An artist I know is working on a painting of Tall Man from the movie Phantasm. I've never seen the movie but after a Google search it looks like a creepy tall guy has flying spheres that do bad things to people. He asked if I could make a sphere that he could incorporate in the painting. Sure, I'll try anything once.

Creepy guy.

Trouble making sphere.

The sphere will have a small gearmotor in it and will appear to "float" in the paintings hand.

Started with a soup ladle, after a little trimming it makes a perfect sphere half.

Sphere setup in mill for the spike deployment slots.

Pre-polished some 16ga ss then spot welded the two pieces together. Band-sawed the spikes.

Beginning brackets for the gearmotor.

One nearly completed murder sphere.

I'll post a picture when it's done. My friend does amazing work so I'm sure it will turn out pretty neat.

Wicked looking....

It was a good movie and those spheres could really ruin your day.

I'll never eat steak fingers again.

I was looking online about the spheres. It looks like yours may be a little bit small, although if it is going to go into a painting it wouldn't really matter. All the artist would have to do is pull it closer to him for enlargement.

It's been quite a long time since I watched the movie. It was a good movie for it's time.

Are you going to have retractable blades and screw? And if so, how are you going to power it so the blades come out and retract? I know you said that you will have motor, but will the actual motor reverse, or will it be on a cam action with a stop?

Kevin, I just made it the size that he requested, so not sure how the final painting will appear. The gearmotor has an eccentric wheel that will be attached to painting. Believe its around 10rpm. The idea is to give the appearance of the sphere floating in tall guys hand.

In the movie, the sphere would have those blades come out and chase people until it would imbed them in the victims fore head. At which point a 1/2 inch looking drill bit would drill a hole and pump out blood all over.:)
