Balane: i'm not certain, but maybe the paint fumes are getting to you. first Martha Stewart pictures and now a Wilton with a race car paint job. i think that is still listed for sale so again on the our favorite free shopping site. nice work in any case AGAIN.

since you've taken more pins holding vise nuts out i'm curious if it matters if you go from below or above to remove them. Jason does it one way and i do it another and i think i remember you hitting them out from underneath. so which way works best or is it a case by case to decide which way?

I have no set way to drive the nut keeper pins out, I'll choose whatever looks easiest. In most situations, I would say, that's driving them out from the underside, upwards, with a punch.

Edit: And let me add that I can't get Polka Dots out of my mind.

i'm tempted to list a vise for cheap just to get you out of the garage and have you pick it up in Wenatchee at a friend's house to get you some fresh air. you are too funny and i'm hoping it's not just the paint fumes getting to you.

now back to pins for one last question to help some of the guys that never have taken a vise apart. have you ever blown our or cracked the casting around the pin's hole when taking one out or putting one in? i haven't yet, but was thinking on some of the really old vises of making a sleeve or using a socket to put around the pins to keep that from happening.

The pin should only be mild steel at most. It's likely to distort before the cast would crack, though don't take that as gospel. I've always tapped them out from the underneath into the housing, never from above.

Jason: I've always put a punch just slightly smaller than the pin on the underside and drove the pin up because that is usually the shortest distance. also because the top of the old pins are sometimes bent in to the vise nut. is this wrong?

I don't know if it was crud or what in the picture, but it looked like the bottom of the pin was all mushed out... Usually most are up in there a little so yeah, you can punch them out from underneath. I usually just go whichever way looks easiest.

Re: Wilton C1 & Reed 205R

The Wilton is stamped 46 on the slide and a small trace of the
"five year" sticker is on the rear of the static. :bounce:

That's a pair to be jealous of for sure:thumbup: nice finds!

Another small update on the 5198 for today. With the heat wave has broken and my spirits refreshed by the regional Grainger sales lady coming by to drop off some samples and say hi, I made some more headway on the vise

Today I smoothed out the striking area and filled in a 1/2" hole made to accept a hardy cutter. There are some small pinholes but overall I think it came out nice enough

BC, looking good. What type of weld did you use?

72: nice pair of vises and let me put my guess in on the Reed as a 203 because pretty positive you would have had a bigger write up for a 208. also nice score on the Wilton C1 which I think is about as good a homeowner vise as most anybody would need.

Jason: i thought you were doing something different on removing the pins if you were hitting them down and glad you explained your reasoning.

Fretters: thanks again for your wisdom

Balane: OMG and only time will tell when you get those sold if we will see that color combo again. do you want me to pick up boxes of spray paint when i get a chance to give you or do you still have plenty of choices? quick question. do all the machinist Wiltons not have a dust cover that you know of?

BC: even though it's a little at a time thanks for sharing and care to explain how you filled the hole?

Thanks but I've got about six boxes of paint right now and pass on it all the time these days.

Some Tradesman vises shipped without dust caps but most of them came with one. If you're asking about the actual Machinist model of Vise from Wilton then I don't have any idea.

I just fired up my Hobart wire feed gun and laid a circular bead inside the hole. Before that it was ground out and preheated with a torch

I've heard of people using nickel rod to do repairs but .35 wire seems to do just fine for small spot repairs in my book

Drives, a 208 would have been nice for sure!
But it's a 205R ,five inch wide jaws.

donmillerx, It is a Polish vise, Bison-Bial. It probably has a rear moving jaw ? and that is a design used by several european companies.

I couldn't get the picture from Photobucket earlier

Just picked up an old vise with this insignia, any ideas?
Thanks!

To be anally exact, FPU = Fabryka Przyrzadow i Uchwytow AKA Bison-BIAL

A polish made vise, rear jaw rides on ways with an adjustable gib. Does yours have the High-Test decal?

If you don't want it... Buy it and throw it up on eBay and make some money...

http://albany.craigslist.org/tls/4666968803.html

Someone please buy this so i dont have to! Columbian 204 1/2 on a stand $35.00 near Albany, NY

$35.00!!!

I think the 6" is like 65-70lbs... Yorks are probably more like Tradesman (or lighter)...

Joe, what is the weight of your 6" York? Is it close to a 6" Wilton Machinist or C3, or lighter like a Tradesman?

Says Yost 34C on eBay cheap right now... Ends: Sep 19, 2014 20:51:02 PDT (a little over a day as of this post)...

The pictures appear to actually be a 206, I don't see the pipe jaws... Still that is a 6" vise and weights 118 lbs... Might want to contact seller to confirm model #...

Does not have the swivel base, but still, only $59 on eBay right now... PICKUP ONLY - Lebanon, Tennessee.... It does have 3-hole static mounting.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/380999855478

Hopefully someone is close by... Usually Yost vises don't get much bidding action on eBay.

I have no relation to the seller or anything, it's just a cheap vise that probably will go for a very low price. I wish I was closer, I would buy it if I could pick it up.

Weight is 62 lbs exactly.

As to the vise I posted, this is supposed to be a hobby. This week I bought a Parker 104, York 150mm bench, Emmert 4a. I was hoping there was a GJ guy who would snap it up. You can still buy that vise new. Plus my neighbor is selling his Kennedy and a Gestner (sp?) Toolboxes $200 for both...

Looks nice... Late model Reed with some copper jaws.... 104-S ??? Keep us updated, hope you grab it!

I decided to pass on it. The guy has multiple vises and is selling them for a decent price. He had a REED 206R that I tried to get off of him. He said he will need to obtain another large vise before he can sell that (he uses it). Basically I might have found myself a little vise dealer! Hell I already got a YOST off him for a killer deal.

Thanks, good to know. I see the occasional York in ads locally, if I see a 6", might be worth the drive. Joe, I hope you post some pics when you are finished restoring it.

FMC you wont believe it but the York is GONE. One of the guys who bought a few of my vises heard about it and wants to restore it. It is in really excellent condition...so it found a new home. He already had the 75mm York and was rabid for this one plus he offered $175 + shipping. I made him VERY happy and now I can make KM Scott happy by spending oodles of cash at his shop!

My full focus is on the Emmert vise and my joy in restoring that one is...well it is making me giddy! My wife said that I love the Emmert more than I love her. I said it is an affair and that it will end and come back to her. By the way, the day I got the Emmert my wife of 31 years had come home an hour early to 'surprise' me, if you get my drift. I gotta tell you she wasn't very happy when I told her we had to go pick up a vise...And you guys don't judge me, I've had a vise sold out from under me more than once.:bitchslap
