Saved this number 8 record vice (vise) from the trash. Perfect working condition, cleaned it up with some sea foam but would be better with new jaws and a fresh coat of paint.
This thing is a monster! I've never seen record vices (vises) before but it seems very well made. Best part..... FREE!

Nice score. I've admired Record machinists vices ever since I learned about them here at the GJ. And you can't beat free!
I've got a Record woodworking vise I bought when I was a bachelor in the 1990's that's probably one of the best tools I ever bought. As far as I know Record is no longer in business.

Record is still in business, but they were bought out by Irwin (?) I think. Or maybe it was Ideal ?

Well I guess you **** is what people on this forum say when you do something so extraordinary that they can't stand your success! In that case, I concur. Good going!

Wow, suckage indeed.

Record's are great vises, but in the big sizes, they do not have the weight of the US made vises from back in the day. I have a 6" Record (very common in my area) with swivel base (much less common). and it weighs about 80-85 lbs. If my memory serves me right, an 8" stationary is right around 100 lbs and an 8" swivel is about 130-135. (Reed 4C (6") = 190lbs).

Don't misunderstand, I still like Record's very much, they are pretty close to indestructable, and am actively looking for an 8", they just lack the heft.

You sure on that weight on the 6"? I have a 6" Paramo (Record clone) with swivel, and its 100 lbs.

I cannot imagine a non-Asian made 8" vise @ only 100 lbs

The older and newer styles probably had quite a notable difference in weight. It wouldn't surprise me with the latter day Record and Irwin/Record gear if there was quite a bit less beef.

This may help with the weights, from an old catalogue I had.
lilredex - Great stuff. Thanks!

I was about to post in this thread by providing the weights for the Record vices that I have. I weighed and recorded mine some time ago on a set of bathroom scales I keep in my garage. I have Nos. 1, 3, 4, 6 & 8. None of them have a swivel base. All but the No. 8 match what is on the chart you provided. My No. 8 weighs 82 lbs. (not 84 lbs. as per the chart). I'll write that off to the couple of gouges that are in it!

Along with Canadian Tire's house brand (Mastercraft), Records are easily found in my parts, but 8" not so often. About a month ago there was one for sale, $85. I called, but it was sold already. If it wasn't, it would have been a 4 hour round trip when I saw the add at 9:00 pm on a Sunday evening; I would have been in the car in a heartbeat.

It's crazy that an 8" is 100 lbs or less, but over the years I have seen 100's of Records in garages and shops, can't recall seeing a broken one. They are well made & tough vises (not too crazy about the throat depth). If I could have snagged that 8", it would have been awesome for $85.

Matt, to get one for free in a scrap pile, that is beyond awesome, you definitely ****!

So assuming the Record and Paramo are about on a par, the swivel base on my 6" is about 30 lbs? I know it's massive, but man...

Hard to believe an 8" is only 14 more lbs...

Thanks for the replies.

I have an old crappy vise that is for beating on. I plan on setting this thing up on a new workbench and using the hell out of it. If it's not abused (cheater pipes) then i think I may very well get many many years out of it. One person can lift it but it is much easier to carry with two people.
