LOL.... Finally got the naked one back together... I had to use a smaller vise on the back of the slide as a counter-weight so it wouldn't tip forward as I fit the front collar.

The other 4C I cleaned the dynamic and got a coating of primer on. Haven't decided on what color to use. I'm heading to the hardware store so maybe I'll pick something up for it.

Yeah that just don't look right... Either someone cut it off or broke it off.. Such a shame the rest looks like it's in really good condition.

Yes, that support should go about half way past the part of the D jaw that has "Presntis" on it.

But I noticed the way the jaws didn't line up.
And that made me look at the lower support.
Contacted the seller and they say it's not broken off.
Claims the jaws don't line up due to wear.
Looks like it's missing to me.

And why would the thing "just stop" unscrewing it?

Well a quick look at the vise tonight found the reason it won't thread all the way out. This sideways pin no doubt is there to reduce deflection of the slide(s) but it also runs into the nut when you try to screw the dynamic jaw all the way out. It's a bit of a head scratcher, but I'll really dig into this thing when I have a few hours on my hands soon.

But those are some wicked jaws. The vise reminds me of a Columbian or two I've seen, made of welded-up plate.

Once I started going down the rabbit hole of vintage vise addiction, I remembered that my father in law mentioned inheriting a cool old vise from his father when he passed away at the age of 91. I finally remembered to snap a couple photos of it when my wife and I went to visit last week so here it is. It's a Morgan with 3 1/2" jaws, and what I think is pretty unique is the mounting method with the through-bench threaded post. Anybody have more information on it? He said he'd love to know more of the history behind the vise.

I have a couple of vises with that type of mount, a Yost no.1 and an Oswego, both 3 1/2 inchers. That style was pretty common in the early 20th century, but was replaced with the familiar benchtop mount. I guess it's more convenient to loosen the swivel from topside, but the main reason may be that the thickness of the bench doesn't matter with the top mount. One of my benches is 10" thick - neither of the studs on my vises is long enough to mount on that bench.

Yup, Columbian 504 1/2. It will be surprisingly light when you pick it up.

Personally, I would offer 50 for it since they are very common.

It's a massive Prentiss and the base is simply awesome; check out that dynamic jaw base support. One of you need to make a run to Jersey and take it.

Mac: that is some good old US steel in that Craiglslist ad and can't really tell if vise is modified, missing parts or what's the scoop, but maybe we'll get better pictures if one of the members that lives about 3000 miles closer than me buys it and posts a few more pictures.

VA: those have the scallops on the tops of their jaws. were those included in your list? nice looking yard in the background. that bench might be stepping up to Balane's stump and Autopots lift.

of course if you like a little cement driveway in the background you'll have to have a picture taken at Get's house.

my cabinet is too dark so i'll have to start taking mine to the beach and find a piece of driftwood when my bride and i take a drive and a walk to get there.

Polizei-----You can find a similar Auto-Vise on page #93---Post #1856. Looks like Demographic was shooting for the raw metal look, but left a little residue of red here and there. Couldn't tell you the code, but I'll bet oldldh will scream Arrest-Me-Red. Beautiful old vises though, and obviously pretty rare. That's only the second one I've seen on this thread. Mr. Churchill probably melted most of them down to make tanks.

That probably wouldn't be too far from the original colour, in all honesty. From the ones I've seen with original paint, it did seem a rather gaudy red. Fire engine red would probably be the closest thing I could compare it to offhand.

They're one of those which don't quite make it onto the rare list, but they're not overly common either. They do crop up, but not as frequently as most Records. I think the 74/75's were just a limited audience/appeal type affair. One interesting feature they did have was the pipe bending feature, (bottom right of the front jaw, looking from the front), and they had pipe jaw inserts too below the main jaw inserts, but most mechanics seem to favour the 2* series vices, judging from the workshops/garages I've seen. I personally think it may have been the exposed leadscrew which led to these being thinner on the ground than most. They have some interesting features built in as standard, but they seem to try to cover all bases without excelling specifically in any. Saying that though, I do like them. I have a 75 here which needs a new leadscrew and nut to get it sorted, and much as I have been tempted to just break it for parts and use the rear jaw as an anvil, I've resisted and left it intact so far. Seems a shame not to get it up and running if possible. They are a quirky vice with a tangible appeal, IMHO.

Give it an extended reprieve for now.----I'll tell you why you can.----Short story,---About 25 years ago, a coworker of mine was selling his Chevy Step-side, short bed pickup. It was beautiful and well worth more than the $2500.00 he was asking for it. He was a short fused and right excitable little chap, and knowing this I couldn't resist the temptation to ruffle his feathers. I wasn't interested in the truck anyway so I lowballed him. I really lowballed him. I said I'll give you $1000.00 for it. He stiffened up just like private when a general enters the room. He said, and I quote, "It don't eat and it don't drink". He did an about face, left the building and didn't speak to me for three days. But I never forgot what he said and I use it from time to time. Like when the madam says, "another vise?" I just whip that out. She likes horses.

Small salesman Prentiss. In good shape, just needs refurbishing. This is my smallest.

I just picked up most of a thoroughly abused little nickel plated vice very similar to this one, 2" jaws.
Can someone point me to pictures of other little guys that may be more like mine, It'd be nice to see some more details and I'll make the missing pieces to repair mine.

Looks like someone tried to really use it as a vice, which I'm sure worked to some extent until it flew to pieces. It is very well made and finished but just not enough meat to it for serious work.

Grigg: here's a picture that might help you. that vise you now own looks like a Prentiss and here's one that they might have made for jewelers that i think was an inch wide jaw.

some guys used the back of the vise as an anvil which is never a good thing and here's a Rock Island vise i have to restore or use as a parts vise with the same issue.

VA: Horses for the bride to keep her looking away from the chain gang. i had and have kids for that, but now that they are almost gone maybe i'll have to buy a farm.

Actually Arrest-Me-Red is probably the worst color, ever see Art Deco anything painted that color? ...except maybe a fire extinguisher.

Skorpio: i'm pretty sure in most parts of the world you might not be able to drive that little pink car safely, but it is cute and nice work finding that after Fretter's comment.

i think they used up all the red on the tool boxes as well as the extinguishers and some stores i go into if i need a can they don't even carry a version of any red spray paint.

Isn't that a Craftsman vise with a Snap-On sticker slapped on it with the same warranty?

Too bad Wilton doesn't offer this same vise with the same warranty, especially since they are the ones who make them.

It's not a Craftsman, my impression of those isn't as favorable as others have posted. I've only seen the newer style though. This was a Snap On but the Wilton version of the 1750 is the identical vise. The only difference is color and badging.

Craftsman vises look only similar but are different in many ways. They've only ever released a 4 1/2" model anyway. Also, they've never been cast with Tradesman model numbers; 1740, 1750, 1760, etc. Snap On and Wilton versions share model numbers since they're the same vise in every physical way.

Edit: Snap On and Wilton vises have identical warranties as far as I know but I think Snap On is better to deal with on post-warranty issues. This vise will have an expired warranty no matter who manufactured it.
