95. What I think or anyone else thinks is a good deal is irrelevant. You buy it because you want it, and if you're happy paying $50 for it then you got a great deal. I do however think you're getting a good deal on a heavy duty vise.

Biscuit: Wrench has a good (great) eye because he sees (and i do now) some tape maybe painted red under the static jaw on the side in the first and only picture of that. i would pull the tape off before buying and if that isn't an issue under there and no other cracks then you are getting a great deal for an old US vise. i thought at first there might be a crack under the vise's lip on the static jaw, but probably old paint and how would that get there.

every now and then people try to hide something and sometimes flagrant on Ebay and other sites, but for the most part just do the best you can and if it's a POS then you are only out $50 which is a tank of gas.

I'd buy it or at least try to buy it for more than the $50 if it showed up around here so your call.

cheers

I picked up 6 vises today. 5" Wilton bullet, 2-4" Wilton swivel bullet (?)one in excellent shape smooth jaws one in rougher shape, a Wilton swivel 3.5" with copper jaws, a 3" bullet fixed base in as new condition a small Dunlap exposed screw and my favorite, a vise anvil.

4 out of the five are exceptionally nice with light use. All are newer vises. Oldest I think isb1966. Paid a fair price for all.

OK, now I'm really, really done buying vises.

Actually Joe... You've just begun, the addiction only grows exponentially! Nice score! When are you mailing out that 1760 to me to fix?

Wanted to add, if you want to recoup some money I've been looking for one of those little tiny 3" bullets for my coffee table, so if you decide to sell one give me a heads up!
