I just finished the last 700sq ft of my 1650sqft Shop floor project. The absolute best way to prepare your epoxy floor project is to diamond grind the floor first. I didn’t want to rent, so I bought the equipment below. Pictures show the results. I’ve had the other part of the shop completed for about a year now and it still looks new.

With all the questions here on floor prep I figured this should help with other DIY’ers

Notice how I can set and grind. I did this for about 20hrs at about 100sq/ft at a time. I’m not Arnold Schwarzenegger but not the Pillsbury dough boy either, it really was comfortable for me as I tried the “Knee pad way” and this did not cut it….

Maybe others can benefit from my experience…

Looks great. Must have been a lot of hard work, but the end results shows how nice you finish job came out. Nice job.

Wow! Awesome work. So a typical block of 100 square feet took you a little over an hour?

..what you see there.. (think 10 equal squares) .

First day 2 squares

second day 4 squares

Third day 4 squares

No dust and I really like the way I got to be "Up and Personal" with every square inch of my floor. I know it and repaired any areas that needed prep as required.

I didn't push it and took my time.

...no diamabrush.

I used a 7 inch Dewalt diamond disc. Hard grinding face disc.

Interesting; those hard-faced disks are really aggressive and can eat concrete up really quickly. I assume you ran it at a low, controllable RPM?

Looks like you used:

and

and

correct?

Are you happy with the vac by the way?

Thanks for posting this - interesting unique take on diamond grinding.

I used the DW4775 7 inch wheel and the DWE46170 dust shroud. Everything (very high quality fit) worth every penny not to have to jury rig something up.

Vacuum worked excellent with the variable speed suction. You can adjust the float of the grinding action with that. There was no dust created and I filled the Vac up twice to do 700 sq/ft.

I think the main takeaway with this thread is to show people you can effectively grind your floor with a hand grinder.

Also, I found you can be comfortable doing it with a seating stool and a loop on the grinder handle.

No variable speed used. I used the DW4517 grinder 4HP -8500RPM. You get used to it after about an hour of grinding. The optional top loop handle is the ticket here.
