Three stops in the last couple days including a farm auction where the passed away gentleman was a small engine mechanic and a hoarder with lots of space.
First stop netted a Blackhawk flex ratchet,and SK ratchet,Craftsman drill index and a Blu-Mol hole saw kit for $21:






Next stop netted me a MAC drill index/holder,$25, that I believe was on the truck/for the dealer to fill indexes from :

The farm/estate auction netted me the following:
Sockets and extensions from Proto,SK,Snap ON and Craftsman.
Screwdrivers/Nutdrivers from Snap On ,Craftsman and others.
I also got a Craftsman ratchet adapter for a breaker bar, a stud remover,Proto arc joint pliers, a bunch of NOS Besley taps,A Craftsman Crowntop toolbox,the 8 drawer file cabinet, the art deco steel worktable/desk and a 8 piece silver champagne set (not pictured but BNIB) for $147.50 total . I sold $10 worth or some of the hardware in the file cabinet,easily have 100 lbs of scrap nuts,bolts etc. and more Mag-Lite bulbs than I could ever use. Please PM if you need bulbs. I also hauled a couple drill presses home for others and made $20 knocking my net cost down to $117.50 and plan to sell the SO ratcheting driver ( along with the other tools)to recoup even more.

Did quite a bit better than I expected to today. It seemed like everyone went out of their way to have sales without tools. The main event, an annual flea market, never produced much in the past, but it was still the best prospect to start the day:


Empty Proto "Professional Tools" socket set box, 3 Petersen Vise Grips in a roll, Plomb 1/2" drive ratchet (seldom see Plomb around here, yet I've found 2 of these this summer ), SO scaffolding ratchet, 1/2" and 13mm MAC distributor wrenches, SK Crowfoot set, SK needlenose, a Craftsman 'Powr-Panl' (with what's left of its original box and instructions), Crown saw blade set, Diamond fencing pliers and vise grips.

Next stop: Socket Heaven! Got two totes filled with sockets for $12 total. Lots of foreign rusty **** (Taiwan, ChiCom, Japan, Sri Lanka). But there was a bunch of USA-made as well.

pic 6: big surprise when I unloaded the totes, one was a rusty Porta-Cable box that is long gone, the other is actually a decent condition Kennedy tool tote with a felt bottom. I'll keep the latter as a bonus!

Pretty slow weekend. A Bullwinkle blade Emerson, a giant switch from Frankenstein's laboratory, Klein dikes that look brand new except for owners initials, a Mitutoyo caliper and miniature pry bar. (around $30 for everything)

Two adjacent barn sales yesterday. Not a lot of tools but I did find a few older ones at the second barn. Too bad he didn't have more to pick through cause his pricing was cheap.
Barn sale #1, from the free table. A like new 110V Video light, some extra lens covers and a misc wall wart that can always be used for things with compatible voltage needs. A camera attachment handle and some garden hose washers.


Barn sale #2, Assorted Indestro, Barcalo, Dunlap and Billings hand wrenches. A decent shape Auto Wrench and a small "Master Wrench". An old looking spark plug tool, a couple small tap handles and a metal storage box. All for $4.50


Also not pictured but from Barn #1 an old rusty kids wagon for $5. It may become a future project or get sent down the line.

4 inch jaw on my red Starrett. Nice little vise, good for a lot of things but with me...maybe I'll sharpen a few mower blades, not much...a good third hand. I have no real need for a 200 lb. vise but I cheer those that have them.

Wrapping yesterday's haul, this is from the final stop, the one where I got the machinist's toolbox. The box was empty, but I found some other stuff:

Running diagonally through the picture is a very long Matco screwdriver. I forgot to actually measure it, but I'd guess 24". At upper left is a little-used Craftsman crown punch set in its pouch, 3 snap-ring pliers, a Huot drill index full of reamers, a Craftsman push drill, set of Lufkin radius gauges, Starrett micrometer, 2 pair of Snap-On/Vacuum Grip pliers, Channellock needlenose, Utica Button's pattern pliers, two pair of Kraueter pliers, a Craftsman offset screwdriver, a lighted microscope with a scale (it goes in the black box at lower right), a few pieces, and a Craftsman Underline center finder.

The GF never went to an estate sale with me before. Shocked me today when she woke up & said she wanted to check out some sales. Being Sunday we were only able to hit one in the area. Wasn't much left but she has a good eye and found a few things she needed cheap. I almost skipped the attic but went up and oddly found a SO screwdriver in a box of stuff.

Once again, I go away for the weekend and you guys kill it.


This actually started out as a kind of depressing/sad weekend for me. I had to go north to close up my camp and house for the winter. So, no sales for me.

I had seen a few very tempting ads for sales that I wanted to go to, and spent the 5hr drive agonizing over what I was missing. Closing the properties isn't that difficult, but takes time and it's sad to know that I won't be going up until the next spring. I hits me hardest as I start to drain the pipes at the camp, that's when my eyesight starts to get blurry.

What does this have to do with tools, you ask. Well ...........

On the way up I saw a one day Estate Sale that I had to pass because of time (more depressing thoughts), but I was good and soldiered on.

On the way back south Sunday afternoon, as I was indulging my sad thoughts, I saw that the "Saturday Only" signs had a "Sunday" tag over them. The only time I've gone from 75mph (in a 50 zone) to 0 in a shorter time is when dodging Moose in the road.

A gentleman who had a lumber truck repair garage had passed away, and the family was liquidating the property. This is one of those places where the bushes are filled with school busses (12 + an ambulance, a box truck, a few trailers, and 2 containers) just to store "a few things". All packed to the gills. So, I went into the shop to nose around. I knew that I couldn't buy much, my truck was full and I hadn't taken my trailer. So I decided to be choosy. This was a working shop, everything had a layer of grease and grime on it from actually being used. I was in heaven. I was hoping to find an arbor press and maybe a vise or two, but alas no luck. I did walk out with :

a Dunlap #115.7269 1/3hp 1750rpm motor w/arbor adaptors (date code C1_49)
________It works, but needs a going over.
a Craftsman Crown Top short hip toolbox (metal handle)
a Cman 1/4"dr breaker bar =V= (rusty)
a Blackhawk #34830 3/8"dr Torque Wrench (only 10" long)
and a 24" Billings #47 2"-2 3/16" DOE wrench (wall art) that weights 11lbs !

All for only $26. I gladly paid without any dickering.


And then, I was told that there was more out back and that I could go into the buses. I almost started to cry again.

I was (am) on a tight budget, and I'm running out of room to store (hide) things, so I only bought one more item .....................................

......................... After digging through the buses and more than a few piles, I spotted a tarp on the side of one of the containers, covering more stuff. I lifted the corner of the tarp and the clouds parted, a ray of sunshine illuminated the pile, and a chorus of angels sang Hussana. There before me, was ..............


............... A Craftsman alien head planer !


I asked how much she wanted, and she said $15 !!!!
(I try to never argue with a widow)
I couldn't pull the money out fast enough.

It's model #103.1801 and has both the Long-C Logo (on the ball bering badge) and the Heritage Logo (on the base). It is hard to tell (under the rust and grime), but the original color is the old Craftsman Blue. Not the industrial grey that I've seen before. The table raising gear is frozen (I think it's the rust on the fine threads), but the blade spindle turns freely.

I don't really need a 6" planer, but this will make a good resto project when I can get to it. Besides, it's just cool as hell !



All in all, a lousy weekend tuned out not to be so bad.

I should add that before finding the sale, and before leaving my camp, I took a quick walk in the woods to say goodbye. When I was a kid these woods were full of old wrecked and abandoned cars and parts. It was common to see trees growing out of Model A's and T's that had been used to run Rum and Whiskey over the border during prohibition (newer production models took their time to make it that far into the woods).

They were all cleared out for scrap years ago when my Uncle built his house there, but there's still a little rust in the bushes if you look hard enough. I stumbled onto what I think is an old tractor grill and decided to console myself my bringing it home to hang on the wall of the garage.

Lots of suckage coming from the New England area!!! To bad all those cars got cleared out, I am sure there was some pretty cool stuff in there Great find on the tractor grille and the alien head planer. That thing is so cool.

St. Gabe's is once a year. It's at Hubertus Road (I think) and 164. This is the best luck I've had there. Maxwell Street Days in Cedarburg is 4 times a year, and usually pretty good. Next weekend is a Thresheree in Richfield that sounds interesting (don't know if there are any vendors). I always look forward to the Jefferson swap meets in late April and late September.

Last week I noticed a sign for a neighborhood yard sale around the corner from me. It was in an area with a lot of roads but only 2 main ways in/out so I thought it might have some potential. Safe to say that it was mostly baby clothes and knick knacks. I ran across an elderly couple that had their garage open so I asked if they had any tools for sale. She let me look around and offered me some older drills and palm sanders that she noticed, but all I came out with was below. She wanted .50 but I gave her $1.

The only other stop was on my way out when I noticed the Radio Flyer wagon. It had a pile of carpet in it when I drove it, but it was empty so I figured I'd stop and check it out. I need the wheels and tires for another project that I have in the waits. $5 got me the rusted out wagon.

After I loaded it in the car the owner of the house yelled, "Let me know if you need any tools!" Jeez, I forgot to even ask about that. The daughter let me in the garage that hadn't been touched since before that father passed away 2 years ago and let me make a pile of things I wanted to buy.

There wasn't an extravagant amount of tools to go through, but the father was a metallurgist and into scrap metal and lead molding so there were some interesting things here and there. I offered my help when they are ready to sell off the garage contents since they seem a little bit overwelmed by all of the stuff. I was able to get the following:

A good shape Reed 103
Some 1/4" Cman sockets and an empty metal socket box
Misc wrenches including a Snappy
Matco/Knipex diagonal cutters
Pin vise
Rubber hammer
Craftsman long #2
Battery terminal pliers
Cman 1/4" driver
A file (cause you can never have enough different shaped files)
and best of all a copy of C.M. Hoke's Testing Precious Metals

The daughter was happy to see that I found a book in the garage that interested me. I've actually been keeping an eye out for this book for a while now. I offered $30 for all and they accepted. I also told them that they are free to call or email me with any questions about anything that they come across.

Thanks to Jerry's(ShadowRulez) good CL surfing and my texting/emailing ability we were able to obtain a nice find on CL
7 ,yep 7 brand new Matco ratchets for $100!!
Guy works/worked for a division of Danaher and decided to sell off some of his excess tooling. I was able to meet up with him after work today and bring some chrome goodies home.Sadly they are the 36 tooth configuration but they are brand new!!

Got all this from an estate sale down the street. Plvmb 1/2 speed bar and misc 1/2 drive plvmb sockets. They where scattered around the garage but I would think they probably all came from the same set. There are some missing sockets so if you guys have misc plvmb sockets for sale let me know.



The vice grip spring is broken so if someone has an extra I would be interested in it! Got this whole lot for about $8 IIRC.

I got this socket in the mix. It is a 3/4 6 point and has some odd marks that I cant really make out. Anyone know the brand??

Also stopped by the habitat for humanity and got the snappy driver , flex flat head and the proto pliers for less than $5. Seemed like a good deal. The proto snap ring pliers say proto on them and also the companies name that made them. I know they are old but they are not proto Los Angeles. Any one know how old they are?

General hardware no.55 and plomb wf-8 $2

The wf-8 is missing a spring but looks like it had a rebuild kit put in it at some point because the teeth look new. Also it is 1/4" drive and not 9/32" like it should be. My best guess is someone lost the spring when installing a wf-8s rebuild kit. Then put it back together dry. The screw is useable but needs to be replaced as well.

In case you or anyone else didn't know, the deal in the middle is a printer's line gauge, commonly known as a "pica pole". We used it in the old hot metal days, but I still used one all the time (perhaps somewhat as my "Linus' security blanket"?) in my many years in computer pre-press long after hot metal went away.

that's the skate key.
way back when roller skates were metal (wheels and body) and the were adjustable to fit the size shoe you wore.
strapped right to your tennies.
that was the tool to adjust 'em.
those skates were awful to ride and noisey.
