That looks like a beautiful vise and I think you did great. Nothing at all wrong with a 3.5" vise. A good one, like yours, can do a lot. The jaws look brand new.

Here is my collection of Vices (Yes i am british) Record No.3 x2, No.4 , No.6 , Paramo No.1 and a Nippy Drill Press Vice!
Note i have repainted them all apart from the Nippy Drill Press Vice and the No.4 Vice Which retains its original colour.

Can anyone tell me the value of the Nippy Drill Press Vice, I know its fairly rare and i have only ever seen another one at my old high school!

Agreed, but I would have to swap out that handle. The squashed ends would bug me every time I used it.

I wonder if anyone has seen a screw retaining collar like the one on this vise. It has all traits of a Parker but it is unmarked. It has a countersunk screw on top to hold it on. I just never saw one like this and thought it is interesting.
I stumbled across some pictures of a Howard Iron Works vise and it has the same features as the one pictured. It sure does resemble a Parker of that period.

I had one that looked extremely similar to that, especially the bench clamp nut/handle, and the one I had was also free of any cast or stamped in information. It was completely blank in that regard. After some research I finally identified mine as a Morgan. However, the steel jaw inserts on yours are a dead give away of Parker's involvement.

I just thought of your new Parker with no markings, I always think of Prentiss when there are no markings . The bench clamp nut/handle is exactly the same as my Parker EE. It is on E Bay and not in my basement

Hard to tell from the photo but it looks like it may have the little tensioner plunger/screw in the center of the spindle. That's a Parker indication as well.
By the way, my new Parker has full manufacturer information cast into one side, just no model number or date stamp.

That is a real interesting looking vise. I do not know what purpose it is for, but looks specific to a certain trade or job. Very large surface jaws and to have so many thin walled areas, it has to be forged or cast steel...something strong enough to hold it together..
I hope someone recognizes it as I am very curious.

Nice find. I sold a like-new Yost 32c a couple months ago. It seemed like a pretty solid vise.

I seem to remember someone mentioning that specific vice a few weeks ago. Think they said it had come from a telephone/telecom exchange workshop, or something along those lines.

Yes. I picked it up about a week ago in Oregon. There was a show my dad was attending and he noticed it then gave me a call. I would of hoped for a better price but i had to have it. Now i just need to convince my wallet to not call the police and press abuse charges

I've seen engine manufacturers duplicate large displacement cylinder blocks via fabrication & welding. Its a classic struggle, all the work/labor that goes into the fabrication, welding, machining (and extra metal to make it plenty strong) vs. the cost of block casting tooling for lower cost mass production, which can get into the $M really quick. The last fab block I saw was at Ingersoll in Rockford maybe 10 years ago +/-. No surprise to me that someone did this for a vise.
Not sure if its a one-off or mass production. Any indication of either on this sample?

Columbian made some welded/fabricated vises out of steel plate way back when. I don't know if Colombian manufactured that vise because it's not the same as the designs I've seen. The red color is the same though not that that necessarily means much.

A company called Lotus, I think, made plate steel vises. I can't really remember much about them but may have been similar.

Just scored a Athol 614 1/2 for $40 and was in the process of bolting it onto a post. I had it clamped down temporally while I was in the other room but the clamp failed and then there was a loud thud in the shop. I was walking around wondering what it was and the see my vise on the floor with the handle snapped off.
Oh well.
Not sure what I'll do with it. I can braze it but it will never be the same, I can look for another screw, donate the other parts to someone in need or use the rest as a boat anchor or a door stop.

Yeah I was thinking the same but the 70lb vise fell three feet onto a concrete floor. I was three rooms away (40') and could still feel the thump on the cement slab. Either it was already cracked or it fell directly on the handle. I'm actually glad it was just the vise, by the sound of it I was really worried it was something much bigger and pricier.
I'll go to the Vise part trading thread and see if anything comes up. This is my third Athol 614 in my life so it's not a huge deal to me but still *****.

Personally, I'd drill and tap both pieces then fix/screw together with a length of threaded rod. Add some braze to finish it off, and I doubt you'll ever have that fail on you.

That is a cool vise and I'd certainly add it to the pile at the right price, but I disagree on its strength.
When tightened the static jaw gets a ton of pressure back and this creates strain on the leading edge nearest the dynamic jaw. Not a lot of weld at this stress point.
there is corresponding pressure DOWN on the lower front edge which is why cast vises have a support self down under the Dynamic jaw. (see sketch below) on this vise it's a flat plate. makes for a low profile but it will bend downwards...
For average day to day use, probably no issues, but If you really have to haul on it...

You're going to like dealing with the seller - he's a heck of a nice person. I've purchased several tools from him, including two vises. Make sure he shows you all that is in his garage - he has a lot!

You are absolutely correct!
I'm not feeling so bad since I also scored two Wilton Bullets (350s) for $20 each this week, so that takes the sting out of my stupid blunder but since I already have them in my possession I better look for another vise to replace the Athol.
Plus, if I can't find a replacement spindle I'm happy to part out the vise to whoever needs parts, I've been on the receiving end so I'm happy to help out.

We shall see I guess, if it comes down to it and I find some glaring weaknesses, I'm no stranger to metal fabrication... A few strategically placed pieces of steel plate will make their way onto it if needed
As far as heavier duty stuff, I have a Wilton 1760 I am 99% done restoring that will have me covered. I'm holding off posting pics in here until I'm 100% done

Good man, that's the GJ spirit! In full disclosure though, I must say that I have denied giving a vise part to a guy once before, because he would continuously (5+ pm's a day) bug me about sending the part to him, and he was a new member and rude. But other than that lol.

By far and away, I've obtained my best tools and deals this way. I would go to buy a $10 part or tool I needed and end up driving away with my car fully loaded busting at the seams. Did this quite a few times.
Other tip: Put all things you may want buy in a pile and at the end of hunting ask him how much for everything.
