How about free? Heard the eBay chime on my phone on the way to work and they refunded my money. Now I feel bad. You guys think that it's new, it's just not exactly what was listed on the box.

They don't want the vice returning then? You reasonably expected something slightly different, gauging from the box. You didn't have any control over the content of the box.

HobKirk, Look up the threads on Electrolysis. An E tank is IMO the best way to get the rust and old paint off without messing up the patina. I'm not a fan of sand bead or media basting for old tools... I can always tell (assuming there is any exposed metal) and simply walk away.

Same as Outlaw. Another thing I seem to be seeing more and more of late are swirl marks on machined surfaces from grinder cleaning/abrasive attachments too, where someone has tried 'tidying' something up. That's as bad as blasting a surface, IMHO.

I made 2 trips to Chicago to get these 2 over the last week. (1.5 hours away). I just need to see what to do about the swivel handle on the parker. The athol is in very nice shape. And my first suckage!

I noticed the parker from the Chicago CL nice grab! I remember in the add the vise was held down by a bunch of wood screws LOL. On another note there seems to always be nice vises in Chicago no wonder autopts hasn't moved;).

Here is a ad that I think will answer some old questions it depicts a welded steel Columbia vise that a couple members own.

rusty65 - Thank you for posting that ad.
I had figured out (with the help of the GJ members here) that the vise on my grandfather's bench was most likely a Columbian #804. But I didn't have definitive proof until now.

You may have finally cleared up a small mystery that a select few of us have been pondering for some time now.

Could you tell us where the ad was printed, and about what year ? I suspect mid 40's.

The ad is old for sure my guess is it couldn't be any newer then 1935 because on the next page a reed vise is shown with the older style handle.

You have been lurking for two years and saved your money for the big one to come along. Good to see the Tucson 978 Parker has a new home. Welcome and I bet there are more besides the big Parker.

Cretedog: Welcome to Garage Journal and i think you own one of the nicest clampers I've seen. could it be that you were the lucky one to buy the Parker KMScott made those jaws for that Parker 978 that was restored down in Tucson?

here are some other pictures of it (or of it's twin) that I saved in case you needed any more. the picture with Danny Joe is priceless and is he going to own that vise some day?

Trecash: thanks for posting your vise family. you can ship all of page one to me and you'll probably still have enough vises to use in your shop? i can't say I've seen that Craftsman made by Reed with that badge on it so care to share the story on where that one or a new 15 year old 8 inch Record was found?

JRobb: a couple nice ones for sure. good luck on finding the wrench because i think Getridofone needs one or two also. better use the original Peterson vise grips for that Parker if you have a pair. or just use it as a non-swivel and make a stand for it. :D

trecash6850, great collection. That Record No 8, is it a recent vintage, maybe after Irwin bought them? There is something about the look and shape that is different to it. Could also be the swivel models are slightly different.

cretedog, if you are the lucky SOB that got the Tuscon 978, my hats off to you. I don't know what you paid, but in my books, it's a great purchase.

Goes to show you, out of nowhere, both cretedog & trecash6850, "lurking" and not saying a word, come out and show what they have. I am pretty sure there are tons of great vises out there that people don't post, couldn't be bothered or do not know of this thread.

Just to say that there is a high probability that a few 5198's and 209's are out there, but the owners haven't come forward. Heck, if I had those, I would fear Homeland Security showing up at 3 am with a black opps team.

Nevermind Homeland Security, the real threat would be some "oldie" breaking into my house. !

Okay... page 979.... Where's the 9" Parker at??? LOL...

Reed Vise 134 1/2 R - Post 2

But I don't know what restricts the vise from unscrewing too far. I must have removed a "stop" somewhere, but I don't remember where. HELP?

There isn't anything that restricts them from opening too far. Back in those days (most) people had common sense to operate equipment. ;) Typically though you will run out of thread then have to pull the slide out by hand a couple more inches, it won't just unscrew and fall flat on the floor (hopefully).

I don't really understand your complaint. It looks to me like the item was as pictured on the box.

If they refunded your money, don't you think you should return the vise?

Balane---

As I predicted...

Your "Kermitized" 1750 is a "must have"...

An Extreme Green aficionado will get it...

Over five days left, and over $ 250.00 already...

WOW!!!

That makes me consider painting my 1750 green and offering it on ebay.
I only paid $180 brand new for mine. (List was $330 at the time). Of course, that was over 20 years ago.

It's not, box says 5", one that was in it is slightly smaller 4 1/2" and a different style.

After spending too much time searching here are my opinions.

1. I can only find three sizes of Scout's, 3 1/2" and 4" like what's pictured on the box with a normal front dynamic jaw and the 4 1/2" you got with the dynamic jaw being the rear. No 5" found.

2. Other 4 1/2" Scout's like years clearly have C55 markings on them, I don't see them on yours however. The box is marked C-55.

3. Wilton may have used the same vise illustration for all Scout box's even though yours is a different style.

4. I think Wilton may have had bad info on that box, should have read 4.5" instead of 5. What's the opening on that vise? Measure it with the screw flush with the back of the rear jaw.

5. If this were me I would refund them $50, I believe they were honest and above board in this transaction.

Well someone else will have free reign on the Chicagoland vises, that is my last trip there for a while as I'm moving north 6 hours from here. I'll start raiding the twin cities supply then. :p

Oh, I see how it works. You move into an area, clean them out, and then move on to the next town (victim). We've got a handle on your MO now. We'll be watching out for you. :lol_hitti
