Was organizing some sockets I've gotten from various estate sales and noticed I have a 25/32 socket. When would a socket like this be necessary. any specific applications?

I bought a large number of wrenches from CL. When cleaning them up I noticed a 25/32" among them. I thought it was odd, but was glad to have something I have never seen/owned, as I'm a firm believer in "better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it."

A few weeks later I couldn't find a wrench to fit a particular bolt on a piece of old farm equipment. As you can guess, I needed that wrench. 50+ years of neither needing nor having one, then I get one and need it a few weeks later.

I had to replace my 1/2" drive shallow set a few ago and I bought mostly SO on Ebay and garage sales. I just happen to find a bunch of / 32 sockets to fill in the set. I don't use them very often , but it's nice to have them when you need them.

I'm willing to bet that it is a 21/32.

I have a whole bunch of those oddball sockets that I have picked up at yard sales. I only seem to find them in 1/2" drive though.

Its one of the older 'manufacturers standard' hex fastener sizes, along with 13/32, 15/32, 17/32, 19/32, 29/32, and 1-3/16.

That standard co-existed along with "USS', or 'United States Standard', or 'NC' for National Coarse", and 'SAE' or 'Society of Automotive Engineers' 'standard fine thread', also called 'NF' for 'national fine' or 'AF' for 'American Fine', which were far more commonly used.

Those odd 32nds. sizes, except 11/32 for #8 machine screws, were generally obsoleted by order of the War Production Board, in 1942, to simplify fastener interchange, and simplify the tooling for equipment maintenence.

The 21/32 is used for model A Ford rod cap nuts, and was seldom used elsewhere. .

The 19/32 and 25/32 are fairly common 'old standard' sizes which are often found on many varieties of older equipment. Some manufacturers persisted in using those even though the 1950's.

(people who work on a wide variety of older equipment have to live in 'wrench, tap, and die hell', having to have all those 32nds, Whitworth/BSF, and multiple older metric standards....for example, the carbie jet threads on model A Ford were French Zenith design, an uncommon metric standard)

cheers

Carla

I was told the 32nd sizes were the oldtimers way of dealing with the occasional metric. A 25/52 is about 19.84 mm. So, if the socket is a tad worn, it should fit on a 20mm nut.
I use 3/4 for 19mm without a thought, and a worn 5/8 (15.88mm) will slide right on to 16mm nuts.
