Here it is ******* in vise jail, ready to make its way down the hill to the shop
What a great story and amazing how the stars aligned to make it happen.

LOL... I bet it gets "lost" somewhere along the way and we shall never see it again, except in stories of long ago...

BC: so did it check out and is Oldie getting a new Avatar? since it doesn't have a badge on it is it dated on the slides like the ones that are badged?
There is a date on the slide but I don't remember what it is at the moment. I'll let you know when I see the vise again
Thanks Fretters,
I appreciate the comments and yes you are correct, something will come my way. It's amazing how rare items crosses ones path again.
Not sure what you mean by things turn up around here. Do you mean vises come up for sale on GJ? I never tried buying a vise off Gj, I've only asked half joking but nothing so far.
A small Chas Parker like a 972 or a small Prentiss would be great. A small Woden would also be great. I actually have a use for it.
And in case someone has a Swinden just laying around needing a new home, Let me know.
Cheers and happy labor day

I just had a thought. Can the forum administrators re-number page 1005 to read "page 5198"?![]()

Drive VERY carefully on the way home!

Here's a Craftsman Vise I found in ebay. I just finished restoring it yesterday. It'll be mounted to my bench soon.
Behold, the mighty Craftsman 5198!!

What can anyone tell me about this Craftsman #5183 vise. Looks similar to a Reed to me.
Your vise was made by Reed Mfg Co of Erie PA sometime after 1935 and before 1949. After that time Craftsman was getting their vises from another mfg.

Had a real nice visit with Andrew H today. He finally got a day off and was able to pick up his Parker 436 I had been storing. His penance, besides the 3 hr drive each way was having to eat burgers from my grill and help me get the Ridge Tool Co. 61 CP out of the truck.
After some careful lifting we were able to get it on the scale and find out it weighed 155 lbs, which is tiny compared to the Parker at 187 lbs.
I think it's gonna clean up real nice. Has a piece of the leadscrew knob/ casting missing but still functions quite well. Handle needs to be straightened as well.
I may ask KMScott if he could fill/weld/mill the missing part of the knob similar to the milling he does on the Wilton screws.
I know it's not a Craftsman 5198 but hey it's a big vise and I paid less than $1 per pound

Old H, congrats on the Craftsman. Im glad you found it.
Here is a vise I picked up today. Wilton C1, missing one pipe jaw but otherwise in fantastic shape.
Also a pic of my Wilton 1760. I just like this pic
Some one tried to buy my Parker 825 today...I dont think so.![]()

BC: nice rope job on Oldie's 5198. is it making the trip to Alabama on the back of your truck so you can pick up the truck load of cash he had to pay for it and bring it back to the previous owner?
at one point there was some talk about a few members taking 200 or so mile trips with the unicorn in a member's care all the way to Alabama.
Oldie: congrats because i'm guessing it's yours and not BC's. now the quest for the 368 pounder begins, but take a few nights off while you cherish this find. cheers old man.![]()

I will do my best to start ASAP. Check for pictures of progress hopefully by the end of the week.

Not the best picture.
You find alot of real vises.![]()
What did you use for finger savers on the 1760?

how about a small jaw with an open screw vise and maybe a 1930's or older for a guess.Wrench:
Joe: sorry can't say about the #95, but numbering sounds like maybe an older one. any pictures? more details on size or just spend the $60 if it isn't broken or damaged and get us some good pictures. also to make a non swivel into a swiveler all you need to do is make a nice stand. good luck

Hi everyone, need some help. Got a call from a guy looking to sell me a Parker 95 fixed base vise for $60.00. I cannot find this model anywhere. Can anyone educate me please? 4.5" jaws.
I'm not a fixed base guy as you may know, love the swivilin' lifestyle, but always looking for a deal!![]()

Joe, It might a 954 1/2 95 + 4 1/2 and it is a 4 1/2" jaw width. He thought the model was 95 and it was marked with the 4 1/2 width next![]()
