All but middle bottom and left machinist are original silver/ red and while those 2 where wrinkle brown. I repainted those to match.I still have to repaint the top chest and small carry I got while others need locks installed and badges done.

Very nice, I really like that setup in the middle, that bottom box looks extra beefy. I'd like to find one of the 12 drawer bottom boxes with that paint scheme.

Yeah I found that on CL its the same drawer size box the "cabinet" is wider at 29 and taller at 30. I reached alittle and found those where made in 80's in wrinkle brown

This thread is costing me money! :D

While waiting for my vintage Matco/Snap-on set to arrive (my BIL picked it up in another town and I should have it tomorrow), here's the boxes that helped hook me on this thread. This is my (deceased) grandpa's Huot roller and top, handed down to me a few years ago. It's doubly-sentimental to me because my dad bought it for him. Dad recalls that being in the early 70's. It was so filthy that my first thought had been to refinish it, but once I got it clean, I found I liked the patina, and lots of its paint is still in great shape. There's almost no dent damage. The roller's cover is near mint (that dark area is just my reflection) because grandpa left in the open position all the time. Unfortunately, the most amount of paint loss and surface rust is inside the bottom of the roller, and on the face and underside of that lowest drawer. But as bad as some of that looks, it's all surface damage - there's no rust-through anywhere. There's no loss of integrity on the bottom of the roller, where the wheels bear the weight. I've just given it a thorough cleaning, waxing, lube the slides (all in great shape), new drawer liner, and put it back to work in my garage. Evaporust and 0000 steel wool removed the red rash from the side handles. Someday it might get a repaint before I pass it on to a son or grandson, but for now the 'patina look' has grown on me (oh, that's a slippery slope). It may get a few more stickers before I'm through - Pistol Pete needs some companionship.

And here we go down the slippery slope. CL find a few days ago - this Craftsman machinist's chest is very straight, with almost no paint loss. I plan to simply clean, lube slides, replace felt, and put it back to work.

I think there's a spring-loaded catch of some kind that holds the front cover in place, even when the top is not closed (see photo with small hollow cavity that sits in the top-center edge of the front cover, and compare to last photo on post #2632). When the top is closed, two pins are pushed into the top edge of the front cover, locking it in place. Beyond that missing catch and not having a key, the box is complete.

Anyone have any special tips on cleaning these crinkle-paint finishes? I don't want to damage the paint by using anything too aggressive. The inside paint is great, but there's some staining on the top and on the front cover that I'm hoping to have some effect on it with some simple cleaning.

Bill, there should be a spring and detent ball like found on a ratchet or extension in that center hole of the door on the Craftsman box. Good job cleaning up that Huot and welcome to the Slippery slide! :willy_nil

Thanks, Nine. My family thinks I'm half crazy, so I figure I'm on the right path. :lol_hitti

I'm confident I can fabricate something for that door.

Bill, Kennedy used to recommend WD-40 for cleaning the paint. Mild solvent and easy to get/cleanup. For tough gunk, back it up with a stiff toothbrush.

All,
I restored this 10 Drawer Craftsman top box a couple of months ago and I am on a mission to find the matching bottom. Wanted to know if anyone has the ad from when this box was sold or any pics of the variations that would be a match to it. I know I have seen the pics on here before....I am just having a heck of a time finding them again! Thanks as always for any help!!

Here is my top Box.

DWise has a bottom in post 2830, on the previous page. The only exception is the later Crown Top badge but they made the same style with that Heritage badge. They also have one with drawers in the bottom instead of the big open hole.
I believe Outlaw has a few that style as well.

GREAT JOB!!!

Ok, I have seen a couple of that bottom one with the empty bottom section, there are some versions though that only have two horizontal lines on the drawer pulls as compared to the decorative design. that too makes it even that much more difficult to find. I am being picky, but I would like to keep it as authentic as possible outside of the new paint!!The ones I have seen unfortunately have been located too far to make it cost effective to have shipped. Sometimes it ***** being in South Texas!! I am curious to see what the drawer configuration is of the one without the empty bottom section.

Is this the bottom you are looking for? The image is from the 1955 Craftsman catalog.

I have the matching bottom AND the little brother to this one as I sold the 10-drawer a couple months back... In case you're interested.. NO keys unfortunately this time, and very little cosmetic issues with light surface rust. Pictures show it "as-found" with no cleaning done yet.. Will do in the next week before I list both pieces on "that site"..

Oooh… Some great Craftsman Rem-Line boxes today!

I would love to find a minty top box like JBMorrey's and a roller cab like the bottom one in DWise's advertisement with the drawers all the way down. That would be a pretty smokin' looking Craftsman stack next to my Power-Kraft version of that stack.

Still can't decide if I'm happy or aggravated that I found this thread. :rocker:

The latest find: an early 80's Matco MB316 with an MB210 upper, with a KRA-429B keeping the peace. Needs a thorough scrubbing and drawer lube, and then it will join my garage. I'm leaving the stickers because 1) they're cool and 2) it would just leave paint fade shadows if I removed them.

I'm going to look at a Union and a Craftsman on Friday. Nine, Outlaw, and taumac, I'm holding you responsible for this! :bounce:

Bill: looks like you did great. some day you'll have more tools than tool boxes if you remain a member of GJ so good thing you are planning ahead and getting the boxes first. by the way nice find on those and maybe you should pull out the middle box and put it on your bench so you'll have the matching ones on top of each other.

then you'll have room for a top box on top of the mid box for your bench so you can buy another toolbox.:bounce:

has anyone done a post on restoring an old toolbox? Was wondering how you go about doing it. Sandblast then paint? Drill out rivets and replace with new ones so the hardware can be replaced?

Nice setup. Out of curosity mind sharing what it set you back? That is a great assortment of vintage boxes. Are you positive on the MB210 top box model number? What are the dimensions? I think I have the same box, but it is a MB310 IIRC. They are super heavy boxes for a 26"x12" box. I like the one center drawer pulls much better than the two individual ones.
