Bob I am planning to get up in my attic above my garage and mount some 2"X8"s between the ceiling joists and mount mine to the ceiling . You could do the same on the walls just screw the 2X8s to 2 studs and then bolt the reel to the 2X8s . I dont know that I would trust even a piece of 3/4" plywood these little buggers are heavy not to mention the stresses involved when you pull the hose out of them.

2 x 8 " would be better , didn't think about how heavy these are .

I have a Bonus room over my garage , so no way to get in the ceiling .

May put the 2 x8 's on the wall and paint .

My air reel is just held up by 3/16" toggle bolts through the drywall. IIRC 2 of the holes hit the studs so I used large wood screws w/washers on those. I suppose screwing it to a board that straddles 2 studs would be better. :)

That would work fine . I guess if you really wanted it to look good you could go to a steel supplier that sells drops and get a couple pieces of 1/8" plate 16" long by 8" wide and drill holes through them to mount the reel to as well as drilling holes to attatch them to the studs .

I found using a 12" piece of 2x10 was definitely the best option. As well as giving it a good solid platform, if it wiggles, or the hose comes back fast, the drywall (or ??) doesn't get damaged. Asthetically as well, I think it looks better to have a block of wood centering the unit. As well, I used deck screws (or thin lag bolts) to avoid splitting the 2x 4's in the wall!

I have 2x10 blocking behind the rock ceiling. When you look at the mounting foot for the reel, the holes are 1/2 inch and 2 of the 4 holes are slotted while the other two are drilled. Of the drilled holes, one is aligned outside of the reel, so a long bolt with ratched and socket will easily clear. The last hole aligns with the rim, so can't get a long bolt thru.

I plan to use (3) 3/8x2.5 lags with washers in the two slots and one easy acces hole. (pre-install the lags with washers for the slots then the others). The last poor access hole, I will be using a pre-installed 3/8 wood anchor (lag threads one side, machine thread the other) and then a nut.

I will also be using a union for the supply hose.

Just got back from Lowes with the parts, maybe later today will hang them.

I agree with the comments of the others above. I have an open ceiling (at least for now) and the reel is mounted to to a 2x4 on top of the bottom member of the trusses. In theory you could use anchors in drywall but given the amount of tugging the reel will see I'd be concerned about pulling the anchors out.

I got to looking in my garage and I found where the top beam runs across , on the sidewall there is a support of 2 x 4's about 6" wide .

It is right above my compressor, that will work out great.

I'll get some lag bolts and predrill into the studs .

there are several ways I would use

I think the plywood idea would be fine.

you could also drill 2 holes on center in the base of the hose reel and just mount with 2 lag bolts to the stud/joist

you could also use some 1x1 metal tube or unistrut. bolt the reel to the tube or unistrut and then bolt the tube/unistrut to two adjacient studs/joists using 4 bolts

I have mine bolted to the pallet racking in the garage

I took a scrap piece of 1/4" thick Aluminum that was 6"x19", I drilled holes to run 3" lag bolts through the aluminum plate and bolt it up to the ceiling. The holes were, of course, 16" apart so I would catch 2 Ceiling Joists.

Then I drilled and Tapped the holes to mount my Hose reel, (4" wide and 5" apart) I used 11/16" bolts that were 1" long with Flat and lock washers.

Everything tightened up real nice...that Baby is heavy...I'm glad that I test fit everything on the floor first, Didn't want to hold it over my head too long.

I used the same Aluminum plate, only 6" x 48" to mount under a set of upper cabinets.
I drilled and tapped every 4" to accept Female Air fittings and hung my Air tools so that they are easily accessed. This idea I had seen on one of the posts a few weeks back. It was a great idea.

Keep all those great ideas and pics comming and I'll try to put some that I have, might just help someone else.

Well, here is my booty fab mount.:bounce: Use what ya got, right?
11 gauge 2" square tube, 3/8"X 2 1/2" Lag Screws into the studs, 7/16"X 1 1/2 bolts to secure the reel to the struts.

I'm sure glad these reels are black (least mine are) instead of that blue one in the ad! Course, $23.99, who's complaining!

I mounted mine between my two garage doors. Behind the drywall is solid studs. I used 3/8" lag bolts (four of them). Air is not yet connected to it. I still need to run my air lines.

Warning and Caution

These reels are heavy, about 35 lbs. Thats a lot of weight on a pretty long arm from the mounting bolts. I don't think mounting into sheetrock with toggle bolts is an option:(:(:(

Be aware, you might find a liquid in the air hose, I did with mine. Looked like water, but had a silicone feel to it. Be sure and purge the hose thoroughly before attaching an air tool to it or using it to fill a tire.

Due to the weight, I found it much easier to pull the hose from the reel, and catch it on one of the clicks when fully pulled out. Then I moved the hose stop from the end of the hose to right at the fairlead rollers to prevent it from retracting. This makes the reel much lighter and easier to handle and heft when mounting it.

Guys and gals.....just thinking out loud here......but instead of trying to go with a fancy mount why not go for a secure mount....most of you do welding....take a piece of square tubing....cut it to your desired height.....take a piece of flat plate drill 4 holes on each corner big enough for lag bolts......weld the plate on the bottom of the square tubing.....weld another piece of flat plate on top of the steel tubing, (this plate is where you will bolt on the air hose reel), anchor the assembly on the cement floor near the air compressor or wherever it would be convenient......secure and neat.....lag bolts in drywall or wood eventually will work themselves loose.

I made a bracket so I could attach hose reel to my workbench. I believe it's a convenient location. For the bracket I used 1/2" aluminum. The reel is about 50 lbs. so I needed the bracket to be strong.

I have more in the Unistrut to mount the reel, than the reel itself cost!!! I looked at all the possibilities and with a metal building you are limited in how you mount stuff. I did a mock up of mounting the reel on the purlin using some real stout Unitstrut Ell brackets, and putting it right on the purlin flange. Had everything C-clamped in place. It looked OK, but the purlin was too flexible, so I backed up to my original plan, which is what you see in the pic. Lots of Unistrut wasted, the roof and wall purlins all require a piece of Unistrut 64 inches long to span between two of them, so between this, and the lighting installation, I have lots of 56 inch pieces left over (10 ft sticks). Lowes was about $2 cheaper per stick, theirs is cadium plated, Home Depot's is galvanize slick finish.

Forgot to add that I mounted the reel so the hose comes off the back/bottom, rather than the top as shown in several of the pics I've seen. This puts the pulling force close to the mounting bracket, and is actually tending to lift the reel against the weight. Pulling the hose off the front/top means there is an extra foot or more of leverage/force being exerted on the bracket and its mounting, and pulling it in a downward direction, with the weight of the reel, rather than against it.

I used 2 pieces of plywood glued together. The carriage bolts run through the back for mounting the hose reel and the lag bolts (countersunk) run through the front into a stud. Having the block mounted to the wall with the carriage bolts sticking out to hang the reel on while perched on a ladder is a real plus.

Note: Two different mounts are pictured.

Rick

you mean 17 1/2" long not 16", right?

That's pretty much how I was planning on doing mine, though my studs are still exposed (building near completion, finally) so I may just fill in some added studs in a few spots for future mounting purposes. That way I'll know there are areas throughout with solid wood to bolt lag things to.

Wanted to add and option for mounting a hose reel that I saw at a tire shop a couple days ago. I don't have a pic, but what the guy did was to mount the hose reel to the shop floor using the bolt holes in the hose reel mounting plate. Instead of leaving the arm bracket in the factory shipped position with the hose rollers pointing up, he removed the bolts from the roller arm bracket and rotated it so that the hose hose pulled out "parallel" to the shop floor. It worked great in his shop. I liked it!

You guy's are making me jealous...I'm still fighting with Lowe's to honor the $23 price with no luck. Right now I'd like to stuff and mount the manager from Lowes. (no, I don't mean "mount" in that way)

I have a question on your airl ines. Why did you go with the 90"s at the drops going up instead of just teeing in and going down on your drops?

It looks real good.Just dont see what its purpuse would be.

In this way you draw the air from the top, leaving any condensation to run along the bottom of the pipe and down into the drip leg.

One of my local stores has a handful in stock (as far as I know these are the only ones anywhere in the area) - probably because they refuse to pricematch. I brought in a printout from the website but no soap; he wasn't gonna sell it for that price, but I was nice to him and he said that he'd sell it for their cost, so I saved a bit over $30 from the regular price. Not a raging deal, but I think I'd have to look pretty hard to find it much lower, so I'm satisfied.

I would have go them all with just one telephone call to corporate.

After having my reel for over 3 years, I finally mounted mine last week. I did pre-plan for a ceiling mount with a 2 x 10 mounted between the ceiling joists and 3/8" x 1 1/2" lag bolts.

Also, I plumbed in a shut off valve in case the hose would break, so I can still have air in the rest of my shop. I don't know about you guys, but I don't keep an extra 50' hose laying around for that "just in case" scenario :)

I called the national customer service line and the person I talked with said that it is up to the individual stores whether or not they will price match. She said I could leave a complaint (which I did) and they would contact me within 24 hours. Never heard from them.
The rationale that the store manager gave me is that the stores that are selling these for 23 bucks are getting rid of their stock. His store will continue to stock this item, therefore they aren't going to slash their price. As far as I know there are still 2 more on the shelf at the East San Jose store where I got mine. If you wanna go after them, hope you have better luck than I did. I guess I could have gotten nasty with the guy, but hey, it's his store and he doesn't have to sell it to me if he doesn't want to. It's not worth being an A-hole to save a few bucks. Still got it for over $30 off which isn't bad at all.

I mounted mine to the floor. I drilled the concrete and used some expanding anchors. I mounted it close to the stairs to keep the shop floor clear.

If you do this ensure you will have enough clearance to the wall so when you change out the pvc hose for a rubber one that does not bind up in the cold, it will not hit the wall :|
