C.H.I Garage doors - any feedback?

I'm ready to replace my old 16' garage door and am looking at the C.H.I. model 3295.

This one is an aluminum rail-frame door, with glass panels (very similar to the ones that LLWillysFan used in the Concrete Underground - shamelessly copied the idea from him...). It's really an attractive door and I think it'll look great with the cedar siding.

Anybody have any experience with this brand, good or otherwise?

Appreciate the input!

Mike

I have C.H.I. doors (one 18' x 8' and the other a 9' x 8'.) Both are insulated without windows. They have been in since 2008 and I have been extremely happy with them. Recently had another brand installed by Overhead Door in a new pole barn/garage and the door looks nice but it doesn't seem to be as well built even though they are supposed to be comparable. Time will tell but at this point I wished I had asked my builder to use my previous installer and gone with the C.H.I. if for no other reason than I have been so happy with them.

Maynard9089,

Just the kind of info I was looking for about C.H.I.

Trying to do my research before I commit.

Thanks very much.

I love the CHI doors. Twice the price of an insulated rollup door but about 5 times the steel. Very good Quality and they appear to be much better constructed than the comparable Overhead Door products we use at work.

600SL,

Sounds like you're sold on them.

You're making my decision easier!

Thanks.

Had a 16 x 11 and a 10 x 10 installed about a year ago in a pole barn for at my Son's
place. Had never heard of them before and was using a new company for the installation.
Went to their website and they looked good. They have been good, seemed heavier than
some doors and the hardware package seemed above average.

I have the carriage house style doors too. Steel on both sides with insulation in the middle. About 7 years old and the factory white "primer" is still in great shape. In my judgement much higher quality than amarr and clopay. The kids are rough with them and they don't dent easily, and when there's a nick the wood grain look does a good job of hiding it.

BUT... watch your installer! Mine cut off the ground prong from the automatic opener b/c there wasn't a 3-prong outlet nearby, and he didn't secure the wiring enough so now I have to redo it. Not a big deal but I should have had it fixed back then.

Only other thing I serviced was the rubber strip at the bottom, the original was low quality. I'm not sure if that was CHI or just a standard weather strip. Ordered a replacement from North Shore Commercial Door.

Great feedback, everyone.

I'd never heard of them before, but based on your experience with CHI it sounds like it would be a solid choice.

Going with the dark bronze powder coat finish and the samples of available glass types look like the frosted would give a bit more privacy than the tinted.

Again, thanks!

i just had a quote for a CHI 9'x7' door installed.
$949 for the 5916 model
$175 top section thermo glass
$90 for hi-lift tracking
$560 lift-master model 8500
Total installed is $1834 plus $238.42 is a grand total of $2072.42

I am in Canada so price is always higher but the doors seem to have good reviews.

How much more is powder coating than anodizing?

My local supplier uses this brand for glass doors. They've installed them in several bars, restaurants, shops, etc. I've checked some of them out in person and they seem to seal up well for a sectional door and are pretty quiet on windy days.

Also, consider using vinyl window film instead of going with frosted glass. We did this with some glass interior doors in our home and are glad we did.
