while replacing the vinyl siding on the front of my house, i came across a plug that needs replacing / redoing,,,,, it is a 20amp "hospital grade" with a green dot on the front, it was just used as a outside receptable with no weatherproof cover,,,,, yes! i know that is wrong that's why i am replacing it with a weatherproof box, **** here's the kicker,,,,, the way it is wired has me stumped, i think the P.O. used just any wire he had left over, he had the black wire on the brass side - RED wire on the silver side - and the white wire on the ground screw, is this something special? i am thinking that i will go inside and find out where the wire goes and replace it with the traditional blk, white, green, i have never seen this wiring setup before IS IT SOMETHING SPECIAL ????????

Sounds like 12/3 romex without ground. The red should be phase taped white and the white pbase taped green to identify them properly. You also dont need a hospital grade recept. It should however be a gfi with an inuse cover to meet code.

If it were me id replace with a gfi and a flip cover.

IIRC, the green dot indicates an isolated ground recep. Does not mean that is how it is installed / wired.

Edit: Damn memory flakes again. I googled after I posted (assbackwards, right?).

The green dot just means Hospital Grade. The IGR indicator is an orange marking (triangle, I think).

Sorry for the quick and erroneous posting.

Green dot is isolated ground like said above, and it's prob a 12/3 bx or romex with ground cut off. Guy just used whatever he had. Just replace it the same way it came off but tape wires the right colors, no sense in going crazy and rewiring it because of that, unless you know where other end is.

Is it even fed with 120 instead of 240?

This would be the first thing to check. It could be a ghetto rigged setup to provide 240v to an RV parked outside or even some kind of way to hook up a small generator.

Hospital Grade & Isolated Ground are two different beasts, the green dot means only that it's hospital grade, tested to a much higher standard then residential grade by UL, & receptacles in health care facilities are required to be tested annually for tension & for less then 4 Oz they fail & are required to be replaced, hospital grade are top of the line devices the most common ones cost from $7 to $20 each.

A isolated ground device is a orange triangle, not a green dot.
