Picked up this gem on craigslist just want to make sure I didn't screwed. Also anybody know reasonable way to slow this beast down to make it more conducive to drilling metal. I was thinking a cheap single phase VFD suggestions ?

Yeah he wanted 200 for it and came down to 100 really easy. It needs knobs for feed quill and one hand but seems complete and functional otherwise.

Seriously, you have to ask?

Is it 3ph or single phase?

No I don't need to ask but it seems to be thing to do show the great scores. I know I see a lot on here I wish where in my area.

Single phase 120

Are there various pulleys under the top cover? Should be able to change speeds moving the belt?

300 to 3700 If I recall correctly.

I'd leave it alone then.

If he is regularly using it with a 4" hole saw then he bought the wrong machine. If he does it every now and then, a chip clearing hole, an oil can and peck drilling at 300 RPM should be fine.

I have that sabe drill press and I paid like $70 or $80 for it but yours is in way better shape.

I am adding a VFD to mine so I can run it on 110v and so I can get the speed way down when I need it
VFD was $130 and then tax and shipping sp right about $150 total

That is a beautiful drill press. $100 is a steal! I see them on CL local for $250-350, never in that kind of shape. 300 rpms is a good speed for drilling steel. I have used a Rockwell just like that, it was a great machine.

Is there two different speed ratings ? It appears in the second picure of the speed dial, it shows, one set in the black and another in the white .

To some people, the switch is worth almost what you paid for the drill press so it was a good score.

Yes, one is for a standard 1725rpm motor, the other (lower) scale is for a 1140rpm motor input.

That's a very nice drill press. As you may know, the variable speed system is a Reeve's drive. If you (or someone who used to own it) don't move the speed setting and run it long enough, the belt will wear a groove in the cone. Worn Reeves drives can also get noisy. To ward against this, it's a good idea to adjust the speed through the full range each day you use the drill (even if you end up using the same speed as when you started, or use a VFD to change speeds for drilling).

Thanks catalytic I was unaware. Are there any other issues I should be aware of I'm new to this old of a drill press. I know there good quality machines and last forever when taken care of but know nothing else about them.

Don't ever adjust the speed handle when the motor isn't running.
