I found this on Craigslist -

I already have a 13" and a 15" bench model, but really wanted a floor model. It's model 103.24820. The pics on CL were dark, in the back of a garage, and from about 10 feet away. I could still make out the handle to the vari-slo so I contacted the seller immediately.

The only damage I have found is what's on the table below. It works great, and seems to have had good care taken of it. The seller couldn't remember if his wife might have bought it new for him or if he got it used, but he said he owned it for years.

He threw in this crown logo motor, but wasn't sure of its condition. I'm guessing it's from a table saw. I rewired it and it runs, but needs new bearings. It is a 1hp motor, but is only about 5 1/2" in diameter.

Oh...

...I paid $125.

You may want to swap out that motor to a 1725 Pet, but either way, YOU ****!!

It has the correct motor on it already, it's stamped 9 55. I suppose that is the motors manufacture date. Not all of my Craftsman motors from that era have the date stamped on them.

The 1 hp crown logo motor was just one the seller had laying around and threw in.

Now that I have the floor model I'll probably sell my 15" bench model. It actually has a 1/2 hp long C motor on it.

The drill press is 103.23130 I believe. Would the long C motor have predated the press or were they still using this logo into the fifties?

My bad, was in a rush to catch up on threads so I could run across town and I misread. Total good score!!

Motors were considered accessories(purchased separately) usually and could be bought NOS long after the logo was changed. It may have been purchased the same day as the drill press, hard to tell with those.

No problem, I don't think I'm quite bad enough yet to put off chores so I can catch up on posts, but I can understand it.

Another question about the long C motor. I assumed the blue was painted on by an owner, but I've seen the long C logo with blue incorporated. So would the blue band be original?

The blue looks original, the wear seems the same overall compared to the wrinkle black on the end caps so I would bet that it is, again, hard to say for positive though.

I don't put off my chores to catch up on threads so-to-say, I just plan my chores around catching up on threads :lol_hitti

$125 with a Vari-slow! YOU ****!

Mine has the variable speed Craftsman motor (500-5000 RPM) which actually gives an even lower speed possible (175 RPM) than the Vari-slow (300 rpm).

However extended drilling at slow speed will pop the motor breaker!

Is it a period correct vs motor? If so I didn't know they made them back then. At least not for Craftsman home shop tools. I wouldn't mind a pic if it is original, sounds cool.

Vacationing out in Colorado this week for the event of my daughter's wedding. During a run to the grocery store today I spot an Estate Sale sign and this is the first day. Well I says the groceries can wait. After about a 5 mile trek up in the mountains near Conifer, Co I find the place. They had guns for sale but too high pieced. Found the workshop and garage with tools but only managed to find this handful of decent quality goodies amongst a lot of china and taiwan stuff. Some decent woodworking equipment but not my thing. I was hoping for a small or large vise but only one on a bench made in Taiwan for $60 :dunno: Unfortunately no vintage tool boxes either.
But I did score these for a total of $20.73
Stanley aluminum torpedo level, all 3 bubbles intact.
Craftsman 1/4 drive metric socket set. A bit of mix and match with a Husky breaker bar and extra SO 3/8 extension. I have an extra 1/4 drive ratchet at home that will fit this set.
A Leverage Tools, Model 10 Lever Wrench vise grip. Never seen one like it and had to have it.
A 7/16 Gear Wrench
CG Deluxe shears made in Italy
Claus Shears made in USA

I'd say the Long C Craftsman motor well predates the DP it is on. To bad you aren't closer, I'd be willing to trade.

I thought it might be older, but you know how they liked their logo crossover.

I have 2 or 3 other period correct Craftsman motors, so I wouldn't really need to trade to get the right one for the drill. Besides I, as I believe you do, really like the long C. I think the motor is all I have with it right now though.

CL ad today. Spent $150, passed on a few other things that just weren't the right price. Hoping for an e-mail back on them.

I believe you turn the knob to adjust to the nut you want to drive. Is it Craftsman? I might take it if you don't want it.

I wanted it because I have the DP for it. The early Atlas built craftsman. Long C all the way...

Shadow, That driver is a "universal fit" driver for machine screws and nuts. mostly numbered sizes (and would also work with metric in its range). The issue with those is clearance for its fat head.

I couldn't find an appropriate axe thread so I'll post here.

On my sunday (which is a tuesday because I work weekends and have to miss the garage sales), I like to poke around in junk stores for old tools. So I come across this hatchet axidentally which is pretty rusty and under the tape on the handle I can feel a big chunk of the handle has been knocked off.

My inner voice is saying " have you lost your marbles??? you already have at least 3 nice hatchets in this size and when are you going to use them??? save your money man..."

There is a stamp on it but I just can't make it out even after spitting on it and scraping it for a while. Even with all the defects I didn't want to put it down and it did have this nail puller built into the bottom back of the head:

I didn't like the way the eye for the head was constructed either, (3 holes instead of the regular eye) but the nail puller reminded me of picking up this hammer at the same place a few months earlier.
It had turned out to be a winner:

yeah, it was a cheney and the nail puller in the head had me scratching mine because the camp axe has a nail puller too, should I get it or not.
Finally the inner voice comes back and says "go for it, it's only $3 and this is the only entrainment you get these days".
So I bring it home and wire wheel some rust and after a web search I realize I wasn't losing my marbles, I was finding them:

Horse shoes or what?

Yes it is a Crown label Craftsman motor, same as the drill press. Do a search on here for "Craftsman Variable Speed Motor Drill" and you will find several posts on them..

Picked up a pair of wrenches today. I don't usually buy SAE stuff as I usually only work on European cars, but I figured I couldn't go wrong for a couple dollars for USA made steel. They are made by Vlchek. Sizes are 1 1/4 x2, 1 3/8, and 1 5/16.

I just left a post in the Tiny Tools thread.

repost -
While packing my truck to go mow a lawn tomorrow (5hrs each way, one day trip), I was dumping a bucket from the back of my truck to sort out some tangled ratchet straps. Out of the pile drops an odd bit of metal. It was a small vise with 1" jaws !

There are no marks on it, so I don't know who made it, and I don't remember when I picked it up. It could have been in the bottom of the bucket for at least 6 years !

Moral of the story - CLEAN OUT YOUR TRUCKS ! You might find a surprise at the bottom of the Cracker Jacks box. :lol_hitti

Jake: i agree with Nines that is a cool little vise.

did you make those custom display shelves for your little vises or do tell how you found them?

So a 5 hour drive to mow a lawn might be more like baling hay as often as I'd go that far even if i owned that home or is it your Mom's?

Drives - The plexi shelves were an estate sale find either late last year or early this year.

The 5hr drive is my first this year - so yeah, my mower is going to hate me. I have an acre (out of 5) to mow. I try to get up there once a month, but it never seems to happen.

All - Thanks, I think it's a nifty little vise as well. :D I can't believe I forgot I bought it, and then lost it in the back of my truck.

I hit an estate sale on my way home from Home Depot this morning. Couldn't get past the people and out to the garage and basement fast enough. Found a couple of things...

9220a1eee5df5cc3a45211ae7cb25387_zps76783077.jpg

Old Craftsman tool box with some odds and ends. $8

8899b6f7d6ec1f3346c377a2f2a551cd_zpsb3dd5fef.jpg

Couple old metal gallon oil containers-
Pry bar- $2
1/2" drive Snap On breaker bar, speed handle and and sockets 1/2"-13/16" $6:D

I saw the Littlestown vise on a bench in the basement with no price on it so I had to ask. $6 but it was bolted to the bench. So I used the Snap On tools I was also purchasing and removed it.

Pretty nice stop.

Almost forgot. A weed eater for a dollar. Runs good but the guy says after 15 or 20 minutes it just dies. Im thinking coil stops working when it gets really hot. I have a few spares to test it with.

Two stops this morning. I'll start with the second stop which is the plates on the left and everything under it. Plates were $5/ each, and I went digging through a box of sockets. Handed the guy my pile and asked how he prices things. 'Oh, a dollar each for Craftsman and whatever you offer for the knockoffs. How about $5 for the pile?'. Top is Snap-On, middle is SK, next is Blackhawk, and the very bottom are Proto and a Cornwell. Wrench is a MAC and an Armstrong. I'll have to go back the next time he has his sale and see what other knock offs he has...

The stuff on the right is the other sale. Made it there when it opened (guy got there five minutes late) and dug through a couple of cardboard boxes of stuff. Everything ran $15. Obstruction wrench is a KD, the stuff in the top right is Snap-On, the bits are in a MAC box (no driver). Top row of wrenches, L to R, are SK (including some SK Wayne marked ones), Craftsman, Billings, Easco. Bottom row, L to R, are Plvmb, Proto, Cornwell, Thorsen, Blackhawk, and a Barcalo. The stop of the far right (punch, ratchet wrench, DBE) is all PowrKraft. Guy had a kick *** looking PowrKraft 1/2 ratchet with quick release and a thumbwheel on the back, but I couldn't get him to sell it (he needed it take the swingset apart in the back yard). I can't really find any pictures of that style online, probably wasn't worth a whole bunch, but it was cool looking.
