Scored some metal cabinets

Picked these up at a garage sale - paid $6 for the 3, plus the guy tossed in a corner one that lost the door long ago.

The feel quite sturdy, with the exception of the one you see the half hose reel on. That one's hinge pivot has been traded for a nail, and he had some heavy welding cable on it. opens and shuts just fine but you can feel the wobble because of that nail thing.

I used Aircraft Remover for stripping and then hit them hard with the wire wheel on my harbor freight 4" grinder. There must have been 6 thick layers of paint on these. Yikes.

I will be refinishing those steel benches that I got from the same sale. Eventually I'll get a welder and build supports to hold my toolboxes on, keeping the wheels on the bench, so the whole unit acts as one. For now it'll be rigged up to be over the toolboxes - still mobile, just more of a pain in the *** to move. And they sit pretty darn high at the moment.

I primered the cabinets with rattlecan leftovers and some rustoleum. Inside is Antique White rustoleum, and the outside is a custom color match to a sinclair sign. Same scheme used on the other storage cabinets and it works well for me.

Nice cabinets. Good luck with the cabinets, bench et al. Would love to see pics when you are finished.

I've got the same ones. Changed the handles. I put them with a hodge podge of other ones.

Deezee those do look the same. Do you know much about them? Anything particularly cool or are they just run of the mill cabinets from the 80s or whatever? My guy said he figured he'd had them up for 30+ years (and seriously... that paint layered on there was a pain in the *** so i'm inclined to believe they saw a few different styles).

Actually I wanted to mention - they looked SO scary with rust and crud I thought they were going to be halfway junk. the rust ended up being more of a bit of surface rust that pushed the layers of paint away - so once the paint was gone the metal was relatively clean. Woo! Also, the insides had that classic boomerang type style of cabinet liner/wallpaper glued down. That had also looked pretty nasty, but upon ripping that out and grinding it down, again I had relatively clean metal.

They definitely feel solid and are pretty heavy so I have no doubt they'll function to 100% of my needs.

I actually don't know for sure what I'll put in all of them, or exactly how I'll put them up. I think for sure I'll put the two horizontal ones centered-ish over the benches. I say ish because I have that conduit running down for electrical and I don't want to bother messing with that, so I'll take that into consideration. I am torn on location of the taller one. If you reference the pic above, the logical places seem to be either to the right on the opposing wall (under stereo, where the dos equis beer mirror is) or on the same wall, but taking down the chrome shelf and putting it there. Thoughts?

Here's a pic of tonight's final spray down - The main surfaces have 2 coats of the green, and the top and the bottom (that nobody can see) got one beefy coat. I'll double check and make sure I don't have glaring missed spots but otherwise I'm calling it good. The finish turned out pretty good for my first go-round with that sprayer. I see a bit of texture/orange peel almost but I don't know how much of that is from my novice spraying or how much is expected with spraying latex. either way, they look pretty good up close to me so I'm sure I'll be thrilled when they're up in the wall and in use.

Awesome job! My cabinets came from my neighbours house that was built in the 1950's. Youngstown was the brand name. Work well for what I use them for.

I like the color choice on the cabinets. Very unique and good save BTW.

Concerning conduit. Use a hole saw and with a little bit of work you can ad outlets in the box to power battery chargers, etc. and carry the power through to ad an additional outlet at the bottom.

Thanks guys!

I'll have to think about the outlet thing - it could be handy to have some power inside where dust can't get on whatever I'm plugging in. That being said, the cabinets are 3 ft wide and the benches are 4 ft wide, and it looked like it would work out that the outlet/conduit would be right in the middle of the space between the end of cabinet and end of bench, on the left side...if that makes sense.

The outlet in questions is the 4 gang in this pic. This is roughly the area where everything will end up - with the benches getting positioned and secured to wall, then wiggling the boxes in underneath.

Here's the handles before being sprayed to match the inside color - and same color on the others you can see in the background in previous posts. Deezee - did yours look like this?

Also check out the overspray mess... I do think it'll clean up ok with a lil elbow grease

Mine were different. Hard to tell in this photo before I changed them, they had a curve in them.

Thanks Deezee - i think i know that style. I should have pics up later showing the rough location of benches so I can better eyeball where I want to mount the cabinets.

So I think I'll ditch the metal wire shelving and arrange the benches/cabinets something like this.

Also - showing off the neat emblem the guy riveted onto the cabinet - he said it came off a fire truck in a town not far from here. No clue how old but looks pretty cool.

And the big Dawn vice (6") I got. The two steel benches, including the vice, set me back $60. Woo! Other vice is a freebie 4" littlestown.

thanks Lippy for the footwork - that's pretty sweet to have as an emblem. I think I'll leave it kinda tarnished like it is now.

Well, they're up! Still tinkering with what will go where and what to do with the space beneath the taller one. And the benches will get started soon too, but that's about where they will be.
