Got the 954 1/2 home this morning, very clean and sharp. Jaws are tight and condition is perfect. If anyone wants this please pm me. It was too nice for me to pass up. I drove 130 miles to get it, paid 60. Im sure there is some non-swivelin ******* that wants this.
Just want to cover my time.

Got a small anvil for the work bench. Paid $60. Finally!!! I really needed one. Oh, also off topic, here are some baby anvils my blacksmith Claude has.

I've oft wondered about how you and others manage to part with stuff like you do. Me, I'm terrible at it. If owt comes here, even if I had the intention originally of selling it on, I can rarely part with owt once it's here. I become attached to stuff easily.

Not in my case. I just keep looking for that last dreg of empty wallspace which I can fit a suitable shelf or support on. Then, if I do convince myself that I'll really never use something, the little 'un makes me feel guilty if I try selling it. One of those occasions where it's really not helpful the fact that at least one of the bairns takes after you.

I like this vise a lot. It's a 1947 Craftsman 5161, 3 1/2" jaws, 41 pounds, opens to 6" It's in very nice, lightly used condition inside and out and works perfectly. Manufactured by Rock Island. If I had a collector's bone in my body this is one I'd hang on to.

I just tripped over mine today while moving some things around.

Just when I thought I had finally forgotten that aggravating little pile of ****, I stub my toe against it and the fun starts all over again.

If I could ever figure out how the mechanism works for the quick release, I would finish it and sell it ASAP.

its not a quick release and i did just find out its a pattern makers vise rare as hens teeth, I started another thread and a member just posted a link.
and i was gonna trade earlier today i am glad i didn't i guess they didn't make them long wow i just stumbled upon it at a pawn shop for a Jackson

I'm not sure the shade of pink and the can doesn't say looks like bubble gum maybe but I don't know. I do know it sure does get dirty easily the black spots in the photo are proof because it sure isn't rust. As for high lighting the mold Massey used sure wasn't great because it's missing a C from Chicago (chi ago) and the lettering is pretty badly formed in general.

VA: i was at my parent's 60th anniversary dinner when you finally showed your HUGE railroad vise. i still think it's cool and anytime you get tired of it on your shelf just ship it to me and i'll pay shipping and add $10 to your original investment. i want a few cool little vises so i can catch a really big one so put a few more in the flat rate box and i'll add some funds to you railroad vise fund.

I saw these, but they are way too $$$ in my opinion.

The problem with a lot of these, for me, are the problems you DONT see, such as on my 825. I have a split tail on the dynammic jaw that caused me 2 days labor and $50 bucks to fix. If I were to sell this I could never recoup my $$.

They havent sold yet, lets see how long it takes.

Kevin: many makers make (or made) those type of vises and i think Balane restored one that was a Versa Vise and it sold on Ebay for 6 times what that guy in Dayton is selling his for. i'd like to own one because they have so many uses with that interesting swivel base and wide jaws. here's a video showing how to use one in case you might want to pick that one up.

That is a very good price for a Versa-Vise. That would sell on eBay for over $200 as it sits. They clean up really nicely and look beautiful imho. Here's a few shots of the one I did and it got around $325 I think. Been a while.

These are super well made vises and fit a specific need for smallish work that needs to be moved around to a lot of different angles. Gunsmiths love them. The one you linked to has the base and that's important because a lot are missing those. If I were closer I would definitely go and pick that one up as soon as I could.

There are two accessories that you should ask about; there is a right angler adaptor to stick on the base and then stick the vise into allowing it to be offset. and there are pipe/round stock jaws that drop in and straddle the slide (Craftsman did this on one or more of their homeowners vises)

Could you please break the vise down and post some pictures of the mechnism that makes the vise tighten? Mine just spins but there are some parts in there. I'm assuming they are worn out but i need to see what one looks like in order to make one.

These things don't have the standard "rear nut" like so many other vises have.

Got it done last night. Waxed the slide and bought some spray for the other metal parts. I didn't polish out the metal as much as some of the guys on here because it will be my only vise and see lots of use. I painted it with some Krylon True Blue because I had a could old cans laying around. It think its a pretty close match to my MAC toolbox. Here are some pic, one with it next to the USA Craftsman it is replacing. Thank you guys for your encouragement on this vise, I think I will really enjoy it.

I'm not going to get it, as I just posted it up if some others might be interested, BUT, after watching the video, I may just change my mind. That thing is pretty badass. I was thinking from the pic I showed, that it pivoted on a ball, but I see how it works now.

Kevin: one thing i might mention and Balane can attest that some of those have broke and been repaired so check it out good before buying it if you do. also if you change your mind on owning it later and would rather put the cash into something else please PM me and if i haven't bought one yet i might still be interested.

Sandman, I have been practicing on tightening up the vises I restore, first I tighten up the nut by adding a new pin and having it fit as tight as I can against the nut, even if I have to add a round sleeve over the stop pin. Then I added a new Copper/Aluminum wear plate and doubled the thickness from 1/8 to a 1/4, so I could shorten the locking sleeve on the spindle to give me the backlash I want, the set screw on the locking bushing has to bury into the spindle to hold. I like having the handle only turning 30 degrees max before moving the Dynamic jaw support either in our out, I did better then that on the Columbians. I could have added a thrust bearing on the inside but will do this on better vises then the Columbians.

I can not wait till you show us your Prentiss # 58 vise and especially if you get it mounted on the stand you picked up. Guy's wait till you see this set up.

Looks like a Prentiss, and by counting blurs in the picture it would seem like 8" or *maybe* 9"... Seriously for that and the anvil for $500... WHY ARE YOU NOT THERE ALREADY?!?!?!?!

If you are willing to ship you could at minimum quadruple your money on that.
