Tips for removing glue from concrete flooring.

I am wanting to epoxy my garage floor but it used to have adhesive tiles on the concrete. I scraped up all the tiles a few months ago but they left a black adhesive. I have thought about renting a floor grinder but I am a little worried about asbestos in the black glue.

Here is the floor in question.

I purchased this stuff tonight but its pricey and so far hasn't done much.

I'm not sure about which mastic remover works best but you should definitely not use a grinder as there is a high probability that what's on your floor has asbestos in it. You might just have to experiment with different mastic remover's until you find one that works

How old are the tiles? If they're newer than 15-20 years, then you're probably safe.

The way I see it, is you can grind it yourself with a good dust collection system, and a respirator. Or pay an abatement company to do the exact same thing, but charge you a lot more, and try to use scare tactics to convince you their way is the only way to go.


When I use my grinder with PCDs, it scrapes the floors very efficiently, and it collects 90% of the glue. Its heavy stuff, so any big globs of glue it cant **** up, it just leaves on the floor. It doesnt really stir it up any. As well, any little bits of glue, or dust get sucked into the vac. so nothing gets thrown in the air.

Btw, you cant be too concerned about it, if you let your dog lay on the floor. If I had something toxic on my floor, I'd be keeping my dogs off it. They sniff, lick, and chew everything and anything.

I need to go to my folks tomorrow night after work and pick up a floor scraper but with a shovel I've only gotten this far.

Should I put it on thicker?

Im worried about it becoming dust and kicking it up into the air, it should be fine as it sits. I still may grind it, I was just looking for some other ways to do it.

So you would recommend a floor grinder and a dust collector? Im far from an expert on asbestos but everything I have read says black glue is usually made from asbestos.

When I was at HomeDepot, they also do an attachment for a floor maintainer.
You know thoes things which the guys use to polish the floors.

The attachment is a big disc which has cutters on there, like razor blades, BUT they are diamond encrusted.

So the idea, instead of grinding and producing a lot of dust, it will "chop" the mastic up.

Though, one thing with the asbestos, I'd probably like to point out. The asbestos is usually deep in the mastic and not readily released , so your doggy sniffy and licking it, wont do a lot, I also DONT thing, ingesting it will harm you,

Its when the fibers are breathed in, they get stuck in the lungs. "although" I'm no expert.

If you are sure it's not asbestos laden adhesive then the Diamabrush Concrete Prep Tool mounted on a hand grinder is a really efficient way to deal with it.

The one you rented is a absolute gem. Its the same brand as I use, just a smaller machine than mine. Its an absolute workhorse. I dont know if you looked underneath but it has a number of heads, with removable/ replaceable segments. The machine can be used for concrete polishing, grinding, terrazzo, hardwood floors, and like 3-4 other things.

The edco machines are not anywhere near as efficient, though still good.

Pop on an audiobook, and grind away. Keep it moving back and forth. You'll need a concrete vac to go with it. A shop vac will not work.

Mpower, you need to use the least aggressive method to remove. Buy a good chemical - check YouTube for Bean-e-doo or the like. Grinding is not a safe way to remove black mastic. If you are sure it's not ACM then grind away. If you are unsure you need to find out so you don't risk your future health or that of your family's
