Hello I am new to this site and had a question. My father recently passed this year and then we had a house fire a few months ago so I'm in the process of cleaning out his garage. I have a craftsman tool chest I'm looking to sell but have no clue what its worth. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks for any help you can provide. If this isnt in the right place please let me know where to post this.

It can depend on specifics. If those are ball bearing drawers you could be looking at $150, if those are cheaper roller drawers $100. You can get $100 for the "set" minimum.

A similar set with BB drawers sells new in the store for $100.

Being older, it may be built a little heavier than the newer set (which is pretty light duty) but I would still say $100 at the most. I sold a similar bottom cabinet on craigslist for $50 recently.

Sorry to hear about your father and the fire.

XRT: the guys are all talking an empty tool box and if you can post a few pictures of the drawers open and of the slides on the sides we can give you a bit more information. We do get asked to price tools and stuff quite a bit and then the seller puts on Ebay or Craigs and it gets a bit old, but i'm sorry to hear about your loss both with your dad passing and the fire so here's my 2 cents.

are you planning on selling the tools too or keeping them? if you are planning on selling and don't have any idea then a few details on what they are and a few more pictures would help us help you. by the way i sold a 3 tier Craftsman box like that for $130 a few months ago on Craigs, but they are all a bit different especially if its an older better built one.

welcome to GJ and we hope you stick around to learn maybe a thing or two and also teach us what you know.

There are tools inside mostly craftsman. A drawer with all sockets, one with pliers, wrenches.

Heres a picture of one of the drawers

If it was my father's toolchest I would do everything in my power to hold on to it instead of selling it for a song.

There are memory's in their and a monument to a hard working man. That set is small enough to fit in a closet apartment. You should honor your father b holding on to the chest and the tools and maybe passing it on to your son one day.

Just my 2 cents.

XRT: i agree with Chicane that you should store that someplace safe and you'll be happy you did as the years pass. also in the meantime a tool inside it might come in handy to fix something and you can thank Dad when you use it.

if you are not sure what some of the tools are or how to use them i bet there are hundreds of posts and threads on Garage Journal where you can learn pretty quickly.

i'm starting to clean out my Dad's old tools now while he is still around and even though he hasn't used a lot of them for years since he is in his 80's now he has a story about some of them. also some of them are his dad's and grand dad's so you might have a few of those inside that box too.

good luck

Take some good pics of box and contents, put it on Craigslist for ~$150 and see what people offer, because people will always offer. The tools inside are what are going to be the selling point. No offense to you or your father but those are one of the most flimsy boxes craftsman ever produced not much value in them alone.

Make room for it. Use it. There's nothing wrong with those until you spend about a year on this website and I guarantee you'll need a bigger box. Ask me how I know this.?

If you're including tools, that throws out the $100 prices above. I'd say the box alone is worth $80-100. The tools would probably double the price, depending on what is there.

How valuable are they to you? Do you need them? Will you regret selling them? They were your father's tools...keep them..use them while you can..pass them down. Used tools don't usually sell for much, they are probably worth more to you to keep...don't make any hasty decisions on this. Sorry to hear about your father, and the fire.

A bottom of the line Craftsman box that a GJ member has is worth $100, but a Snap-On roll cab that an unknown guy on CraigsList is selling is only worth $500 or so (I see it claimed all the time on here)? I'm not sure I see the relative value correlation - if you said "I would only pay $20 for that" it would be more in line.

List it for 100 in hopes to get 75-80 for it

I would say the same thing and hope for 70 for just the box. You'll likely get that if you shine it up nice.

I'd cherry pick the tools you think are "valuable" and keep them in a box for later. Some stuff you just can't replace. Might be a philips screwdriver, might be an adjustable wrench, just don't get rid of inherited tools for pennies on the dollar when you can't replace some memories.

Good luck!
