Love the building. I am building a 40x50 7:12 pitch with attic trusses. Did you builder have any concern about the side walls carrying the load of the attic trusses once you have weight up there? My builder says I need to come back in a frame 2x4 walls in between the posts to carry the load. Did this topic ever come up during construction?

Airborne...I saw an ad in The Valley Trader for Tam Lapp Construction. They are based out of York PA. They specialize in pole buildings. I had intended to build it all myself, but for the price and time involved, it was cheaper to have them do it. They had a sub contractor named Stoney Ridge Construction put it up. 3 Amish guys in their early 20s. I've never seen 3 guys work as quick and efficiently. They worked 27 hours in 2 days and had it under roof with soffit and facia. Wall girts as well. The price was $3k less than the local contractor with a few extras even. I was thoroughly impressed. If you would happen to go with them let me get my name to you for a reference and they send me $100 :). All the timber clearing my dad and I did. Neighbor did the excavation. Dad and I did doors/windows /siding. We did all the concrete prep and had a local guy finish it. I will wire it w/ some help from my bro in law and cousin who are electricians. I plan to finish the interior w salvaged barn siding for the top 8' and salvaged tin (some rusty) the bottom 4'. I sell classic car parts and other antiques , so eventually there will be old car grills and signs on the walls.

Saliv8...glad to hear you are starting yours. The 1933 Ford is for sale...I plan to put it on eBay soon. 302 V8, C4 auto. It is going to pay for a good portion of my garage hopefully...that and my 28' enclosed trailer...hitting eBay soon too. I don't need it anymore now that I have my shop up. The 1968 Charger
R/T I've had for around 3 years. It's a numbers matching true
R/T and I don't ever plan on selling it. I buy and sell classics...usually 1 or 2 a year. My problem is that they always grow on me and I want to keep them all. Let me know the title of your build thread so I can follow it.

An Amish crew also built mine and what a sight to see. Very efficient and professional. Sounds very cool about all the cars! That r/t has got to be worth a fortune!

My build is done and it's titled DAN CAVE. Just uploaded the photos last night to the site. My mustang will be goin in it but I wish I had that 33 ford in it too!

I also checked w Stoneburner...had them write up two seperate ideas. This was $16,143 which was about $3k cheaper and included soffit and facia. Come take a look at it if you want. Check out Tam Lapp Construction...I highly recommend them.

Scott...that question did not come up in regards to building in walls...the original snow loads submitted to the county were not high enough... I contacted the contractor and they increased the snow load.

Saliv8... I will check out your build. The 33 is for sale by the way. It's going to help put a dent in the building costs. I am getting ready to list it on eBay in the next week or so. The Charger is my keeper...it's a numbers matching R/T. A solid driver but not perfect...that's how I like them. I'm not as afraid to drive them when they're not perfect to start. Let me know if you'd be interested in buying the 33...I'll get more pics and details for you.

No problem... I went to Front Royal to see a building by Tam Lapp Const. Prior to building. It was all I needed to see to go with them. I have a flexible schedule too so call anytime.

Looking good! Really interested in seeing how you insulate and finish it with the wood siding. Can't say I have seen that done before.

That looks great! Barns are so awesome. Some day I want to b&b the exterior of my pole barn.

Vintage,

Your barn is virtually identical to the one I have drafted in sketchup (sans the large overhead door). Nice to see it in reality.

A few questions..

What is the dimension of your rake board (aka "flying rafter") on the gable overhang and the eave board (where a gutter would mount)? Are these 1x6 or 1x8 perhaps?

Do you have a photo or two of the framing where the gable meets the eave/soffit prior to the steel skin going over it?

How big is the overhang?

6x6 posts on 8ft spacing?

What size are the two smaller garage doors?

I think you nailed the proportions of virtually everything on your design. It's really great looking. So I would like to compare with what I have spec'd out in sketchup.

Thanks,
-Kevin

I'll have to find the plans as I don't have a picture prior to it being covered. If I recall it was a 2x6 they used for gable and eave. I do know that the overhang is 12" all around. The small doors are 10' wide x 9' tall. Large door is 12'x10'. The posts are 6x6 and 8' on the rear wall. Spaced according to doorways on the front and about 10' on the gable ends. Like I said, if I can find the drawings, I will add the pictures of the designs. Let me know if you start to build so I can follow your progress!

Great thanks for posting. Yeah the trusses I have spec'd out use a 2x6 top cord. So with that and the 2x4 purlin laid flat, that gives me a 7" rake which which seems like it would look out of place. It would make my roof look "thick" in proportion to the size of the building if that makes sense.

I can solve this by doing a boxed return like you did where the eve meets the gable but I had planned on doing an open overhang. As stated, the proportions on your build look great so I thought I would inquire how it was done. I'll try to post a picture of my sketchup rendering. The similarity is amazing.

I always obsess over details before I pull the trigger on anything. It's a curse.

Thanks,
-Kevin

Thx Jesse...I need to get some new springs and shocks on the Charger. It's nice to have a nice place to work on it now. Garage doors are ordered and should be here n a few weeks.

The leaves are a little early...we haven't had any significant rain for weeks...I'm afraid the first windy day and a lot of them will be gone. It is still my favorite time of year!

FYI for those of you following this build I have a sweet time lapse video on YouTube of the initial build. Look up Tam Lapp time lapse pole barn and you should find it...also...a time lapse of the concrete slab pour under Crawfords concrete finishing time lapse. Just had a friend do an aerial video w a GoPro and quadcopter that I will add to YouTube eventually.
