Lighting in your garage.

Hello my name is Ryan and I am posting on here to look for problems that people have with lighting in their garage. Not enough electrical outlets, lights are not accesible enough in the garage environment, they're to bright, not bright enough, not direct enough... ETC. any issues with lighting in a garage setting would be greatly appreciated. I am in an Art school for product design and am looking for input from individuals who have had any issues with garage lighting. I am working on a project to create a new and improved way of lighting in the garage. Thanks any input is greatly appreciated.

Hi my name is Ryan I live in Detroit MI and go to school at College for Creative Studies i am looking for input from anyone on garage lighting and any problems they have. I am an art student and am looking for issues to correct due to garage lighting, such as accessibility, mobility, bright lights, not bright enough pretty much anything. Any input would be appreciated. I am in the product design department looking to improve garage lighting. Thanks any problems that anyone has will be noted and put to use.

The biggest problem most people have is shadows caused by not enough light source and lack of proper reflectors.

cold weather affects ones choice of light fixture or ballast in the fixture, some of us don't keep the garage heated all the time or not at all so some florescent fixture just will not turn on in the cold or burn out quickly.

garage lighting on the ceiling is mainly general lighting, most work stations in the garage such as a work bench with have specific task mounted lighting at that location either on the ceiling/wall or on the bench/deck or what have you.

Some people pick their fixtures based not only on how bright the fixture is but how much energy does it use in watts. I seen a post in here about someone being concerned about how much heat the fixture gives off.

Also if someone has a paint booth and want to put light in it, special explosion proof fixture might be needed.

Here are the issues I'm now facing with planning my garage, in no particular order:
1. General vs. task lighting. Task lighting may be in any area of the garage, not simply
the workshop/workbench area. Could be under the car.
2. Temperature. Garages fluctuate widely, from below 0 to above 100. What lights work in all situations.
3. Grime, condensation, dust, etc. Garages have a lot of stuff flying around
4. Cost. Many of us work in the garage because we cannot afford to have someone else do it, or are regular grunts with paychecks to match.
5. Energy use. Not so much a cost thing, but we are running our electricity off subpanels and only have a few spots and amps available.

Yes I've noticed a lot of garages have hanging lights. I was thinking of making a hanging light that will also be used for storage, and will be able to take part of it off of the hanging fixture that is wireless, cause i know garages can get a little cramped and mobility and organization is a big thing, also hands free. and yes heat and wattage is a big thing i will pay attention to. Also direct lighting towards a vehicle or something that is to big for a work bench i want to be able to just pull it down from the hanging light fixture. How does this sound. thanks again for the posts I need to do a lot of research and more input from people is always best. I will post pictures of my sketches soon to keep you guys interested.. Again I appreciate it.

One could also count RF noise as an issue, and even LEDs generate noise - apparently enough to clobber the open transmit/receive function.

I still use 2 drop lights for some of my work, as they are the easiest to get light to the area I need. These are the old fashioned drop cord on a reel, with a light at the end.

Would be nice to see that design updated.
