Not sure if this falls in to the vintage line here, but I found this today picking up in my rafters.

Old carpenters box maybe?

I would look in top of chest left front and look for a date stamp or somewhere on chest. I never seen on like before with that badge.

Just picked this up at an Estate Sale Thursday night thought I'd share here in case you don't read the garage sale thread.

That is awesome. I love that logo. I'm fairly certain it is not stamped and should be a early to mid 40's production box. What is the base use it is setting on? IIRC the bottom box to that one should have a folding cover. I'll dig out my old catalog scans in a few.

It's kind of funny in a way (IMHO) tool box makers really seemed to all change at the same time.

Drawer slides were added in the early 40's
Production date stamps were added in the mid to late 50's
Integral, full length drawer pulls replaced individual twin pulls in the mid 50's.

There are a number of exceptions to these facts, but overall trends the brands did quite a bit at the same time. Competitive edge? :dunno:

What a great bunch of boxes. I'm going to go read the last 50 pages now. Just thought I'd post up this old darling I picked up last week. I think it's the oldest one I have. The sticker says Snap-On but it may be a Waterloo from what I've read so far. I just need to find the missing drawer. If anyone knows where to find one or has a spare laying around please let me know. Condition is unimportant as long as the handle matches. I definitely need to take pictures of my other boxes and start figuring out how old they are.

Interesting.... Back then was companies making their own or was there only few manufactures and then put different company names on them?

I took a pic of the box I found today (which I made usable) with some older tools I found in the garage as well. I thought it was neat.

Depends on the company; but majority of them were doing what many do today. There are really only a handful of makers, others just put their names on them. From a business sense it makes sense as the equipment and tooling is pretty specific. I don't recall off hand exactly made the late 30's, early 40's craftsman boxes. I have it saved somewhere :headscrat. In the late 40's a company out of chicago made them for craftsman, then in the 60/70's waterloo took over.

The big ones were (I think)
Indestro
MBC
Chicago company?
Waterloo
......

Here's an old Gerstner I've had for a long time, bought it from the original owner think he said it was bought in 1953. Think I paid 125 for it full of Lufkin tools that I still use everyday.

I took a quick picture of a bunch of my boxes today. Just a teas really since they are all stacked, racked and packed as well as done on my old cell phone.

Kennedy's
Starret's (Made by Kennedy)
Task Master (English Made)
K&D
MAC
Snap On
Assorted English ones I can't remember the names of.

Some day I'll have a nice big garage to spread them all out and use them again.

Beat, it has the Nekkid lady, so early in the Proto years,

can you show a pic of the slides?

i can later(it took awhile just to post these pix)
it doesnt have slides at all. it has a guide or rail built into the sides of the cabinet. theres a roller bearing on the track and on the drawer.
the drawers lift out easy like an old file cabinet
the roll out smooth and set nicely still in the closed position.

That sounds like the Pressteel roller slides. Pressteel was the OEM for Plvmb/Proto Boxes for many years. I also have a mid fifties Craftsman roller that also used the Pressteel rollers, so I'm 99% certain they also made that one. that Craftsman roller was "Sears Best" for the era, with 5 drawers full depth of the roller. No bottom "garage".

So I have anything EXCEPT the Plvmb or Proto... :dunno:

That's one I couldn't think of earlier. Do you know if Presssteel made top boxes for Craftsman and the like or mostly just bottom boxes with their unique roller bearing setup?

Very cool, congrats man  I've never seen pics of one like that before. I've seen them with a door on the bottom, guess this one is later, say mid to late 50's? :dunno: What do the drawer bottoms look like?

I don't consider this "vintage" since I'm older than the box is - but here's the $20 early 80's (before they started turning to ****) Craftsman roller I picked up at the flea market this morning.

Nice toolmobile! As others have suggested I would guess early to mid 50's? Enjoy it in good health! I'm loving my toolmobile, the only problem I'm having with mine is the ever present urge to keep finding more vintage proto and Plomb tools to fill it with! :shocking:

Dennis Leigh Henry, that Craftsman perforated tool tray is probably from the late 60's early 70's. I have 1 that I got used when I started working in '72. The manufacturing company I worked for gave 1 to any mechanic who wanted 1 to carry their tools around the shop from machine to machine. Before they started buying those, the maintainence carpenters made wooden ones as required.

Interesting…..

I looked at the box below on saturday and could not figure out exactly what it was. The interior blue color appears to be original. The exterior has been repainted. I also did not recognize that particular CM badge and you can see holes below it from something else. Seller wants $85 for the box and contents…

That one is a bit earlier than Alinc's. It was the largest, then became the mid size box. That one is a carry over from the late 30's box which did not have drawer slides, but otherwise identical construction. I'd guess very early 40's. From what I have seen they are not very valuable, unless you really like that one I think I might pass. Looks like a mix of old and new tools, with HF screwdrivers. At least the badge is there.

Kennedy made all of there own boxes. My dad has one with the exact handles on it, its from the middle 60's, it still has the original Kennedy Kits sticker in it. If I am correct the boxes were made at the plant on Sycamore Street in Van Wert, Ohio

I would love to have a box similar to those made be New Britain. I almost bought a Blackhawk from when they were own by New Britain. It was an early 70's box, all ball bearing slides, but couldn't afford it at the time.

Pretty old thread I realize; I am looking for a top box like the one you have a photo in on this thread. It's been quite a while and I wonder if you possibly still have it for sale.

Regards,

Here is a rattle can resto of a early 70's kennedy I bought off one of those roadside junk dealers, it was really rough but for $25 bucks and several hours work I'm happy with it.
