There are some excellent vises showing up these last couple of days.

Mtnwalker,

I said it before and I'll say it again: You **** and you restored that vise perfectly, I would love to have that vise; it's beautifully finished. Well done!

I always like having the side walls of the jaws unpainted just the way you did it.

Balane, Macgee: I concur,

Mtnwalker.. That is a mighty vise in proud to display condition!

Cheers..

Dan,

Welcome and those are some very respectable vises, all three of those are some of my favorites. I have a clean smaller Monarch (3.5") and love it but your Athol is super cool and since I am watch collector/trader I would dig having that Parker, actually I would be quite happy using that parker daily so it you want to get rid of it, I'll gladly take it off your hands (Joking, but no really) ;)

I have no idea but one thing I have learned the hard way is to try not to buy a vise without testing it. It's so hard finding problems with a vise online, while a picture can tell a thousand words they are still spots and problems that can not be seen/told by a pic.

If you see a big Chas Parker vise for sale for $50 it's either because the seller has no idea which means they won't be able to tell you if it has bad backlash or that the jaws don't line up evenly or close perfectly flush against each other or that the jaws are cracked and the jaw bolts are stripped or worse tig welded in place or if there's a crack on the backside on the slider or if the fixed nut for the spindle is cracked or worn out.............etc.

If the seller is knowledgeable then I doubt he would sell a flawless 100 lb Chas Parker with a rotating static jaw for $50 without it having problems unless he's GJ member.

All these possibilities above make the vise far from desirable and difficult to know while buying online unless he's GJ member.

Having said that the vise looks good, from the only pic (one side shot) I don't see any cracks or flaws, if the rotating jaw is in good shape and has the locking pin that's a plus and the jaws seem to line up and closed flush, that's always good. If there's nothing wrong with it, then yes after shipping it still probably a good buy (albeit: if there's nothing wrong with it).

I would rather buy online from a GJ member, D Ravizza are you reading this? I want your Chas Parker, take pity on me I just broke my vise :)

Cheers

Macgee,

Good advice for the buying of hardware via our internet happy world! Vises are so typically misused, and not everyone appreciates nor understands that.. Your words of advice remind me to be vigilant and that is truly appreciated.

Mtnwkr: nice find and restore on the Holland Yost. for a smaller vise it really has some heft to it.

so now that you have 2 vises on your bench are you done looking for a vise? :lol_hitti

Flying: an 8 inch Craftsman always gets my attention even if that is measured for a jaw opening which this one isn't. I emailed the owner yesterday even when his asking price was $165 asking for a few more pictures and he posted the side shot you posted. not sure if Japan or Taiwan origins, but i might be wrong on both accounts because it does look older. it also looks like it should have a swivel base. on my advise he lowered the price closer to what i thought the value was so it might be sold now. or did you buy it so you can post up a picture of the other side, bottom and tell us what is says under the Craftsman sticker.

MacGee: i'm guessing you won't clamp another big vise or make sure it is going to stay in place before leaving the room. all sounds good if Kevin's spare one might be a replacement especially if yours might have had a crack on it in the first place. i'm guessing you like a certain Parker vise, but not sure where i got that idea.

VA: you know we won't just take your word that there are more vises with that jaw design so post up some pictures so we can enjoy some more of your vise ****. nice research by the way.

Flav: 90 minute drive for a clean Parker vise with the swivel wrench included doesn't seem like a bad deal to me. i'd be interested for under $100 and only $30 in gas even though it doesn't look very big because it does look clean. you might want to see if you can get pictures from the other side or any pictures you can and also find another reason to head that direction like to buy another tool or something for your shop.

Ok Drivesit, if seeing is believing, here's your pics.

1.----Adams Co.

2.----Precision Built Streamliner

3.----RB

And here's a bonus.

Samson was made for Sears and the Jr. was probably made by Littlestown which we've already mentioned, so I don't know if you can count the Jr..
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flying Eyeball.-----There are two eight inch Craftsman's on pages 329, and 330, respectively.
Gatewaysysop has restored the one on page 330, and it is a beauty. It does have a swivel bottom.
They resemble a Columbian a whole lot.---By now I hope it is in your possession. 80 bucks is a good buy for an 8 incher, anything below that is gravy.

I haven't posted in a while but just picked up a $45 Reed NO.32 4 1/4 jaws I believe and weighs around 72 pounds. Here is the picture from the CL ad I'll get some more later after bowling. The vise is in great shape the handle is even straight as an arrow.

Another day,another sale,another vise.
Today an estate sale opens at 5;00,it's not out of my way home from work. Pics are blurry but there are tools in the garage.
So being first I found this:
010 (Large).jpg

011 (Large).jpg

012 (Large).jpg

013 (Large).jpg

014 (Large).jpg

015 (Large).jpg

The jaws move well, cannot find a date stamp on the slide/keyway.
Have not tried the swivel action nuts. I believe I will disassemble and give it an e-bath before much else of anything. I paid the tagged price of $15.

What type of wire wheel do you use, that looks terrific. Do you use a drill with a wire wheel ? How did you make that vise look so good? I know it was elbow grease, but whats your procedure and what type of wire wheel did you use?

My vise collection is now complete. The final addition just arrived today (at least that's what I told my wife;)) I've been looking for a Parker 94 ever since I first saw pix of one here two years ago, and this is only the second I've seen for sale. I got it on fleaBay for $75 - probably overpaid since I was the only bidder. Oh, well, it was worth it to me. It needs a lot of love, but is good and solid, no wear on the leadscrew. Both handles are bent, but not too much to straighten easily. I can hardly wait to see what's under those copper jaws, but the screws wouldn't yield to a plain ol' screwdriver. I'll hit them with Kroil and try again in a day or two. I'd planned on a full-bore restoration, but now that I see it in person, many of the hammer marks may be too deep to grind out completely. I may have to settle for wire brush and e-tank with a light sanding for resurfacing. We'll see how it goes.
I'm pretty well set on painting it the original blue. Anyone know what's the best rattle can match? There may not be enough original paint on this puppy to go by.

Oops, I forgot about the PrecisionBilt Streamliner, pictured just a few posts back. I'd add one of those to the stable given the chance.

I use a fine wire wheel on the bench grinder to clean everything that I can, it does a great job of polishing bare metal too. A wire wheel on the drill for everything else. Angle grinder to clean up around the jaws. Primer and paint. Not a lot of work, really only two hours or so into this.

OK, I'll be the first to say You ****, in fact several are waiting to hear the first You **** award on your vise. If you need new jaws I have a set for $175 that will fit your new $15 vise. Great find.

mtnwkr,

I was just writing this morning to another member about how much I love these block grinders. I have the exact same one, actually three of them but who's counting.

You did do a nice job on that vise.

Mtnwkr: just curious is your moniker for mountain walker or mountain worker? so you say you can use a huge vise. funny thing is I would like one too and i already have a couple big ones. go figure.

thanks for sharing your secret to success for the spiffing up of your Hollands Yost vise. by the way if you don't mind posting a before in one post and after in the next post on the Vise Repair 101 thread because yours is a good candidate for a quick clean up that looks awesome.

Alinc: i guess your Wilton is a pretty good buy, but since the jaws are twice as much as KM usually charges i guess you'll have settle with an OK deal.:lol_hitti

VA: awesome pictures and different names do count even though basically the same vise. thanks

ALL: so here's a challenge that i just thought about. how about posting pictures of the same vises that have different names on them. i know there are several of the smaller ones that are the same vise with different names cast into the vise so post those. and are there big ones that are doubles and post them too.

i can think of Reed's vises they made for Craftsman just for an example and i'm sure there are others. columbian made a ton of other companie's vises besides Craftsmans i'm pretty sure. when there were only a few vise making companies i bet companies like Prentiss, Parker and a few of the really old ones made vises for others and put that companie's name on them. anybody own several verstions of the same vise to post pictures of the duo, trio or the gang?

I started a different thread earlier on a label on a Wilton vise I bought today at a garage sale on the way home from work. It was suggested that I add the photos and info here, so here I am.

I was told that this is a Wilton from 1973. The number on the bottom of the slide is stamped 173.

My original question was if the Wilton label on the jaw was an original Wilton label or is it something that someone added later?

Drivesitfar: You wrote that the casting on this are not common. Could you tell me what might make this different?

Thanks all for the infor so far.

Nickel: thanks for posting the pictures over here where the guys that were probably making this vise hang out. i was in high school and probably worked on Wiltons in metal shop, but i certainly wasn't making them.

the one side of your vise has a different style casting of the name and part # that i don't think I've seen before. it's the one in the first picture you posted on the right side of the vise. the other side has casting that i'm very familiar with. was this common i'm not sure and happy to hear from the experts.

also it looks like a well preserved 40 year old vise that you happened to find at a garage sale.

Reverend Scott------For your jaw price increase---:thumbup::thumbup:

And since we're talking about Wiltons...

How about a C-2???

If anyone "needs" one, there's a new posting on Ebay...could be pricey, though...:willy_nil

See photos below...

Looks like a "pristine" clamper...(Sorry Reverend Scott, but this one won't need any replacement jaws---):lol:And it's still got it's end cap!!!

It's original. I've got a few Wilton's from the 70's and they all have remnants of the sticker. The fact that yours is intact shows your vise want used very much. Nice find:beer:

I actually have one of these 8" Craftsman vises. They are made in Japan, good build quality but light weight for an 8" vise. You can check out a rather old thread about mine here. Still have the vise, these seem to be pretty rare. I've not seen another one with the swivel base intact.

Woodworking vises were mentioned recently, so I thought I would show some of mine.

First, a Record, consider by many woodworkers to be among the best made.

Next is a Stanley #100 picture-framers vise. It holds the wood for cutting, tilts for nailing, and then swivels so that nailing can be done from the adjacent side. This is the only Stanley vise of this style that I've found in several years of looking.

Nexty, a Stanley #400 vise that is similar the #100 but lacking the holders for the saw. I had found only one of these until recently, then walked into a sale with four vises available - yes I got all four.

Finally, I couldn't pass on this little Reed 3" #109 at an estate sale today.

I guess it's time to get the e-bucket out.

:bounce:Went out to the garage sales today. Last one I stopped at they told me to stop back buy next weekend because they were going to clean out an old shed so they could tear it down. Of course I asked if they had any vises. She said she thinks there is and if I wanted to go look go ahead. I found this old 5 inch Yost bolted to a bench. I Asked how much and they said $40.00 I unbolted it and was gone before they could change there mind. There was also an old prentess but it had been broken and welded.
