Drivesit.----Bet you forgot about that L.M. & V. Star vise in your own pile, that has the scalloped pattern. That's probably first cousin to Fuller. Anyway that makes 8 so far.
It's original. I've got a few Wilton's from the 70's and they all have remnants of the sticker. The fact that yours is intact shows your vise want used very much. Nice find![]()
Went out to the garage sales today. Last one I stopped at they told me to stop back buy next weekend because they were going to clean out an old shed so they could tear it down. Of course I asked if they had any vises. She said she thinks there is and if I wanted to go look go ahead. I found this old 5 inch Yost bolted to a bench. I Asked how much and they said $40.00 I unbolted it and was gone before they could change there mind. There was also an old prentess but it had been broken and welded.

I won't comment on price because I don't know the market in your area but I will tell you that it's an extremely nice vise in fantastic condition. Honestly, that's just about as good as they come and 4 1/2" is a great size that should cover most any home-shop need. I like it very much.Thoughts on this item. I'm seeking a purposeful yet older vise for my garage. I know "zero" about what is valuable and what is not. American made is a huge preference though.

That Starrett is a nice vise, BUT, I think it's overpriced.

I'll never stop! I work with Wilton 800's, Yost 38c, huge Reed's, etc at my job and I'd love to have one of those huge guys on a stand at home!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How big is the Yost 38C?----How wide are the jaws?----I have a 34C, 6'' jaws, 167 lbs.

And how big are the Reeds you work with?
I liked my Yost 32C but it's found a new home for a tidy profit lol. Very curious about this 38C

Who knows what ever happened to AndrewH??

I agree with the others, It's a really nice vise but $300 for a 60lb vise is certainly a premium price but not super insane. I bet the seller is banking on the Starrett name even though it's a rebadge Athol.
Having said that it's a very nice vise and it would serve you well. Let it sit for a while and if it doesn't sell, see if he will budge on price.
Ritz: i was thinking the same thing. i emailed him and sent him a text a few days ago and no reply. i hope that bench with a ton of old US steel on it didn't fall on his head.
seriously i do hope he's ok. he might just be taking a break from the vise vice which we all need now and then I guess. maybe it's just his phone or laptop crashed and he doesn't have internet access.
Andrew are you there or did you find a Reed 209 and are spiffing it up before posting it??

Actually Starrett bought Athol, and kept the Athol name for a period for name recognition. it is in fact a Starrett, with roots in the original Athol Co.

Just picked up a Prentiss 20 and a Morgan 45 today. What do you guys think for a first time pickup? The prentiss has the rear swiveling jaw.

)Blue Frog, I have one of those with the label in nearly identical condition as yours. I can't find any pics right now but I will take a look….
I finished up the 6" Wilton restoration the other day. She was pretty far gone but should now live to serve another generation or two.
Here are some before & afters:
I still need to get better at straightening handles. These were pretty bad and still have some wiggles in them.
I made a new collar for the first time. The original was missing and had been replaced with this cobbled-up split collar and some practical yet not-so-beautiful welds. I used brass and was feeling pretty proud of myself for about 45 minutes until I happened to read a post by KMScott where he casually mentions that collars are made from hardened steel. Damn him and all his expertise! At least the brass is a full 1/4" thick so it will be interesting to see if it warps under "normal" use
The hardest part was cutting it out!
Here she is ready to go back to work. She's a Wilton #60 (6" jaw) with no date stamp to be found
That's a really great job and I think your brass retainer will be fine. Brass came stock on some of the big Parkers.
