All of this talk of big Prentiss' made me look on eBay. Here's a big one with a big price and what looks to be big problems. What did they do to this one? Weld in a slide? The good news is that the seller says that it is still in good shape. Whew!

Speaking of big. Welcome to the forum BigEarn and nice deal on that Yost.
there are definitely Prentiss vises worth $1600, but that is not one of them, not even close, I wouldn't give $200 for it with those condition issues in that size.

ZK and 95: the Prentiss 58 is close to 300 pounds as B100 can confirm because he shipped his to a lucky buyer last year.

I never weighed it by itself. On the pallet it was 325 lbs when it left Virginia and 350 when it arrived in Colorado. They must have more gravity out there. Here's two more pics. One with a Reed 103 1/2 and another with a nine year old who likes to get in the way when I take pictures.

Wrenchguy has had one sitting on his outside bench for a while and some day we'll see it after he finishes restoring it. i had his picture of the 58 next to a Rock Island 577 as a screensaver because the 577 weighs 150 pounds and as you can see it is dwarfed by the 58.

i'm betting the stand and that 58 weigh close to 600 pounds so that can of WD 40 should have a pretty sturdy base.

Jeremy: thanks for the thoughts.

Thanks to SweetD heres a brochure page he provided when i posted my acquisition of my prentiss 58. it weighs in at 275 lbs. cost $82.00.

Has anyone seen this 1 as a swiveler?

I haven't seen the swivel attachment for this model, but I have seen a number 98. It's the 8 1/2" chipping vise with a normal swivel. Looks like a giant version of the typical bulldog swivel vise.

b100,---I sure hope the new owner of that 58 appreciates what he's got.---That thing is so clean, good crisp lines, no dings that I can see, and not beat to H and back as most monsters are because most people assumed that's what they were made for.
Your a stronger man than I am.---If it were mine, I could only give it up at my estate sale.

Parker 87

I just picked up another 87.
On this one the pipe jaws mounting pins are located higher than on the other
two I have. And the pipe jaw in the dynamic can not be reversed.
is this an earlier version ?

Based on the swivel lock handle, I would say its an earlier version. Those are a pair of brutes.

Sweet Jesus, that's a big Prentiss!! I think I've seen it before but never that close. The condition is fantastic on that pig. I wonder what the previous owner said to himself to make him think he needed to buy a vise that large and then never use it

That blue Reed/craftsman looks...familiar:thumbup:

Drivesit,---The Reed 408 is another one of those mythical holy grails that were advertised like the 209, but no one has ever produced one.---Even Demo has been looking for one of those for years.---If he can't find one, it doesn't look good.
If b100 is in the ballpark on the Hollands 48, that would bring it in at 330 to 340 lbs.---Can you imagine a 335 lb. swivel jaw.---But again we're talking legend.

VA: i was sure you had that one. i'm betting you have a 406 which would be a mighty nice swiveler and maybe a bit easier to handle and if not that Starrett 326 is one of the nicest ones to own.

well maybe a member on another forum has a 408 or 409 and doesn't want us trying to talk him out of it. hopefully it is being used with some care and respect. of course i'd be happy with any old 8 inch vise if it wasn't abused and worked like it should. in my searching yesterday i ran across one of our members that posted pictures of his 109 a couple years ago. he hasn't posted much of anything since then so maybe this will get him to give us a few more pictures if he shined it up since he last posted a picture.

so does the 109 tip the scales over 300 pounds?

My Rock Island 951, born in 1951, recently restored to working condition, would have been impossible without the help of mt6, who made the new taper pin  It's going to replace a Craftsman exposed screw POS on the bench. Despite the obvious attempts to convert it to an anvil, it's as rock solid as can be.

And the next project, a Yost 33C, born in 1978, that looks like this right now. It's going to end up on a pedestal stand.

The pipe jaws are missing, I think I'll make my own, as opposed to laying out over $100. Anybody else have a set they'd be willing to scan next to a ruler??????????

Drivesit.---Yea I have a 206, but it would look like a flea on a dogs back compared to that 48 b100 just posted.---Can you believe the size of that thing.---It would take two men just to turn the swivel jaw.---If a man could cotton on to one of those, the rest of his vise hunting days would be so anticlimactic.---Boy that vise and stand, that's a prize.---Now you know what you're looking for Drivesit.

b100.---Now we are expecting you to produce the 408 and the 209 and the 5198.---While we are talking about big vises, what does the 109 weigh?

Yes, it is a good Wilton. It is small, however. Small can be good.

It looks like that's going to be a good auction once they get past all the furniture and household ****. I wish it was closer to me.

I paid $16 for my Wilton Cadet. My guess is that one will go for $50 - $80 at auction if there are a few bidders present.

Area and size dependent, but I bought a 5" Cadet for $50 and after restore sold it for $240 - YMMV :dunno:

That sounds about right. Sure you didn't just throw it under your arm with a jig and a whistle? ;)

Thanks guys. They were my first and second restores. I still have a lot to learn and my speed is about 1/100th of Balane's but I am having fun.

There is another 5186 local to me that is tempting me to buy and clean it up. Unfortunately if violates my rule of having a use for a tool before I buy it. I may have to break that for this one if its still there in a few days.

Here's it's use -
You need it to finish your next project - Restoring a 5186 that you just picked up.

... my rule of having a use for a tool before I buy it.

I work the other way around. After I buy a tool I find a use for it. When I use a tool that makes it my own.

For example, I have maybe 100 hammers. When I buy another I leave it out on the bench. Next time I need a hammer that's the one I use. Since I used it to do something it has value to me and has earned a place in the collection.

This works with vises too! :rocker:
