I've bought a decent amount of tools at Goodwill over the years. Not a hand tool, but recently I got a Craftsman sabre saw for something like $8.

Not where I live, these types of places here seem to think the stuff that was donated to them is made of gold. Same goes for pawn shops, and 2nd hand stores.

Seems to be the same issue here. I don't see any tools at GW but the other thrift stores price them to where I'm not interested in even looking.

Bought a couple of excellent file cabinets, old school with heavy duty sliders and deep boxes at our local Abilities Unlimited store. $10 per drawer. Never seen a real "tool" at any of the charity outlets; AU, GW, or SA. Suspect any they get are set aside during processing for use in store "maintenance."

Been in the stores several times - zip around here. Great place to find a VHS VCR and maybe a computer that would run XP.

I am in the shipping business. I am the 3rd party shipper for the local Denver CO
SHOPGOODWILL auction site. I ship for their customers that just have to have that
YOU NAME IT. Many items SHOPGOODWILL will not ship because they are too big or
fragile.
Go to www.shopgoodwill.com click on search. They list different stores in the US.
Find TOOLS on their list and see what they have in the way of tools.
Read the fine print.

Similar to Goodwill, check to see if there is a Habitat for Humanity ReStore in your area. It's their retail outlet that sells donated items to fund HH builds.

You can sometimes find good stuff.

I've never seen tools there (maybe some older power tools sans batteries though), honestly I try to avoid goodwill because the price of stuff is predatory in my opinion. Lot's of cheaper places to buy used stuff (savers and salvation army are other stores we have); savers is pretty good for modification or gut type stuff, old electronics as well.

i've never seen a tool at goodwill, or salvation army locations around here, or anyplace else i've been.

local habitat for humanity/restore is hit & miss, rusted junk chicom, or brand new in the package, and never much of either.

i did find some new taps, dies, ($2 ea) & dewalt wire cup brushes ($7 ea)

i bought one of each size they had on the taps & dies, and some spares for most used sizes.

i have better luck on hand tools from a local "junk" flea mkt, and hitting all the local pawn shops about once a month.

To think the prices these goodwill stores put on the stuff they get for free, pretty pathetic.

One of the local goodwills I went to today of course no money to do anything with, they have 2 older Coleman camp stoves that burn regular fuel not the propane bottled stuff. They also have a 3 burner with same fuel setup. They want $15 for the 2 small ones, and $25 for the 3 burner. Never fails when I'm broke they have stuff that might be somewhat useful :(.

Goodwill here has a black hole in the back that tools go in. Rarely some POS worse than HF junk makes it to the floor. Screwdrivers for $2.99 each when the whole set did not cost that much.

On the rare occasion they get power tools in they price them higher than solid gold.

Now at the ReStore I have found some good tool deals on hand tools. Most of the stuff is a buck each or less no matter the brand. Got some small Snap On wrenches there for .50c each last time.

The town I live in, as well as a few other towns have "Idaho Youth Ranch" stores, which are non-profit stores that accept donated items which the stores sale and help provide assistance for kids who have been abandoned or who have lost their parents.

Anyhow, its not really a tool, but I consider it to be a pretty good score this morning.

As others have said: Cheap overpriced junk if I find anything at all. Good for anyone that finds anything decent there.

Goodwill seems to vary greatly by location. My wife got into going to ours last fall. She goes nearly every Sunday, when a lot of clothes are $1 and other stuff is 59-70% off. Our Goodwill gets a TON of new stuff from Target. Toys, household goods, and clothes. I think my wife got a whole brand new summer wardrobe for like $16 this spring. My kids get a lot of toys there. Nothing like getting a $60 Batman playset for $1.99. It's great because when we are done with things I feel no remorse about donating them back. When you pay big for kid stuff then you feel like you need to try and get something back out of it. And selling *****. Donating is easy.

That said, we stopped in one in a little more well-to-do town and found nothing new, and prices that were double or triple those at our store.

I picked up a portable air tank for $10, but I don't really go looking for tools. I get all my yard work/garage clothes there, when they wear out I give them to the dogs to tear up and grab some more. Every now and then I'll come across an interesting or cool T shirt and save it to wear around the house.

If you need a hair dryer (for shrink tubing or to dry/heat parts before spray painting, remote for a cheap TV, a VCR for the garage, laptop/duffel bag or backpack, they're the place to go for cheap stuff.

My garage stereo and speakers came from Goodwill, the thing rocks for $20.

Nope. Never found a single tool at my local Goodwill. I see some old unopened fuel filters for like small cars or lawnmowers though. Maybe an unopened wiperblade or two. Nothing worth the $5 they want.

What happens to tools that get donated to GW? I'm sure there are tons of them that get donated everyday.

I've never seen a tool at a store.

Do they turn them all in for metal scrap??

Cleveland. We rock.
A lot of stuff never makes it out for whatever reason you can think of, including theft, saved for friends etc, and I know for a fact my local goodwills pull out all hardbound old books and sell them to a book wholesaler :grr: so maybe they have a setup like that.
